Attempts at Compromise Crittendon Compromise proposed
that the Union be preserved, but the Missouri Compromise line be extended through the rest of the western territories• Kentucky Senator James Crittendon• Lincoln quickly rejected this idea because
he was against slavery
Fall of Fort Sumter Located in the port city of Charleston,
SC After the fort fell, the South was
judged to be in a state of rebellion When the first 7 states seceded, they
took with them many federal forts, mints, & arsenals within their borders
Fall of Fort Sumter The fort was still under federal
control The South needed the fort in order to
control the access to Charleston If the North lost the fort, it would be a
sign that Lincoln wouldn’t protect federal property in the seceded states
Fall of Fort Sumter The fort began to run out of supplies Lincoln notified the South that he
would send UNARMED supply ships to re-arm the fort, a strategy he used to get the South to fire first and be seen as the aggressors
The South did fire and Sumter fell in 34 hours
