In 1860, when South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union, Oliver Wendell Holmes published "Brother Jonathan's Lament for Sister Caroline" in the Atlantic magazine. "Caroline" later published another poem in response. Both poems were excerpted from "Poetry: Lyrical, Narrative, and Satirical of the Civil War," edited by Richard Grant White, published in 1866.
