were two different countries
Union with England Act in 1707
James VI of England was the king of Scotland
Scotland constantly have fought for independence since then
Why IndependenceDifferent race and culture
-Scottish: Celts
-England: Norman
-Language: Scottish Gaelic History: Union existed for only 300
yearsIndependent sports teamEconomy
Economy: Yes and No
Economy for YES
- Oil field: 90% of entire GB’s oil production
- EU admission => can use Euro currencyEconomy for NO
- No guarantee of economic independence
- Ongoing economic crisis
- GB promised more economic benefit
Why Failed?
• Outside pressure- Opposition from
Spain, Italy, Belgium, China, and even USA
- EU admission was almost impossible
• Scottish did not feel that they were being persecuted
• Foreign policies of Great Britain
Implications?This movement for independence was
not simply about nationalism
Economic stability was more important than nationalism
But 44% is not a small number
