What is my spark? —Carlos Varon-K2LCV

It is often said that riding a motorcycle liberates a person in a way that nothing else can. ‘Zen and the Artof Motorbike Maintenance’ stated the following: “In a car you’re always in a compartment... you’re apassive observer and it isa!! moving by you boringly in aframe. On a cycle the frame is gone. You’recompletely in contact with it all. You’re in the scene, notjust watching it anymore, and the sense ofpresence is overwhelming.”

I was keen to experience this liberation. I had watched, researched, and craved a motorcycle that wouldprovide me this sensation for as long as I could remember. My pursuit of this emotion or path tosalvation started with a long line of Honda motorcycles: 250, 450, 500, V45-750, CB900C, 1100, 1200 untilthe streak was broken with a Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide, then to a Road King and finally to theUltra Classic. Procuring the Ultra Classic was an achievement in my assessment, a conquest of a sort.

Some people release their endorphins with weed, pills, alcohol, or some other drug of choice. I prefer anatural high. Someone once told me:”l don’t ride a bike to add days to my life. I ride a bike to add life tomy days”.

Why do I ride? I’ll give you the age old stock answer: “Ifyou have to ask you wouldn’t understand.” Butthe truth is we ride for lots of reasons. Yeah we make a lot of different excuses & rationalizations atdifferent stages of our riding life & some of them are true some of the time, but the truth also is we ridebecause we like it! Period. Case closed.

The motto of the 1960’s was “If itfeels good do it” & that still sounds like good advice to me, when itcomes to riding my Harley, at least. No need to confuse the issue with a lot of useless mental judo. I ridefor the same reason people jump out of planes. To feel the rush, the excitement, the freedom. Thesefeelings motivated and encouraged me to join the NYC HOG Chapter many years ago where I could sharethis love with other likeminded individuals.

Joining the New York City Harley Owners Group (HOG) chapter has afforded me the opportunity to meetmany new riders and visitors from across the world. I’ve met some great riders, from far off places likeItaly, Germany, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom to name a few. Because of that camaraderie andmutual passion for the love of riding and Harley, I always want to make sure that anyone who visited ourchapter had a memorable experience with us.

Joining the Motorcycle Amateur Radio Club has introduced me to members who enjoy the thrill of ridinga motorcycle and our passion for HAM Radios.

I have a few rockers and patches on my vest and you know which one brings a smile to my face? A nametag given to me by the members many years ago unofficially naming me the “Goodwill Ambassador” ofthe chapter. That name tag is an extension of my character and personality thru the mechanism of themotorcycle. There are things to see, smell and just take in that you will never ever do in a car.THAT’S WHYIRIDEMy motorcycles turned the most boring road into an adventure.THAT’S WHY I RIDEIt is not where you live, or where you go, its how you get there.THAT’S WHY I RIDEBe well and Ride Safe.Carlos “Sensel” Varon-K2L.CVFormer Director/Photographerf... and “Goodwill Ambassador”

History of the MRFThe first words of the street rider’ s first voice inWashington were uttered in 1985 in St. Louis,Missouri. There, the very founders of themotorcyclists’ rights movement in America gatheredfor a meeting of the minds. Leaders of StateMotorcyclists’ Rights Organizations (SMROs), theywanted to catapult to the national scenethe clout and effectiveness of SMROs — the strong, effective grassroots of state-based motorcyclists’rights. They knew it had to be done. Riders’ rights had to gonational, because the threat was national. Ourfounders at this meeting of the minds shared a keensense that danger was not just on the horizon butdead ahead, as freedom’s foes had just attackedwith a ban on motorcycles in the United StatesCongress. They knew it had to be done right. The founderswanted a staff that was alt muscle and no fat, supported not by casual members but driven by ateam of dedicated volunteers, with each volunteercommitted to shouldering his or her share of thedemands of liberty. They envisioned a teamcommitted to core values Like respect for riders’diverse lifestyles and opinions, integrity in conduct, excellence and boldness in facing challenges head-onand, above all, leadership — leadership in theunrelenting struggle for the safety and freedom ofAmerican motorcyclists. So, at a meeting of the minds ofrassroots leaders,a new leader was born: The Motorcycle RidersFoundation. The first motorcyclists’ rights advocacyorganization with a full-time legislative and politicalpresence in our nation’s capital. The onlyWashington voice devoted exclusively to you, thestreet rider. And each year, the leaders of the now-worldwide community gather for motorcycling’spremier political Leadership summit— named tocommemorate the gathering at which we werefounded: The MRF Meeting of the Minds.

-- MINNESOTA RIDING

Seasoned Greetings from the MinnesotaTundra! Today was the 28th of December and Idid see one motorcycle heading south. Abeautiful day to be out, IF there is no Ice orsnow in the alley. (can wait.(did get3 days of riding in atthefirstof thismonth. Accumulation of miles on this K bike isclose to 13,000. 1 was hoping for more but dueto an old machine and parts that needed to bereplaced.

However I still get the usual discussions fromnon riders as well as summer riders, BGot thatmotorcycle stored for the winter?” a smileappears on my face.. “No the BMW is ready togo at a moments notice!” And the sock or theshake of a head from summer riders. ‘Don’t youget cold?” some ask that don’t ride. And againthe smile and the easy answer, “Electric Heat.”

The first week of April is usually the start ofworking seasonal. I had gone to see the fulltimers last week before Christmas, “Where isthat motorcycle?” The guys laughed. “And howwas Ito bring this case of oatmeal cookies?” Icountered.“Are you coming back next Spring, Tim?” Theyasked. I nodded munching on my oatmealcookie.
