Transcript of Civil War

The North and South hardly agreed on anything whether

it was states’ rights or slavery. Then they went to

war. Brother against brother.

• The Civil War lasted from 1861-1865

• North vs. South

One side against slavery the other for slavery

• A book written by a Northern named Harriet Beecher Stowe told people about the conditions the Southerns treated their slaves.

• It was called

Uncle Tom’s Cabin

• The South threatened to become its own country. But the North claimed it was against the Constitution.

• Most Northerns were abolitionists and helped slaves escape using the Underground Railroad.

• They also didn’t help the South with returning the freed slaves.

One Cause of the Civil War

“It is not humanity that influences you…it is that you may have majority

in the Congress of the United States…” -Jefferson Davis

(a senator from the South)• One problem was…The South in 1850 only

had 1/3 of the population of the U.S.

Which meant that they had less say in the passing of laws in the Senate.

Did you know…

• 3,000,000 people fought in the Civil War

• Unfortunately, 600,000 of them died

• That means 1 out of every 5 people fighting for their side died.
