Set Your Sights on a Rewarding Career If you have a strong inclination for math, science and technology with an interest in building and maintaining transportation infrastructure and utilities, becoming a Civil Engineering Technician may be the perfect career choice for you. The Civil Engineering Technology program at South Central College prepares students for entry-level employment as civil engineering technicians, engineering designers, construction inspectors, construction managers and CAD operators. These specialized engineering technicians work under the supervision of licensed civil engineers in architectural and engineering firms and in city, county and state government agencies. While most of their work assisting on civic and urban development projects is done in an office setting, civil engineering technicians also have the opportunity to work outside occasionally doing project inspections and site visits. At SCC, students benefit from smaller class sizes and personalized attention from instructors with industry experience. Utilizing hands-on learning methods, students are introduced to the latest technology tools in the industry, master surveying techniques, become familiar with design and construction practices, materials testing and computer aided drafting. Students are also trained to work independently, to make informed decisions and to interact effectively with professionals as well as the general public. Working within the framework of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities’ transfer curriculum, many of the credits earned at South Central College can be easily transferred to a four-year university if you decide to continue your education and pursue a Bachelor’s degree.
