Restore the faith in yesteryear traditions
What went wrong to our way of passageto manhood for our young men?Continuing from where we left of last
week, I want to wrap up on this perti-nent issue this week.As promised, I will not decide for you
but will try and add to what I haveconcluded to be some of the problemsfacing this age-old tradition. As we grow old and are exposed to
changing world order and a changinglifestyle, we find ourselves caught up inkeep up with the changing times. We tend to want to be socially cur-
rent.By this, I mean we tend not to want
to be seen as old fashioned, thus losingand not taking care of some of ourcultural norms.
It has become so easy for us to turn ablind eye or question traditions prac-tised by our forefathers. We have created many doubts as to
the credibility of our old way of life.No one wants to be seen as being
backward or unbecoming. But at whator whose expense? These days, the value, respect and
dignity of ulwaluko has diminished tothe extent that we see people question-ing it.First there is the carnage that has
characterised the tradition so thatpeople have found alternate ways tocurb it.The traditions are practised in places
which never practised it before.Infants are lured to their deaths by
undergoing this ritual, even though theyare not ready. We see ingcibi ezingekho semgangath-
weni doing this practise without exper-tise.
Some of these ngcibis have the nerveto come back from the bush to discusswhat transpired there with others orwomen.Lack of secrecy has led to many
people knowing more about the ritualthan they were supposed to.At times, you find women telling and
advising men about it.Eish, it is a shame. Television footage
and pictures have been captured ofinitiates. It defeats the purpose of them being
away from ordinary people. I have seencellphones making their way there. This is just talk. The real problem is the way some
young men come back from the processand return to their old foolish ways. What is it that we are doing wrong in
there? You now find what I normally term as
boetie-nkwenkwe or boetie-tsotsi.The other habit is the mixing of this
process with tsotsi tendency, as if whenyou have undergone the process you arenow intsizwa of some sort.I once tried to allude that we need to
introduce some educational elements inthe form of life skills on how to developour young men. When our boys come back, they have
acquired no new skills. There is nothing life inspiring that we
teach our kids.I want to urge the older generation or
people involved to make sure our boyscome back equipped with a life skill. This tradition can regain its dignity if
we honour like it was in the past.We need to respect it, because it is
the backbone of our culture. It is up to us to rekindle the value
and importance of this tradition.Makungawawushwa madoda.Let us restore dignity, so that anyone
watching from a distance can have faithin this traditional way of life.

Celebrating a decade ofhelping former inmates“No one is perfect” is the motto of the Re-building and Life Skills Training Centre inGugulethu.
It supports the idea that everyone makesmistakes and those who have done wrongor were convicted of crime can pick up thepieces and move on with life. The community organisation helps ex-
convicts stay on track.Last week the organisation celebrated its
10th anniversary. While it hasn’t always been easy, they are
glad they are helping ex-cons re-integrate incommunities. The organisation has helped over 6000
people. Many of them have enrolled in ex-panded public works programmes.
Every weekday there are activities in-volving arts and crafts, sport and substanceabuse campaigns.Founder Solomon Madikane is happy
they have come this far to help convicts, thehomeless, drug addicts and youths at risk.“We are celebrating not only our exist-
ence, but that we have managed to help ex-inmates back into their families and socie-ty,” Madikane said.“All the people we have helped are work-
ing. They have changed their lives becausethey allowed us to support them. Most of all, they were open and realistic about their sit-uation, so that social workers could helpthem.”Olwethu Sotoshi (18) from New Cross-
roads is a recovering drugs addict andformer member of the AmaVura gang. Hesaid the organisation has given him achance to get his life straight.“My friends died in gangs andmy life was
just a disaster. I wanted to get out of thatlife, but I didn’t know how. My uncle toldme about Realistic and I was keen to join.I have stopped smoking and I’m not a gang-ster any more,” he said.“I’m happy to be here because when the
day is overwegobackhome to face our chal-lenges.Weknowhow to dealwith it throughwhat we learn at Realistic.“After this programme I want to go back
to school because I have learnt that crimedoesn’t pay.”Provincial social development minister
Albert Fritz said his department will con-tinue to strengthen their relationship withRealistic. He said the province needs organisations
like Realistic to turn the tide and makethings happen for youth.

Business mentors
– source of
experience and
inspiration for SMEs
Being an entrepreneur can be lonely, especially when you don’t
have an associate with whom you can discuss various aspects of
your business and its challenges.
Enter the business mentor – someone who can provide an
independent view and valuable advice when you really need it.
Mentors come in many forms, says Ravi Govender, Head of Small
Enterprises at Standard Bank. As recently seen on the ‘Think Big –
Building Business Champions’ TV series, they can be people close
to you – such as entrepreneurial parents who have helped nurture
your ambitions. This support can also be provided by respected friends who understand business, or this role can be
played by professional mentors, who specialise in assisting business owners in specific business sectors.
“Mentorship can make all the difference between being a businessperson with promise or a successful one. Whoever
your mentor is, their strengths should lie in their ability to provide considered views and opinions that can help you solve
business dilemmas as they occur.”
“Most of the finalists who competed for the ‘Think Big’ grand prize of a R1 million cash injection into their businesses
will acknowledge that it has been people outside their immediate businesses who inspired and advised them as they
journeyed along the road to success.”
A true mentor should have several important personal attributes and an open approach. Mr Govender advises that a
mentor should be prepared to:
• Share insights based on personal experience, and speak honestly about business mistakes they have made so that
you can avoid similar pitfalls.
• Allow you to benefit from their wide-ranging business knowledge.
• Provide you with a summary of the upside and downside of tough choices or deals you face.
• Invite you into business networks they belong to so you can benefit by associating with people who could help build
your business.
• Review with you what is happening within the business and how these events can help you focus on priorities.
• Not only advise you, but also motivate you to achieve your goals.
• Question you and test your ideas, so that you see your business differently and open your mind to new concepts.
• Give you constructive feedback where it is required.
• Assist you with strengthening your relationships with employees and introducing tools and techniques to ensure that
key staff is retained by the business.
• Help you identify people with skills that can be developed for the benefit of the business.
“Important to note, is that finding a mentor isn’t as easy as picking up the phone. But there are several ways of finding
someone suitable,” says Mr Govender.
Some things to consider are:
• Finding someone who has been successful in a similar field, but may no longer be actively involved in business.
Retired entrepreneurs will often take on a mentorship role simply to keep themselves occupied.
• Joining local business organisations. By attending functions, you could locate someone suitable.
• Ask people in your network to suggest someone suitable for the role.
• Target a businessperson whom you respect and admire, and simply ask them if they would be prepared to mentor you.
• Use the Internet to locate organisations that specialise in providing mentors for small businesses. This will ensure that
the mentor you eventually select will be experienced in a particular sector.
“There is no doubt that a mentor can provide valuable insights and support for businesspeople needing a sounding
board to help them maximise available opportunities and realise the full potential of their businesses.”
“Regardless of where or how you find a mentor, the key thing to remember is that he or she should be a friend who will
provide independent, unbiased support and guidance. Find a mentor who becomes a friend, and you and your business
will reap massive rewards,” says Mr Govender.

Thobeka Qushekapossesses qualitiesof a true nurseKTC Clinic, situated at thecorner of NY 78 and NY 3, isan old clinic that services thesurrounding communities. It has since changed from
what it was prior to the dawnof our democracy. The building has been
extended, walls are paintedand clean toilets – and toiletpaper – is readily available forthe patients’ use.Certain things have, howev-
er, remained the same.Overcrowding, slow service,
shortage of personnel anddoctors, management of thehuman capital and – last butnot least – those woodenchairs are still a pain.I watched people complain-
ing about how long they hadbeen there and how hungrythey were.Previously, people were
offered something to eat, butnothing came when I wasthere.
My frustrations werereaching boiling point, but Iwas kept motivated by nurseThobeka Qusheka. This woman was attending
to us in the hall area non-stop. She was apparently thefirst point of contact – oncepatients had received theirfolders. She would takepatients’ blood pressures andsugar levels. And once was done, she
would accompany patients to
the toilets to test their urine. These roles she interchange-
ably performed so well andwith a smile. One of the patients had an
epileptic attack and shequickly attended to thepatient. As she was attending to the
patient, one of the patientsstarted hurling abusive andinsulting words to her.But she did not lose her
cool and calmly reassured theabuser of what needs to bedone and that he shouldobserve, not insult, her.The abuser carried on and
the entire hall of patients andthose accompanying themcame to her defence. They even wanted to attack
this abusive man.Even then, she came to his
defence and appealed to all tolet him be.When it was this patient’s
turn to be attended to, shediligently and caringlyexamined him.She is the type of person we
should be proud of; she wasstanding the entire time anddid not even have a tea break. While other nurses were
idyll, walking up and down, she was glued to her workstation. She is a marvel towatch. Well done to MissQusheka!

Family life is vitalGood families are the build-ing blocks of society. As a concerned patriot, I
can’t remain silent about themoral decay in our society.I think something needs to
be done urgently, before wehead for a catastrophe.Crimes such as rape,
murder, child abuse, corrup-tion and fraud are the orderof the day in our society. It’s my belief that it all
starts in the family. If families have stable and
functional systems in place –where moral values aretaught – we wouldn’t experi-ence so many problems in ourcommunities as we do today. If kids are taught respect,
the future will be bright.Kids also need to be taught
about relationships, sexeducation and life skills.Teenage pregnancy and the
high divorce rate is alarming.Alcoholism has taken its
toll, just like HIV/Aids.Some homes are headed by
single parents.Others are child-headed,
where kids have to fend forthemselves. This type of upbringing
resurfaces years later, as kidsbecome vulnerable and causeproblems in the community. This eventually manifestsitself into anti-social behav-iour.I urge parents and guardi-
ans to inculcate a culture ofmoral values in their homes.Better families make bettercommunities.Better communities make
better countries and bettercountries make a betterworld.

In the ring: Support from provincial government
Boxing receives a boostCLIFFY MAGO
Boxing in the province has been on thedecline as a result of a number factors. This has led to DA member of the Pro-
vincial Legislature Masizole Mnqaselato “adopt the game” as his own.Late last year Mnqasela was ap-
proached by City Vision editor Voox So-nandzi, who doubles up as a boxingmatchmaker during his spare time, tohelp fund portions of the “Tribute ToMadiba 1” tournament held at the ORTambo Sports Complex in August.“Initially, we had hoped to stage the
fight on 18 July to coincide withMadiba’s birthday, but we could not asa result of logistics,” Sonandzi said. The tournamentwas largely funded by
Bato Star Holdings, under the chairman-ship of Mr Patrick Mngxunyeni, butthere were shortfalls.Other donors who contributed include
Boss Jobela of Jobela Star Services, MrHyder of Spine Road Caltex Fresh Stop,Eyodidi Funeral Services’ Chris Stali,Councillor Vuyokazi Matanzima andBonginkosi Madikizela (both in theirpersonal capacities).“My promoter Duma Nogaga paid
about R20 000 more, but we were stilllacking. Then I approached Mr Mnqase-la, who willingly sought sponsorshipthrough the Provincial Legislature,” So-nandzi explained. The bill was exciting and ringsiders
still rate the tournament as one of thebest in the recent past.Mnqasela said it was not the first So-
nandzi had persistently asked him to dosomething for the game.“He has been in my case for years, but
since I believe that sport must be usedas a catalyst to effect change in societyand influence development, I relented,”he said.“Boxing has proven that it is possible
to affect behavioural change throughsport and create a sustainable liveli-hood, but it requires systematic supportby government and the communities.“Provincial government recognises
that education, coupled with sport, is agame changer in the developing econo-my.”Mnqasela aims to lobby for provincial
government to place emphasis in grow-ing mass participation in sport atschools and clubs, and support boxingwhich is currently struggling.“Wemust continue to foster participa-
tion by all in sport,” he said.“Growing community partnerships
and private sector participation in theholistic approach in sport development,to achieve universal access by all com-munities – especially thepoorandhistor-ically disadvantaged communities.”Boxing South Africa Western Cape
chairperson Mickey Klaas welcomedMnqasela’s support and further urgedother politicians to follow suit.“We have many MPs and councillors
in our areas. I hope they are taking noteof kind actions like these,” said Klaas.Meanwhile, Sonandzi has announced
that Duma Boxing Promotions is plan-ning to stage a tournament dubbed“Fight Against Crime” at Thusong Cen-tre on a date to be announced.“Talks with sponsors are at an ad-
vanced stage. As soon as we get greenlight, we will make the necessary an-nouncement,” said Sonandzi.

Luvuyo Rani chuckles as Yoto Tech founder, Sigqibo Pangantu, challenges him to the ring. It took nqasela’s negotiating skills to avert the war. PHOTOS: CM

A new sport is trending in the bustlingtownship of Khayelitsha
Thanks to the efforts of the Youth Empow-erment Project (YEP) Clan, duathlon is fastbecoming popular in the kasi.
YEP Clan founder Bongani Ngqobanesaid since they started duathlon sessions atthe Mandela Park Stadium, interest haspeaked in the sporting code.
“Last week we had our third inter-schools duathlon series, which featured pupilsfrom Masiyile, Bulumnko, Matthew Goni-we and Sizimisele high schools.
“There was a great buzz about,”Ngqobane said.
Boys of different ages ran and cycledagainst each other, completing lap after lap
around the soccer field. The participants started with the running
component and finished with 15 laps of cy-cling. Afterwards there was a winner’s cele-bration where the best three athletes werehonoured.
“It was exciting; every participant was awinner as far as we are concerned,”saidNgqobane.
Among the participants was a veteran cy-clist Mandela Park resident Alfred Molet-sane.
The all-rounder has participated in manyraces and boasts with two Cape Town CycleTours under his belt. “Cycling has been re-vived. I am cyclist at heart but it’ difficultto do it alone,” he said.
Moletsane hopes more people will joinhim in his quest.
