As we begin the Christian new year with

the season of Advent, we hope that you,

your families, friends, co-workers and

neighbors will join us as we celebrate

Jesus, the light and hope for the world.

Advent begins on Sunday, December 1st,

with our worship gatherings over the next

four Sundays centered around the wait

for the promised Messiah.

A calendar of worship and other

gatherings is listed on the special insert

in this newsletter, which you can pin on a

bulletin board, hang on your refrigerator,

or use to invite someone to experience

these celebrations in our faith community.

Our tree trimming and Sanctuary

decoration will take place on Saturday,

December 7 at 9:00 a.m. This is a great time

to help get our worship space ready for the

special days ahead.

Our Children’s choirs will present their

musicals on Sunday, December 8 at 3:30

p.m., followed by our annual Advent

Adventure, a time of arts and crafts for

children and families.

In this December 2018 photo, members of our Rise & Shine

Choir present their Christmas musical.

As has been our tradition for many years,

we are accepting gifts to help enhance

our Christmas Eve gatherings.

Our sanctuary will be decorated with a

verity of poinsettias and we will again

have harp music to enhance our worship.

or honor of a loved one, it will be noted in

If the caution tape and cones didn’t give it

away, the renovations of Luther Hall are in

fact well underway.

But well before the first hammer was swung

in Room 2, additional sewer cleanouts were

added in the parking lot over the summer as

a much needed step in updating plumbing

for the building. But now the project is

starting to take shape.

Just over two years ago, we launched a

new website and Social Media

presence.

We now have a fully functional website

that is updated every week, including a

calendar, sermons, and helpful

information for first time visitors.

We have also begun using Facebook a

lot more for events and sharing photos

as well as keeping the congregation

informed. We have also used Twitter

and Instagram to reach others, and have

a sizeable video archive of worship

gatherings and sermons on our

YouTube channel.

All of this is helping us to reach out to

others and share the good news of

Jesus Christ, and help increase visitors.

Now it is time for the congregation to

weigh in on our progress. Take part in

our anonymous survey at

www.clairemontlc.org/survey

The survey will only be distributed

online.

Please email Eddie McCoven with any

Stock Options and Year-end Giving

As the year comes to a close, some of us

have the opportunity to give the gift of

appreciated shares of stock to the church.

Such a gift can provide you with substantial

tax savings as well as benefit the church

(consult a tax expert for advice concerning

your situation).

Clairemont Lutheran Church / Iglesia

Luterana Clairemont has a broker account

with Chase Bank to help facilitate stock

transfers. If you would like more

information, please see Pastor Jon.

All gifts for 2019 must be postmarked or

received in the office by December 31.

Ministry Transition Transición del ministerio

The Transition Team, consisting of John

Gjerset, Pastor Jon, Giselle Mendoza,

Rodolfo Valentan and Lee Hintz has begun

the process of creating our Ministry Site

Profile for the Synod.

A part of that work includes issuing a survey

to better understand the wants and needs of

our faith community in our search for a new

Bilingual Associate Pastor. Please complete

the survey as soon as possible, as this is the

primary method the team will use to gather

feedback. Preliminary communication with

the Synod has also been established. Once

the team finishes its work, the church council

will assemble a Call Committee.

In the meantime, we have hired two new

staff members to lead our

Elena Enriquez will now serve as our

Spanish Ministry Coordinator.

Giselle Mendoza will serve as Music

Coordinator for the 11:30 a.m. worship.

Longtime member and

volunteer, Elena Enriquez, is

now our Spanish Ministry

Coordinator. Elena will provide

leadership and oversite of the

ministry and continue to assist

Pastor Jon with leading

worship and other celebrations.

Giselle Mendoza has been a

part of the music in the

Servicio en Español and will

now serve as Music

Coordinator for this minsitry.

She will work with Elena to pick

songs as well as sing, play

guitar and lead a group of

volunteer musicians as a part

of the praise group.

We give thanks to God for

Elena and Giselle’s willingness

to serve our faith community.

Miembro de mucho tiempo y

voluntaria, Elena Enríquez, ahora

es nuestra Coordinadora del

Ministerio de España. Elena

proporcionará el liderazgo y el

lugar del ministerio y continuará

ayudando al Pastor Jon con la

adoración principal y otras

celebraciones.

Giselle Mendoza ha sido parte de

la música en el Servicio en

Español y ahora se desempeñará

como Coordinadora de Música

para este evento. Trabajará con

Elena para elegir canciones,

cantar, tocar la guitarra y dirigir un

grupo de músicos voluntarios

como parte del grupo de

alabanza.

nosotros.

Mientras esperamos, siempre surgen estas

preguntas ¿cómo vamos a celebrar la Noche

Buena y el día de Navidad? ¿con quién vamos a

disfrutar estas fiestas? ¿qué vamos a regalar?

¿qué vamos a cocinar?

¡Feliz Navidad!

Luther Hall renovations … Continued from Cover Page

Within the last two months, Room 2 has

been stripped of its old carpet, and the

toilet, sink and tile in restroom has been

removed. But during the process of

making plumbing upgrades to turn the

restroom into a laundry room, our

construction crew members found a

plumbing issue that needed attention. This

involved ripping out drywall and old pipes

which had been leaking.

Additional electrical outlets and plumbing

has been added to Room 2 to

accommodate a refrigerator, microwave,

coffee makers and two sinks. All the walls

(including the brick and paneling) as well as

the ceiling have received a fresh coat of

new paint.

In the coming weeks, a new tile floor will

also be put down in both Room 2 and the

Laundry Room, and the cabinets,

countertops along with a new window and

serving ledge will be installed in Room 2.

More updates to follow.

Workers add new plumbing in Room 2 of Luther Hall to

accommodate the sinks which will be installed soon.

The following Sunday (December 15) our

Esperanza Youth Choir and our Rise &

Shine choir will present their Christmas

concert at 3:30 p.m. with the Campanile

Ringers playing an extended prelude, and

a special guest performance group,

followed by our annual La Posada

celebration at 5:00 p.m.

The Festival of Lessons and Carols will take

place the Sunday before Christmas,

December 22 during our 8:30 and 10:00

a.m. worship gatherings. Some of this year’s

music is from “Candles and Carols” by Mark

Hays. Our Spanish language ministry will

observe a Christmas celebration on this day

during their normal worship time.

Christmas Eve worship in English will take

place Tuesday, December 24 at 4:30, 6:30

and 10:00 p.m, with communion being

observed at the latter gathering. All three will

be a candlelight worship.

We will once again have a casual Christmas

morning worship with carols, scripture

readings and a special Christmas homily.

We would greatly appreciate anyone who

can volunteer to read scripture or to greet

visitors.

On Sunday, December 29, we will have one

bilingual worship gathering at 10:00 a.m., as

we continue with our 12-day celebration of

Christmas.

We hope that you are able to make it to as

many of our special gatherings over these

next few weeks as you are able, and extend

an invitation to those around you to join with

us as we celebrate the gift of Jesus, the light

of the world.

While October attendance numbers have

dropped slightly compared to the last year couple

of years, a number of blue welcome cards were

handed in throughout the month, indicative of

new visitors to the church. We are hopeful that

the trend will continue and we will begin to see a

gain in attendance.

Despite income approximately 10% short of

budgeted, church expenses remain at or below

budgeted amounts for the month, resulting in a

budget $5,000 in the black for the month overall.

CLC’s Transition Team, working on the process

of filling our Associate Pastor position, has had

two meetings to date. The team has prepared a

survey to present to the congregation, per Synod

protocol, to allow members to voice opinions and

expectations as we seek to call a new Associate

Pastor. The survey, available in both English and

Spanish, will be presented in the upcoming

weeks.

The Room 2 conversion into a temporary break

room is progressing well with 90% of the

electrical complete, and the majority of the

plumbing installed. With flooring, cabinets and

paint to come, the conversion should be complete

within about three weeks.

Steve Geitz

Council completed a review of the church’s

Continuing Resolution edits and revisions,

completed by the Continuing Resolution

Committee, then passed a motion approving the

Continuing Resolutions as revised and edited at

their 11/12/19 meeting.

A motion of the Council was approved

establishing the ballot of Council officers and

members for 2020, which will be presented to the

congregation for vote.

A motion of the Council was approved setting the

date for the congregational meeting for Sunday,

December 1st . Voting for the ballot of Council

officers and members will occur at this meeting,

and building project updates and information will

be presented.

A motion of the Council was approved

authorizing a contract with Daly O’Connell, Inc.,

not to exceed $31,000, for completion of the

Room 2 breakroom transition project.

A motion of the Council was approved

authorizing payment of $108 to the Cub Scout

Pack 277, for assistance in paying some of their

annual re-charter fees.

The next scheduled Council meeting is Tuesday,

December 10th, at 7:15 PM.
