C.J. is very excited! She is going on a winter vacation with her parents. They are going to the mountains to go skiing, sledding, and ice skating. It has snowed a lot in the mountains,so this will be a very fun trip!

“Natalie, guess what?” C.J. asked her friend later that day.

“What?” asked Natalie.

“My parents are taking me to the mountains for a few days. We’re going to ice skate, ski, and sled in the snow!” she said.

“That sounds like fun,” said Natalie. “I wish I could go with you.”

“You can, if we can solve three puzzles!” said C.J.

“What puzzles?” asked Natalie.

C.J. told Natalie about the three puzzles her parents gave her to solve. The answer to each puzzle will be somethingthat C.J. will need to know to keep herself and her friend safeon the trip. The puzzles were written on the outside of threeenvelopes. Inside each envelope was a clue to help solve each puzzle. The friends read the first puzzle together...

Name 5 things of any size that canmake a shadow before your eyes.

Natalie thought for a moment and then said, “How about aflashlight? We made hand shadows on the wall at a slumberparty using a flashlight. Remember that?”

C.J. remembered making hand shadows, but she didn’t thinkthey would need a flashlight to go skiing. She suggested thatthey open the clue for help with this puzzle.Natalie agreed.

When they opened the envelope, ShermanShadetree jumped out!

“Another way shadows are made is by the sun!” he said.

“Shade! We need to find shade!” said C.J. “Shade will keep ussafe in the sun.”

“Why do we need to be safe in the sun?” asked Natalie.

Sherman answered, “Because too much sun can hurt yourskin and cause a sunburn.”

“Ouch!” said Natalie.

Page 10: C.J. & Natalie's Sunsational Puzzle Quest · He said that a hat with a wide brim all the way around would shade their face, ears, and neck. “Good job!” said Willie. “You’ve

“What are some things that you can use for shade in themountains?” asked Sherman.

“How about a nice big tree like you?” asked Natalie. She knew that trees can provide good shade from the sun.The leaves and pine needles on the trees can block the sun’srays so that the skin doesn’t get a sunburn.

With Sherman’s help, the friends quicklythought of other things that make shade. They thought of a picnic table umbrella, a porch roof, and a shadow cast by abuilding. That made four. They only needed one more.

“The ski lodge!” shouted C.J. “That makes five, since staying inside means you’re in the shade.”

“You got it!” said Sherman. “Good job. You’ve solved the first puzzle.”And then he disappeared.

C.J. and Natalie had solved the first sun safety puzzle. They learned that they could protect their skin from the sun’s strong rays. They could find shady places to play andnot get a sunburn.

They had two puzzles left to solve. Then Natalie could go on the mountain vacation with C.J. and her parents. Thefriends looked at the second envelope and read the puzzlewritten on it...

Choose the right clothesfor sun and snow,

To cover your skinfrom head to toe.

“Hmmm, let me think,” said C.J. “Picking the right clothes for snow should be easy.”

“Yeah,” said Natalie. “We’ll each need a coat, snow pants, and a pair of boots to stay warm and dry in the snow,”said Natalie.

“Those things will keep us warm and dry while we’re buildinga snowman, but will we be completely sun-safe?” asked C.J.“Couldn’t we still get a sunburn on our face and hands?”

“You’re right!” said Natalie. “Sunshine can be very bright and strong in the winter, especially up in the mountainswhere we’ll be closer to the sun. Too much sun can cause a sunburn. We’ll need to cover as much skin as we can toprotect it from the sun.”

Page 18: C.J. & Natalie's Sunsational Puzzle Quest · He said that a hat with a wide brim all the way around would shade their face, ears, and neck. “Good job!” said Willie. “You’ve

C.J. and Natalie realized that they would need to wear a hat to cover their head and ears. A scarf would cover their neck. And gloves would protect their hands from thecold, snow and sun. But something was still missing. The puzzle wasn’t solved yet. So they opened up the second envelope to get the clue.

Out popped Willie Widebrim. He looked like a big hat with arms and feet. He spoke the clue as a rhyme...

To think you’ve missed something is very wise.

You’ll need somethingto protect your eyes.

Page 19: C.J. & Natalie's Sunsational Puzzle Quest · He said that a hat with a wide brim all the way around would shade their face, ears, and neck. “Good job!” said Willie. “You’ve

“Sunglasses protect your eyes!” shouted Natalie. “We’ll need to take our sunglasses to protect our eyes from the sun’s rays.”

“That’s right!” said Willie. “Sunglasses are not just for thesummer. Too much sun could harm your skin and eyes atany time of the year. You should wear sunglasses in the winter and summer to protect your eyes.”

Willie told C.J. and Natalie that sunglasses would shade theireyes from the sun just like clothes would shade their bodies. He said that a hat with a wide brim all the way aroundwould shade their face, ears, and neck.

“Good job!” said Willie. “You’ve solved the second puzzle. Now you know to wear sun-safe clothes and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from too much sun –in any season of the year.” And then he disappeared.

C.J. and Natalie were very proud of themselves. They hadsolved two of the sun safety puzzles. They learned to findshady places to play. And they learned to cover their skinand eyes with sun-safe clothes and sunglasses.

But after Willie was gone, C.J. remembered that her snowhats don’t have a wide brim all the way around. They don’t have a brim at all. So her face would not be shadedfrom the sun.

“Do your snow hats have a wide brim, Natalie?” asked C.J.

“No, but they keep my ears warm,” said Natalie.

“Hmmm. Then I guess we still have a puzzle to solve,” said C.J. and she reached for the last envelope. She read the puzzle...

Your face and lips will not be dressed.

What kind of coverage for them is best?

“I have no clue,” said Natalie.

“Yes we do!” said C.J. “Let’s look in the envelope.”

When they opened the third envelope a big bottle of sunscreen lotion jumped out. It had SPF 15 written on the front.

Page 28: C.J. & Natalie's Sunsational Puzzle Quest · He said that a hat with a wide brim all the way around would shade their face, ears, and neck. “Good job!” said Willie. “You’ve

“I’m Susan Sunscreen. I’m here to help you. I’m an SPF 15.Do you know what I do?” she asked.

“Kind of,” said Natalie. “Sunscreen is a cream that you rubon your skin before you go swimming.”

“That’s right,” said Susan. “But sunscreen is for everyday, not just for swimming. It’s a special lotion or spray thatblocks the sun. Think of a window screen that keeps bugs out of your bedroom. Sunscreen is kind of like that. It keepsthe sun’s rays from getting into your skin.”

“Wow,” said C.J. “That’s cool! Do you put sunscreen all over your body?”

“You can,” said Susan, “but it’s most important to put sunscreen on the parts of your skin that aren’t covered byyour clothes.”

“Like your face and hands?” asked Natalie.

“Exactly!” said Susan. “Or your arms and legs if you’re wearing shorts and a t-shirt.”

“We’re not wearing shorts to play in the snow!” said Natalie. “That would be freezing!”

Susan explained that when they go to the mountains in the chilly winter, they would only need to put sunscreen ontheir face. The rest of their skin would be covered by theirwarm clothes.

“What about in the summer?” asked C.J. “Should we usemore sunscreen then?”

“You’ll need to use more sunscreen in the summer if you have more skin that’s not covered by your clothes,” said Susan.

Page 31: C.J. & Natalie's Sunsational Puzzle Quest · He said that a hat with a wide brim all the way around would shade their face, ears, and neck. “Good job!” said Willie. “You’ve

“What about when we’re swimming?” asked Natalie. “Doessunscreen wash off in the water?”

“Good question,” said Susan. “Some sunscreens can wash offin water. It’s a good idea to put sunscreen on again after youhave been swimming.”

C.J. reminded Natalie and Susan that the puzzle talked aboutprotecting your lips, too. She asked Susan about that. Susantold the friends that lips can get sunburned, too. To protecttheir lips from too much sun, Susan told C.J. and Natalie toput on lip balm with SPF 15. She said that lip balm with SPF15 is like sunscreen just for lips. And then she disappeared.

“Now that we have solved the three puzzles, I know thatyou’ll be going on the trip with me,” C.J. told Natalie.

“That’s great!” said Natalie. “We’ll need to bring sunscreenand lip balm with us on our trip to the mountains.”

“Yeah,” said C.J., “and we’ll have to remind my Mom andDad to be sun-safe, too.”

“Sun safety is important for everyone!” said Natalie.

“All year ‘round,” said C.J.
