Dear Parent,

There is definitely a chill in the air this week and I would like to take the op-portunity to reiterate that pupils must wear a coat to school and dress warm-ly for the weather. On a positive note, the colder weather is making everyone feel excited about the seasonal fare which lies ahead.

Some of the OSI5 performers at ‘Pensioners Got Talent’ on Saturday Night gave us a glimpse of a variety of skills demonstrated by our performing arts pupils. There were beautiful solos from Tabitha Lowe, Emma Curl and Chantalle Welsh, ably supported by Lizzie Simou, as well as a range of talents, from singing to dancing, displayed by Saffron Andrew, Sapphire Hennessey-Grant, Daisy Clarke and Adam Chowdhury. I was also very impressed by the poise and confidence of our articulate and energetic presenters: Igor Talbot, Georgia Tipping and Emma Curl.

The pensioners themselves were entertaining and an enormously talented group of people, who were definitely still young at heart. It was a very musi-cal experience, ranging from Eartha Kitt’s ‘Santa Baby,’ via the Scottish bag-pipes, to Saffron’s granny’s powerhouse rendition of ‘You Will Never Walk Alone’. Special guest, Mark Beaumont, revealed a surprising comedic side and Giles Perrin rounded off the evening with an a capella version of ‘She Moves Through the Fair’. Everyone had an excellent time and many thanks to Arabel-la Ansar for coming up with the concept and organising the evening.

This week, tickets go on sale for the eagerly-anticipated ’Winter Warmer’ which takes place on Tuesday 6th December. The week of December 5th will also be the week in which pupils from Years 5, 6 and 7 will experience master-class workshops taught by Claremont Senior School teachers. The concept seeks to introduce pupils to new subjects, such as Politics, Philosophy, Psy-chology, Photography and Italian, as well as new concepts, in order to stretch and challenge them. Year 3 are currently learning about keeping safe on the internet. This week they learnt about the importance of keeping personal information safe, with the help of "Kara Winston and the SMART crew". The children made "choice wheels" to help them make decisions about what to do if they are worried about anything internet-related.

Arjun, 5A, was the joint winner of the Under 11 Sussex Junior Chess Championship held at Hassocks on 20th November.

Belle (4C) and Ben (3S) received their Blue belt and Green and White Stripe belt respectively, in Karate grading recently. Well done.

An Elf Door has mysteriously appeared in Pre-Prep. Let’s hope you’re all behaving yourself. Don’t forget: Santa’s making a list, he’s checking it twice, he’s going to find out who’s naughty or nice! Ho Ho Ho.

Amarisa made some lovely, yummy, biscuits for Children in Need. Thank you to all the children who brought something in to sell in our Cake Sale. It was a great success and enjoyed by all.

Year 1 have been busy measuring all sorts of things. We took a walk around the school to identify things that are longer or shorter than a metre stick.

We also measured our teachers. We predicted that Mr Edwards would be the most cubes and Mrs Luff would be the least cubes.

The results showed that Mr Edwards was 101 cubes tall, Mr Drinkwater was 99 cubes tall, Mrs Luff 90 cubes and Miss West 88 cubes.

This was a great activity using non standard measures!

Phonics Group, enjoying

a Word Search!

Well done Josh... he earned a Headteacher’s Commendation for writing a story with a quill pen and ink.

We have been watching Le Grand Muzzy and Year 1 drew these super pictures of the characters!

In Forest School, Reception went looking for signs of elves in the woods! We were rather lucky to find their cooking pot, and even luckier still to find some tasty cakes that they’d left for us. They were yummy. Thank you, elves.

Where’s your child?

Year 2 have Christmas toys in their igloo, which the children have to look after! Here is Holly Bear with Lexy having a cup of tea!

Year 2 working on money sums.

Well done to Elsie in 2B, who is currently performing a solo in the Hastings Gang Show at the White Rock!

Thanksgiving Celebrations hit Bodiam On Thursday 24 November, the Sixth Form planned and delivered an excellent evening to celebrate the American festival of Thanksgiving. The event was well attended by 50 people, including students, staff, and parents. The main meal included a 3-bird roast, mash potatoes, a honey glazed and a toasted almond-infused green bean dish, pigs in blankets, stuffing, braised red cabbage and carrots. The feast was prepared by Mr. Eckhoff, ably assisted by a team of budding Sixth Form cooks. Karin Rigg was brought in as a pumpkin pie specialist and she did not disappoint! As the original Thanksgiving was a merging of cultures to give thanks for all that they were blessed with, it seemed wholly appropriate that the Sixth Form undertake a similar event. Our Sixth Form has students and staff from all parts of the globe and this event, albeit very American, mirrored the sentiments of the original Thanksgiving feast in the late 1400s to 1500s.

The team work involved in creating the evening is what makes events like this special. It is amazing what can be achieved when many people move in the same direction in pursuit of the same goal. It was a fantastic evening and is likely to become a yearly occurrence for future generations of sixth formers. Mr Eckhoff, Head of Sixth Form – and American

GCSE and A Level Music students experience time travel orchestral style! It was a cold and overcast November morning on Wednesday 23 November, but that could not dampen the spirits of the GCSE and A Level Musicians, as we whizzed up to London, to the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall. We were off to hear the London Philharmonic Orchestra in an excellently presented 'Bright Sparks' concert, aimed at GCSE and A Level Music students.

We heard music from as early as Baroque times (1720s), with extracts of Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no.5, which involved a small orchestra with harpsichord. We then time travelled 100 or so years forward to hear an extract of Berlioz's Harold in Italy, which involves a masterful part played by a solo viola, accompanied by a larger, Romantic-style orchestra.

We were then catapulted into the 20th Century, with a 100 plus orchestra performing a rousing rendition of Schoenberg's Peripetie and some classic film themes, including Out of Africa and 633 Squadron.

All in all it was a most enjoyable trip, even if the train was cancelled on the way home! The silver lining, it gave us more time to enjoy the sights of the Big Smoke! Mrs Amy Bartle, Head of Music

A Level Chemistry students attend Chemists’ Lecture day On 17 November the A Level Chemistry students went up to London to hear a series of lectures from leading Chemists. The talks covered the element Mercury, the use of Chemistry in the brewing industry and the science of taste. We also heard all about nano-scale materials and why they are so important in today's world as well as the atomic scale modelling now being used to design batteries to make them ever smaller and more portable (and we got to wear 3D glasses for that one!). The highlight of the day though was from Kathryn Harkup who told us all about the many compounds that we now consider to be poisons that were once found on pharmacy shelves. Our particular favourite was hearing about Arsenic which was once readily available and both a go-to poison for the Victorians as well as a cosmetic for producing a blemish free "peaches and cream" complexion. However, the speaker was careful to tell us NOT to try it at home! Mrs Claire Martin, Chemistry Teacher

Van De Graff Generator causing static electricity in a Year 10 Physics lesson.

A Level historians attend Russian Revolution Lecture Day On Tuesday, 21 November, the A2 History group went to UCL for a seminar on the Russian Revolution. We listened to five different historians speak, each about a different topic. Prof. Jan Plamper spoke about the Stalin era, Prof. Dominic Lieven spoke about the collapse of the Russian Monarchy, Dr James Ryan on the economic policy, Dr Zoe Knox on Bolshevism as a religion and, finally, Prof. Orlando Figes on mass violence. The day was extremely informative and we picked up a lot of different interpretations to use in our coursework. It was also very interesting to hear different historians' views on the same events, and allowed us to think about things in a very new way. Madeleine Stichbury, Year 13

Match Reports The Malcolm Constable Memorial Trophy Wednesday, 23 November 2016

Claremont 7 - 0 Battle Abbey

Constable 4 Sturgeon Paulker 2

The first of an annual event involving Claremont and an opponent chosen by Ollie and Matt Constable. The game began with a minute of applause to celebrate the life of Malcolm Constable. Play then quickly burst into life on the pitch when, after five minutes, Emmanuel was brought down by the impressive Battle Abbey keeper. Penalty to Claremont! Up stepped Matt Constable to smash it into the net, 1-0 Claremont. Fittingly it was Constable, captain for the day, who scored the opening goal. The game was very tight for the next few minutes with both sides keeping close until Emmanuel broke away to make it 2-0 Claremont. The Battle keeper was playing very well and shot after shot was saved by him.

Claremont began to pepper the Battle goal and it was not long before more goals were added to the tally. At 5-0 Claremont were awarded another penalty, again through Emmanuel’s hard work in the area and up stepped Matt Constable to … SAVED by the keeper!

The game was clearly Claremont’s and, following a number of substitutions, the boys made it 7-0 with Matt Constable achieving 4 goals himself.

It was a truly memorable game for Matt, and of course Louise and Ollie, and an extremely fitting tribute to Malcolm. Matt came off the pitch to a standing ovation after giving a performance of which his late father would have been very proud. Jim Colston, Academy Director, Claremont Football Academy

Olivia, Emma, Hattie, Amelia, Joe, Javier and Joseph played in a Hockey Tournament at the weekend. This was their first tournament for South Saxons and the first time they had played as a team. They played teams from Eastbourne, Lewis and East Grinstead; all of whom who had children 2 or 3 years older… you could see the difference in size!

The girls drew one game and lost two however their passion and drive did not falter and played committed to the end. Unfortunately one of the girls teams did not turn up. The boys won one, drew two and lost one.

Reported by Mr Cox, from an extremely cold but fun hockey tournament in Eastbourne!

All the boys played with passion and commitment against boys older than them. All three did not look out of place despite playing against boys who were bigger and faster. Each of the boys used their excellent stick skills to be effective in the game. All the children played well and did credit to the School’s hockey programme. Mr Patel

1st

We started the game with great desire to win and we were straight onto the ball. The girls demonstrated some great attacking play and passed the ball between them switching the play into space. We scored early in the first half by Amba giving the girls a boost of confidence. They all played extremely hard and 100% until the end of the match, our defense of Julia and Lucinda. Goal scorers: Amba 3, Amelia C 2 & Tippi W 1.

2nd

Claremont 3 - 0 Moira House POM: Marysia Dickinson The 2nd team played some excellent sweep hits up the pitch. However, they were very bunched up throughout the match. They must focus on holding their positions and play the ball wide instead of straight up the middle of the pitch. It was lovely to see the girls using the reverse stick to receive passes, which is what we have been practising in lessons this week. Well done Lucy Bate and Marysia Dickinson for scoring fantastic goals. Miss Compton.

Plaits win matches!

U11A and U11B

The U11A team were a little slow to get going in the first half and went a goal down in the first 5 minutes. Izzy W pulled them level with a great piece of 3D skill to beat the defender before her powerful run into the D was finished off with a well executed goal. Our performance improved greatly in the second half with another goal from Izzy W, two from Olivia C ( both scored from a short corner ) and one from Eve S. Final score: Claremont 5; Moira House 1. POM: Olivia C.

The U11B's put in a good performance and played some of the best hockey I've seen them play this term. Nancy McI played well in defence stopping a number of attacks from Moira House and she executed her free hits well. Evie S secured a hat trick and Hattie H topped off her solid performance in centre mid-field with a well taken goal. Final score: Claremont 4; Moira House 0. POM: Hattie H. Great results for both teams, well played girls!

The progress we are making in our hockey is really noticeable and I was so proud of the way they played on Wednesday in an incredibly strong group at the East Grinstead tournament. We started with a confidence building 2-0

win v Bedes (scorers Emma P and Hattie) As you can see from the results table we really held our own with very little between each team in every game. Sadly just a draw would have been required in our last game against LND would have taken us through to the Plate but a simple mistake in defence lead to a 1-0 defeat. Miss Holmes

A fun (if chilly) afternoon of netball. The girls have made such progress this term. POM:

Sarah B (Birthday girl!).

U9A

Claremont U9A netball team played a triangular tournament away at a cold and windy Skippers Hill this week. The results were as follows: v St Andrews B - won 3-0 v Claremont B - won 1-0 v Skippers Hill - lost 3-0 v St Andrews A - lost 4-0 POMs: Summer, Tess and Heidi U9B Claremont U9B netball team played in a triangular tournament against Skippers Hill and St Andrews. The girls played well and had a fun afternoon. The results are as follows: Claremont B 1 - 0 St. Andrews A Claremont B 0 - 1 Claremont A Claremont B 1 - 0 St Andrews B Claremont B 0 - 2 Skippers Hill

Badgers have designed onesies on a template for the character Max from the book “Where the Wild Things Are”. They have also focussed on ordering numbers using the number cones. They have begun to make cards and decorations for Christmas. Paint and glitter abound!

Foxes had an exciting Tuesday afternoon when Mrs Collins (Nancy’s Mum) brought in their two dogs (Jake and Jonah (Labrador)) to meet the class. The dogs behaved brilliantly

and so did the Foxes. Many thanks to Mrs Collins for giving up her time so generously.

We have been making tree decorations and cards too.

At Forest School we worked as a combined group, and learned about collecting tinder and kindling. We then made a campfire. We enjoyed hot chocolate and a biscuit sitting around our fire. Thank you Charlotte, in the main school kitchen, for helping us to do this.

This week the Hedgehogs have been focusing on their mathematical development

skills. We have been doing lots of construction work, making

towers, playing lots of number games and learning to count to 5. The

Hedgehogs have also been learning how to sort different coloured bears into

the right coloured bowls.

This week in Robins we have been making lots of glittery pictures ready to go on our winter wonderland display , they look really sparkly. We have also made some wintery magical mobiles hanging up on the Robin's washing line. A huge thank you to everyone who donated to Children in Need; we made a massive £113.20.

The Ducklings and Butterflies have started their theme on winter this week by using lots of paint, glue, glitter and a range of different materials to create their beautiful pictures to go up on display. Both rooms have also enjoyed ice play which was great fun, but rather chilly, and musical movement where we all pretended to be snowflakes and snowmen.

A big thank you to everyone that helped and bought cakes on our Children in Need day last Friday. It was a great success and we raised over £100.

This week we have welcomed new friends Gerard and Lana to our class who have already made friends with our fantastic Squirrels!

The children have enjoyed being creative by painting their clay pots, making their calendars and we have enjoyed using the white boards and

pens for mark making.
