I want to thank and congratulate all of the ASCE members and officers that have contributed to the success of many well prepared branch luncheons, conferences, Section newsletters, and activities. Also, thank you for your participation in the various committees that were organized this past year to provide ASCE awards, scholarships, SEAU structural licensing bill review, etc. All the work that has been accomplished comes from volunteers. When all of us put in a little bit of time, big things happen. The success in all the Branches and Section would not be possible without YOU. This month’s newsletter contains a list of ASCE members that are running for branch or section officer positions for the 2008-2009 term. I want to thank them for their desire to be part of and improve the ASCE Utah Section. Please review the candidate biographies and take the time to vote and submit the attached ballot to Dennis Pay (fax: (801) 483-6030 or e-mail: [email protected]) no later than April 30, 2008. Ballots may also be turned in to the branch secretary/treasurer at your monthly branch luncheon in April. We are planning on having the Annual ASCE Utah Section Meeting on May 23, 2008 at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Be sure to put this date on your calendars for an exciting meeting from the Section. We are planning on having Blaine Leonard, P.E., F.ASCE speak to us about “The Future of Engineering: Civil Engineering in 2025”. Blaine is a member of the Utah Section, is a past President of the Section, a past Director from District 11, a past Zone IV Vice President, and is currently a candidate for the ASCE President-Elect office at the national level. We are very fortunate to have him speak to us. We are also working on the details on seeing the construction of the Downtown Revitalization Project by the LDS church a block away from the Joseph Smith Memorial Building as part of the traditional tour following the Section meeting and lunch. We are approaching the last two months of the ASCE 2007-2008 term. I want

to thank and congratulate all of the ASCE members and officers that have contributed to the success of many well prepared branch luncheons, conferences, Section newsletters, and activities. Also, thank you for your participation in the various committees that were organized this past year to provide ASCE awards, scholarships, SEAU structural licensing bill review, etc. All the work that has been accomplished comes from volunteers. Announcements Northern Utah Branch

The Northern Utah Brach will have its April luncheon on Thursday, April 10th at the Bluebird Restaurant in Logan. The presenter will by Randy Wahlen. Clay Bodily Northern Utah Branch President

Wasatch Front Branch The Wasatch Front Branch (WFB) April guest lecturer is Jared Quilter, a senior engineer with Wasatch Wind in Heber City, Utah. He is currently working for the tower system division, designing space frame towers for wind turbines. Jared graduated from the University of Utah in civil engineering and is licensed in Utah and Washington. He will speak on “Wind Power in North America and the Need for Taller Towers.”

The seminar was well attended and I would like to thank Erin Donovan and Jim Seale for their efforts in organizing the seminar. The training was a great way to meet our licensure requirements for continuing education units and professional development hours. Central Utah Branch We would like to thank Jeff Klier for giving a presentation during our March luncheon about the Lake Side Power Plant in Lindon, Utah. He provided us with some interesting information on how the plant operates and several benefits of the combined cycle power plant. He also provided a tour of the plant after the luncheon so that we could get a hands-on feel of how the plant operates. Our April luncheon is currently scheduled for April 17th. We are planning on having a speaker discuss progress of the Mountain View Corridor in northern Utah County. Watch your e-mail for additional details. The May luncheon has also be scheduled and will be sponsored by the ASCE Utah Section on Friday, May 23rd, at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City. Blaine Leonard will be speaking on engineering progress and achievements over the past 100 years. A tour of the City Creek Center will follow the luncheon. Eric R. Dixon, P.E. Southern Utah Branch The Southern Utah Branch would like to extend a special thank you to Rod Cox, Hugo Angelas, Tracy Stout (AGEC), Chris Berry, Ryan Wright (Rosenberg Associates), Arthur LeBaron (Hurricane City) and Clay Tolbert (McNeil Engineering) for their participation this years Construction Career Days. The Construction Career Days provides local high school and intermediate school kids with the opportunity to get hands on look at the various construction and engineering fields. Younger Member Forum

The local West Point Bridge Design competition is underway with high school students participating from Dixie High, Hurricane High, Pineview and Snow Canyon. The competition will continue to the end May where prizes will be awarded to best designed bridge. If anyone is interested in participating please contact the local branch officers for more information. This year’s elections are upon us, so please take the time to vote and return the ballots to a branch officer. Brett Jensen Southern Utah Branch President

Geotechnical Group The Geotechnical Group does not have any announcements for March.

The Younger Member Forum will be holding its annual Spring BBQ on April 18, 2008 starting at 5:30 pm. The BBQ will be held at Murray City Park located at 495 East 5300 South adjacent to Park Side Elementary look for the big ASCE banner. Everyone is welcome and kids are encouraged to come. Bring your frisbee, basketball, or just come and eat and have some fun. If you have any questions please contact one of the presidency for more information. The spring session of the P.E. Exam Review was completed in time for those getting ready to take the exam on April 11th. Pass or fail, taking the exam is one step in the right direction for the continuation of a professional engineering career. We hope that all of you pass. We have had few more people pick up outreach kits to take around to elementary schools. Please give us feedback on how the presentations were done and if they were successful. Just a reminder to everyone that the kits may be taken to any location you desire: schools, parks, malls, scout meetings, etc.. Anyone looking to participate in engineering outreach now has a single point of contact to the resources already prepared to get going. The kits are probably most suitable for ages in elementary grades 4, 5, or 6. If you would like to participate and volunteer in the outreach program please let us know. The kits can be shipped to anyone and anywhere in the state that is interested in outreach. Please contact Cable Murray at [email protected] if you would like more information. Matt Sibul is a registered professional engineer with 15 years of experience in transportation engineering, working both for private consultants and public agencies. Matt currently is a Project Manager at the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) in Salt Lake City. He is leading the agency's efforts to design and build a six-mile TRAX extension to the Salt Lake City International Airport. Matt has been involved with ASCE for his entire engineering career, and has served in numerous leadership roles on the Wasatch Front Branch. Matt lives in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake City with his wife and two girls.

Secretary-Treasurer of the Utah Section

MARK BREITENBACH Mark Breitenbach is a registered professional engineer and project manager with the Central Utah Water Conservancy District. Mark attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, California and graduated with a degree in civil engineering. He has worked on developing water projects in the southwestern states for the past 30 years. His work has mainly involved planning, design, rights-of-way acquisition and construction of the distribution systems of the Central Arizona Project in Arizona, agricultural water delivery systems in the southern San Joaquin Valley in California and numerous hydrologic flood studies.

Mark moved to Woodland, Utah in 1992 and began working on water conservation projects as a consultant to the Conservancy Utah Water Conservancy District. In 1999, he took a Project Manager position at the District and is responsible for the planning of the Utah Lake Drainage Basin Water Delivery System, the final major water delivery feature of the Central Utah Project. Mark was president of the Central Utah Branch of the A.S.C.E. during the 2006-2007 term.

CHRIS SLATER Chris is a 2001 graduate of Utah State University. He is a PE and currently working for JUB Engineers in the Logan office. Chris currently has two daughters and one son. There is also another son on the way.

CORBETT HANSEN Corbett has a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University and has been practicing geotechnical engineering in Utah for more than 10 years. The last 8 years have been at his current place of employment, Kleinfelder, where he works as a senior engineer and Geotechnical Group Manager. He is a Professional Engineer in the state of Utah. Corbett has been involved with projects ranging from single-story commercial buildings to power plants and pipelines to levees in California. He has performed a majority of his work on transportation projects here in the state including the Legacy Parkway that will open this year.

Corbett has been a member of ASCE for over 14 years. He has been active in the Wasatch Front Branch since 1998 and is currently serving as the Branch’s Secretary/Treasurer. For the last several years, Corbett has helped with the PE review course by teaching the geotechnical portion.

Corbett is married with four children. When he can find spare time, he enjoys working on projects around the house.

BRIAN WARNER Brian Warner graduated with a Master of Science from the University of Utah in 2004. Prior to his graduation, Mr. Warner spent 8 years as a military professional in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He is currently a registered professional engineer in Utah and California. He has worked for McNeil Engineering, Inc. since his graduation in the structural department and has worked his way to be a project manager and associate senior engineer. Mr. Warner has been active in the ASCE since his days as the treasurer of the student section at the University of Utah. Mr. Warner has recently helped out with the Younger Member Forum with the PE review courses, which included organizing and instructing the structural sessions.

SHAWNA SMITH Shawna Smith graduated from the University of Utah in May of 2002 with her Bachelors in Civil Engineering. She began working at CLC Associates, Inc. later than year as a civil engineer and, more recently, as a project manager. She obtained her Utah PE license in August 2006 and is also licensed in Arizona and New Mexico. Shawna recently became CPESC certified this past February. She has been a member of ASCE since 2001.

CENTRAL UTAH BRANCH

Central Utah Branch members may vote in the following election: President-Elect of the Central Utah Branch

BRIAN J. ANDREW Brian J. Andrew has more than 10 years of professional experience in the water resources industry. He has helped plan, design, and complete numerous water development projects for public- and private sector clients. These many projects have assisted municipal and agricultural water users. Brian has experience in the planning and design of drinking water and irrigation water systems including pipelines, canals, pump stations, drainage systems, dams and storage reservoirs as well as writing experience in the preparation of numerous reports including master plans, feasibility studies, environmental documents, and water rights. Brian is employed by Hansen, Allen & Luce and currently works out of their Orem office. Brian

has a bachelor’s degree in Biological Engineering and a master’s degree in Irrigation Engineering from Utah State University. Brian is a registered Professional Engineer in Utah. He has been a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers Central Utah Branch since 2000. Brian and his wife reside in Pleasant Grove and find most of their spare time taken up with activities for their three sons, ages 7, 5, and 3.

MATT SMITH Matt Smith was born and mostly raised in Provo, Utah. However, he lived for 2 years in Kuwait City, Kuwait; 1 year in Szeged, Hungary; and 1 year in Copenhagen, Denmark. Matt graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from BYU. He then worked for Neil O. Anderson and associates in Lodi, California (geotechnical & structural) for a year before deciding he didn't want to have to sell his first-born to be able to buy a house. Matt took a job with RB&G Engineering in 2002, and has been here since. He is primarily involved with roadway design, and reinforced concrete structural design. Matt currently lives in Pleasant Grove, with his wife of 11 years, Patti, and their 5 children. He spends most of his free

time hiking and backpacking in the desert, and working with the local Varsity Scout team.

Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Utah Branch

ERIC DIXON Eric Dixon has been Secretary/Treasurer for the past year and has enjoyed his time getting to know the branch members and be involved with planning the branch activities. He enjoys the variety of topics that are presented at the branch activities and luncheons. Eric has been working with Franson Civil Engineers since he graduated from BYU over 10 years ago. He has worked on several interesting and challenging dam and water resources projects over the years. Eric lives in American Fork with his wife, Bonnie, and their 5 (soon to be 6) kids.

SOUTHERN UTAH BRANCH

CHRIS PETTIGREW Chris currently works for Rosenberg Associates in St. George, Utah as a Project Engineer. He grew up in Logan and graduated from Utah State University in 2002 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineer. During college Chris worked for the Division of Water Rights in Logan as an Engineering Technician. After graduating he moved to Cedar City to work for InSite Engineering until relocating to St. George in April 2005.

Chris was married in May 2006 and became licensed as a Professional Engineer in August 2006. He enjoys sharing the many outdoor activities Southern Utah has to offer such as hiking, biking, climbing and camping with his wife Chrissie and their chocolate lab Luna.

Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Utah Branch

BOB LAMOREAUX Bob has worked in Salt Lake City and American Fork, Utah, and then Fresno, California before landing here in St. George with AGEC. Bob is a project engineer and oversees the work performed by AGEC in the Mesquite and Clark County, Nevada area. He grew up in Lindon, Utah and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. Bob is a licensed professional engineer in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona.

Bob was married two days after graduating from college in August of 1998. He and his wife Robyn have four children ranging in age from 8 to 18 months. He enjoys spending time with his family, coaching the boys’ basketball and baseball teams, and playing golf.

Cost: $100 per person or $300 per foursome Price includes golf, cart rental, and buffet dinner

Time/Schedule: Registration @ 1:00 pm Shotgun start @ 2:00 pm Network on the 18th hole @ 6:00 pm Buffet Dinner 7:00 pm

This year’s tournament will be a four man scramble. Individual golfers may create their own foursomes, or singles will be placed in foursomes by the tournament committee.
