The Clan’s Clown — Just a Jest

“How’s the flat you’re living in in London, Jock?” asks his mother when he calls home to Aberdeen.

“It’s okay,” he replies, “but the woman next door keeps screaming and crying all night and the guy on the other side keeps banging his head on the wall.”

“Never you mind,” says his mother, “don’t you let them get to you, just ignore them.”

“Aye, that I do,” he says, “I just keep playing my bagpipes.”

Flowers of the Forest Fortunately, there are no Flowers of the Forest (that we have been informed of) to report in this publication. Instead, here is some history on this little saying:

According to The Scots Musical Museum there is a fragment of an old ballad in the Skene Manu-script titled The flowres of the Forrest, and an air so titled appeared in Oswald's collection and several others. However, the old ballad did not survive, and later three versions were written. The earliest version was by Mrs. Cockburn. Ac-cording to the Museum, a man known to Mrs. Cockburn heard a shepherd playing a flute. Fasci-nated by the air, he learned it was The Flowers of the Forest. He committed the air to memory and communicated it to Mrs. Cockburn. She recognized the tune and knew some lines of the old ballad. He prevailed upon her to write new words. Jane (Jean) Elliot (1727-1805) also wrote the poem The Flowers of the Forest, A Lament for Flodden. She published it anonymously circa 1755. It was, at the time, thought to be an ancient surviv-ing ballad. However, Burns suspected it was an imi-tation, and Burns, Ramsay and Sir Walter Scott eventually discovered who wrote the song. Another version, beginning “Adieu ye streams that smoothly glide,” was written by Mrs. John Hunter. The Battle of Flodden Field took place in 1513. Because of the alliance between Scotland and France, James IV attacked England when Henry VIII invaded France. The Battle of Flodden was a disaster for the Scots, with estimates of Scottish losses numbering as high as ten thousand. Numer-ous nobles were killed in the battle, including King James.

The phrase Flowers of the Forest has since come to be used to commemorate lost relatives. _________________________________________ *Submit any and all eulogies of deceased Clan Donald Florida members to the Editor at [email protected] for them to be included in our next newsletter.

The Kilted Kitchen

Cullen Skink Serves Six

This Scottish smoked haddock soup has a won-derful golden chili and a marvelous smoky flavor. Skink is a Gaelic word meaning essence.

Ingredients:

1½ lb smoked haddock fillets 2 cups of milk 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped 3½ cups of water 1 cup diced potato 1 oz. butter 1 cup heavy cream ½ cup parsley Salt Pepper

Put smoked haddock in large, shallow pan with milk, onion, and water. Slowly bring to a boil and remove from heat. Lift fish out of the pan, skin & bone it, flake it into small pieces, then set aside. Place the skin and bones in a saucepan with cooking liquid and on-ion. Add potato and simmer for one hour.

Strain the stock through a sieve and return it to the saucepan. Heat thoroughly and add fish, butter, and cream. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and parsley sprinkled on top just before serving.

Heathered Isle Heritage

The Skye Boat Song

(Chorus) Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing Onward the sailors cry Carry the lad that's born to be king Over the sea to Skye

Loud the wind howls, loud the waves roar, Thunderclaps rend the air Baffled our foes, stand by the shore Follow they will not dare

Chorus

Many's the lad fought on that day Well the claymore did wield When the night came, silently lain Dead on Culloden field

Chorus

Though the waves heave, soft will ye sleep Ocean's a royal bed Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep Watch by your weary head

Chorus

Burned are our homes, exile and death Scatter the loyal men Yet e'er the sword cool in the sheath Charlie will come again.

Chorus

A Song from Skye

Have a Happy Hogmanay!

Clan Donald comes from the Gaelic “Clann Dhòmhnaill,” meaning “children

of Donald.” The surname MacDonald comes from “Mac Dhòmhnaill,” meaning “son of Donald.” This pattern is common amongst many of the Highlands’ surnames.

The battle cry of Clan Donald is the Gaelic “Fraoch Eilean,” which translates to “Heathered Isle.”

Heather is the plant badge of Clan Donald. The emblem on the pin used to attach the plant badge became increasingly ornate. Eventually the pin itself became known as the badge or crest worn pinned to the cap. It is not appropriate for anyone, other than a clan chief, to wear eagle feathers pinned to their cap so it is best you just place a sprig of heather in your cap using your appropriate clan crest.

The clan crest evolved from antlers, horns, or a carving of an animal on the top (or crest) of the chief’s hel-met. “The cross, crosslet fitchee, gules” is the Scottish Heraldry description of the unique cross that is exactly like St. Julian's Cross held by a Right Hand, usually wearing a gauntlet. The belt encircling the crest takes the place of the Gaelic phrase “an cirean ceann cinne-adh” (crest of the clan chief). The “belt” indicates the wearer is a member of the clan symbolized by the chief's crest within the “belt”. The “belted” crest emblem became the pin used to hold a sprig of the plant badge in the clansman's hat.

Armadale Castle, built on the Isle of Skye in the late 18th century, is the clan seat. In 1855, the castle was de-stroyed by fire but has since been partially restored.
