Types of Map Symbols

Culture symbols represent works of people. See

Figure 4-1.

Examples of Culture symbols: Roads,

Buildings, Structures, Railroads Usually black on a colored map.

Line type, color, and weight varies depending on

the type and scale of the map.

Locate 5 different examples of Culture symbols on

your map.

Relief symbols are used to show the characteristicsof the land. See Figure 4-1.

Examples: Contour lines, shading, land forms

(mountains, depressions) pg.94 Contour lines identify elevation of topography above

sea level in feet. Usually drawn as think lines, withevery fifth line drawn thicker and broken somewhere to

insert the elevation number. Usually brown on acolored map. Patterns identify specific land features.

Water symbols are used to show water features. SeeFigure 4-1. pg.95 Usually blue on a colored map. Labeled on a map using uppercase slanted letters.

Find 2 types of water symbols on your map.

Vegetation symbols are used to show plant life. SeeFigure 4-1. Usually green on a colored map. Vegetation planted by people may be represented as culture

symbols on some maps.

Find 3 different vegetation symbols on your map.

Governmental map symbols: Federal, Provincial, Municipal Offices National, Provincial, Municipal Parks Provincial, Federal Highways Canada Post National Defense

Private Industry symbols: Hydro, Telephone, Shopping Malls etc.

CADD symbols can be created using specific

and custom line styles.

CADD symbols are added to a drawing using

application specific techniques.

Creating CADD Map Symbols

Symbols are often made into blocks or cells which canbe stored, modified, and inserted at any time, and indifferent drawings.

Symbol libraries separate files that contain CADDsymbols. Allow for effective organization and insertion of map

symbols. Can be customized. Often available from government or private organizations.
