June 25, 2017 Unleash the Gospel On the vigil of Pentecost, Archbishop Allen Vigneron released his pastoral letter, “Unleash the Gospel”, in re- sponse to the ideas and recommenda- tions that surfaced during Synod 16. In preparation for and during the Synod, the people of the Church of Detroit from almost every parish and institution in the Archdiocese met to explore how we personally encounter Jesus, grow daily as his disciples, and give witness to the power of God’s love and mercy. These discus- sions led to developing practical steps we can take in our families, our par- ishes, and our central diocesan offices to renew our energy and commitment as Catholic Christians to the mission given to us by Christ Jesus to pro- claim the Good News of the Gospel to all. The Archbishop opens with acknowl- edgment of the One who sends us: “Jesus Christ makes all things new! He himself is at work to renew his Church in the Archdiocese of Detroit. He is pouring out his Holy Spirit anew so that every member of the Church may be formed and sent forth as a joyful missionary disciple, so that the Gospel may be unleashed in southeast Michigan.” And, in the fi- nal paragraph, he writes: “My hope is that (we) will be a community of joy- ful missionary disciples and of saints united in Jesus… and that southeast Michigan will be a place of the mani- fest presence of God. We are a local Church in movement, and I invite every member of the Church to join in as we follow where Christ leads. Not only the destination but the jour- ney itself is reason for encourage- ment and joy in the transformative power of the Gospel… We thank God ahead of time for what he is doing for us.” The emphasis throughout is on our personal and communal commit- ment to joyfully living and preach- ing the Gospel in all aspects of our lives. I encourage you to download and read the entire letter which is available at: www.unleashthegospel.org In moving forward as this dynamic parish of the Church of Detroit, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will discuss and examine how we can respond to the chal- lenges, and implement the proposed recommendations pertinent to our parish. To envision a “missionary church” ready to evangelize with renewed vigor and courage, we can look to the early church as described in the Acts of the Apostles. Despite their fear, uncertainty and total lack of experience, these earliest disciples embraced the gifts given them on that first Pentecost and began the work of the commission to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have com- manded you.” (Mt 28:19-20) Archbishop Vigneron suggests that the church today is the continua- tion of the story that began in the Acts of the Apostles. “The book of Acts ends in chapter 28 with Paul under house arrest in Rome, still boldly preaching the Gospel. Luke ends without finishing the story because the story of the Church’s mission continues in every age. We are living the 29th chapter of Acts! The ecology of the New Testament by which the Gospel was unleashed in the ancient world is the ecology of the Church today. It thus in- cludes the same elements of repen- tance and faith; signs and won- ders.” (Marker 1.1) Proclaiming the Gospel and living Christ’s teachings in our world to- day can be intimidating; can even make us fearful given the secular, polarized and, at times, violent na- ture of our society. These were cer- tainly the same conditions faced by Jesus and his disciples at they be- gan to announce God’s Kingdom of justice, love, healing and peace for all. However, in today’s passage from the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus as- sures the disciples he is about to send on mission with the words, “Fear no one!” Then, he instructs them, “What I say to you in dark- ness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid…” (Mt 10:26-27) God pro- tects even the smallest sparrow. God knows everything about us, even the number of hairs on our heads. And, Jesus acknowledges all those who acknowledge him. There- fore, as we take up the Cross of Christ, we are hopeful and joyful missionary disciples to all we en- counter confident that “the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one person Jesus Christ overflow for all.” (Rom 5:15b) Peace! The Wisdom of Pope Francis We all have something to give, and we all have to open ourselves to receive from the other, and in this way, we globalize in a human way. Every person has a mean-

ing for their life, and young people should focus on finding out what theirs is. In education, we make a wrong se-lection, an elitist one. We create closed groups led by selfishness. This elitist isolation makes the heart and the mind close in on themselves, making us incapable of thinking with the other, of feeling with the other, of working with the other. You take risks so you can think what you feel and do, feel what you think and do, and do what you think and feel. This allows us to be coherent, instead of being “cut into pieces” by the world’s throwaway culture. In many places, educational budg-ets are being cut, making education only available for those who can afford it. To educate is not to know things, but being capable of using the three languages, that of the hands, the heart and the mind. “Education is to include.”

As you put away your heavier clothing or get some new summer gear please keep the St. Vincent dePaul Clothing Bin in mind. Con- veniently located in our church parking lot, it is a great way to get rid of items you no longer wear while helping out families that are in need. Gently used clothes and shoes are much appreciated!

Please Lend a Hand! Please remember to pick up your Offertory Enve-lopes at the Burt Road En-trance and if you see a

friend’s or neighbor’s please pitch in and help us deliver them. The cost to mail one box is more than $2.00 each so every hand de-livery helps! Thank You!

It is time for our annual Peter’s Pence collection. Your donation sup-ports the work of Pope Francis throughout the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including vic-tims of war, oppression, and disas-ters. Please be generous.

Can You Help??? St. Christine Food Pantry is in need of bags to pack groceries for those in need. If you have extra bags in your closet, please

bring them to the rectory and we will be glad to make sure they get to the pantry. Thank you so much for your continued support.

Christmas in July Starts Next Sunday

This year, the recipients of our col-lection will be our neighbors. On Saturday, August 5 there will be a Resource Fair held on the campus of Christ the kind. It is an opportu-nity to learn about all the services available right here at Christ the King as well as in the Community. We would like to offer back packs with school supplies for our local young people. We will collect through the month of July. Just bring your donation to church and place it under the Christmas Tree!

Liturgy Planning Mark your calendar for JULY 8

Please plan to join us for our enjoy-able Liturgy Planning session. We meet at 10am are around the table in the rectory. We pray and get a few words of background from Fr. Clore and then break into teams of 2 or 3 and read the Scripture for ONE Sun-day. We think about drama, songs, symbols and themes. When we finish, we gather back into one group and share our thoughts with one another. Often we find a common theme or idea. After we hear the suggestions for each Sunday, we finish up with a light lunch provided by the Worship Commission. If you have never done this, please consider giving it a try. If you have planned before, please come back and join us again! Bring Your At Home With the Word!
