After 23 years, 4 migrations, 12,000 miles and many great hardships, this refugee fi nally has a home. Imagine the

desperation that would drive you to

risk drowning and starvation in an

open boat for 25 days at sea and,

once you had reached your

destination 1,200 miles later, there

was a good chance you would be

turned away or even imprisoned.

Those were the stakes seven years ago

when, at age 17, Hamidul decided to

join his brother in Malaysia, where he

would fi nally have a chance at a job.

Thanks to funding from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops*, Catholic Charities met Hamidul’s basic needs: they helped him learn English, source ethnically appropriate food, arrange healthcare-related appointments, and learn how to use public transportation. Like all refugees, Hamidul was eligible to work right away. So with the need to repay the US government for his fl ight and his daily living expenses, he was eager to get to work.

Catholic Charities assisted him with job training and found him employment in a factory. But because he speaks fi ve languages, the most recent of which is English, Hamidul soon landed a job as a translator for Catholic Charities. He works primarily with other Rohingya, for whom he is virtually the only translator in northern Indiana.

This past August, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

hosted their annual Refugee Congress in Washington DC. Each state is allowed one representative and Hamidul was selected to represent the state of Indiana. There he shared his remarkable experiences about his long journey to the United States.

Finally having a place to call home, Hamidul wants to pursue the American Dream by continuing his education and one day buying his own home. His next steps are growing in profi ciency with English and working toward citizenship.

Refl ecting on his trials and now living in the United States, he says, “I am the luckiest man in the world.” When asked if he wants anything else, without hesitation he adds, “I want to join the Army. I want to defend the country that has given me so much.”

Catholic Charities provided Hamidul with a start on a new life.

…continued from cover

“We had no food the last fi ve days. Seven of 116 [on the very overcrowded boat] died,” he says, refl ecting on the severe trauma of the journey. “I cried out to God every day.”

Hamidul’s appalling experience is typical for the Rohingya, an ethnic minority in western Burma. For the past 50 years, they have faced severe persecution by the ruling military junta. The regime declared that the Rohingya were not citizens, even though the group had lived in Burma for centuries and enjoyed citizenship for nearly 20 years after the British left in 1947.

With that declaration, over 800,000 Rohingya effectively became refugees in their own country. They were scapegoated as outsiders, and denied education, as well as voting

and property rights. They were also excluded from government employment and many Rohingya have been killed, solely because of their ethnicity.

Facing such bleak prospects in Burma, Hamidul’s family sent him at age three to live with a cousin in Bangladesh, a move that was the beginning of a long journey to a place he could fi nally call home.

Hamidul and his fellow refugees found life diffi cult in Bangladesh. There, they were also treated as outsiders. After he completed the equivalent of high school, Hamidul wanted to continue his studies, but was denied access for lack of citizenship. He returned to Burma briefl y before the long boat journey to Malaysia.

Once in Malaysia, he tried to pursue his education, but was again denied because he lacked citizenship. Hamidul eventually applied for refugee status, a process that took more than three years of paperwork and vetting. Then one day in 2015, he received a chance to come to the United States as a refugee. So at age 23, he fl ew from Malaysia to Fort Wayne where he would join other Rohingya. His brother followed him here a month later.

I had no home. I

had no job. I had

no future. I just

wanted a country.

Hamidul Hassan

“I had no home. I “I had no home. I

*Funding for refugee resettlement comes from federal government grants awarded to the USCCB.

Coming in January, 2017:New Videos Profile People Served by Catholic Charities

Alex came to the United States 16 years ago on a special work permit issued after a terrible earthquake devastated his native El Salvador. While just a teenager, he jumped at the opportunity because of the chaos and great danger there from gangs that were terrorizing the populace following their civil war.

Once here, Alex worked maintenance and construction jobs, always supporting himself and his family. Eventually he became a commercial carpenter, which is still his full-time job. As his skill with English grew, he applied for his green card.

Alex had greater ambitions: he wanted to become a citizen and, to

show his appreciation for his new country, join the military to defend it. So, once he received his green card, he joined the Army National Guard, where he has served for the last four years as a firefighter and medical first responder.

Eventually, with help of Catholic Charities, Alex became a US citizen. He is married, the father of two children, and a homeowner, living in Allen County. By this time next year, he hopes to be living in the house he is currently building.

At 17, Reyna found herself pregnant, frightened and overwhelmed. She first went to the Women’s Care Center for assistance. After she decided to parent her baby, they referred her to our ECHO Program, which is designed to help pregnant teens stay in school and complete their high-school diploma. ECHO teen moms have a 90+% graduation rate, compared to 40% nationally.

Reyna found a warm welcome and much-needed assistance from her ECHO case manager, Nora, who first helped Reyna with a schedule that would allow her to stay in school while looking after her son.

Reyna graduated on time, but had no plans for continuing her education beyond high school. Nora helped her investigate career possibilities and coordinated her search for scholarships and financial aid.

Eventually Reyna decided on Ivy Tech Community College.

Reyna credits Nora with helping her organize and prioritize her life so she can continue her studies and raise her son. More importantly, Reyna feels that advancing her education will help her stay out of poverty and provide the life she wants for her family.

DONATIONS IN MEMORY OF

DONATIONS IN HONOR OF

Please support the Catholic Charities Annual Coat Drive in Auburn.

For more than 10 years, the Catholic Charities RSVP office in Auburn has been offering free winter garments to those in need. Each year the organization passes out nearly 2,000 coats, hats, scarves, gloves and mittens to area residents.

Requests come from many places, including those who have been recently released from jail, or those who are living at the local homeless shelter. There is also the occasional pregnant woman who

has outgrown her coat. Whatever the circumstances, they are generally deluged with requests about the time of the first significant snowfall.

Distribution of coats will continue through January. Clothing donations are accepted at the Auburn office year round. Donated items may be dropped off at the Catholic Charities, RSVP office in Auburn, which is located at 107 West Fifth Street. Their number is 260-925-0917.
