education in Europe. Later, the St. Gallen embroideries attracted international recognition and

brought prosperity to the town.

St. Gallen is a university town with a focus on the economic sciences. The home town of the

renowned «Mummenschanz» theatre group offers a varied cultural offering with theatres and

museums. In summer, the romantic art-nouveau Dreilinden-Weiher open-air pool with its splendid

views over the town attracts visitors to swim.

The excellent location in the four-country corner Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Principality of

Liechtenstein make St. Gallen the best starting point for excursions into the Appenzellerland with the

Säntis, and to Lake Constance. Whether by rail or bicycle, the cycling and inline paradise of Lake

Constance can be reached quickly along the Lake Constance Cycle Path. The combination of rail ‘n’

bike allows captivating tours to be undertaken which cross national borders. For walkers, the ‘Bridge

Trail’ which passes over 18 brides in the Sittertobel near St. Gallen is an experience: much about the

design and construction of bridges is learnt en route. A six-hour section of the ‘Route of St. James’

leads from Rorschach to Herisau via St. Gallen.

The Voralpen-Express connects Lake Constance with Lucerne via St. Gallen in 2:45 hours. This

149-km-long transversal travelling across the foothills of the Alps is interesting from a technical rail

viewpoint, but also impresses with stunning landscapes such as the Toggenburg, Lake Zurich, and

hill moor of Rothenturm.

A perfect day in St.Gallen.Located between Lake Constance and Appenzell, St.Gallen grew into a European centre of learning and culture in the Middle Ages; the embroidery trade then brought wealth and prestige. Today, its charming, traffic-free Old Town delights guests with brightly painted oriel windows, pretty boutiques and cosy cafés – as well as the abbey district with its famous library, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

09:00St.Gallen’s favourite swim

In 1610, three ponds were created high above the city at

Dreilinden. They mainly supplied the bleaching works, the mills in

the Steinach gorge, and served for firefighting. Today the ponds

with their Art Nouveau bathing house make up one of the most

beautiful natural lidos in Switzerland – easily reached by the

Mühleggbahn funicular. But don’t leave St.Gallen without tasting

one of its celebrated grilled sausages. Try one of the best: from the street stall of Gemperli, a

butcher’s on Webergasse – with a Bürli (crispy bread roll) but no mustard.

11:00Local vibe at the loco shed

The name says it all: Lokal serves local, honest cuisine, from

simple to sophisticated. But Lokal is also good for a morning

aperitif – this is one of the city’s most exciting venues: a former

locomotive shed. Recently the circular structure, erected around

a railway turntable, has been converted into a multidisciplinary

cultural centre. Concerts, drama by the St.Gallen Theatre,

exhibitions by the St.Gallen Art Museum, the Kinok repertory cinema and the Lokal restaurant come

together here to offer an inspiring blend of culture and gastronomy.

11:30Strolling through the Old Town

The Old Town’s 111 beautifully preserved oriel windows are not

only impressively ornate, but also have imaginative names, such

as the Camel, Pelican or Swan. They also provide a pretty

backdrop to the chic shops and boutiques. Call in at fashionable

Weber, for example, to see exciting designs by the St.Gallen label

Akris; visit Martel for a little bottle of Champagne de St.Gall;

admire the embroidery for which St.Gallen is world-famous at the textile shop Rocco; and at the

confectioner’s Roggwiller, stock up on sweet souvenirs such as “St.Galler Spitzen” (literally

“St.Gallen embroidery”).

13:00Feasting on the first floor

St.Gallen is known for its charming Old Town restaurants, which

locals call Erststock-Beizli (“first-floor taverns”) – they are often

located on the upper level of historic buildings, and bear names in

local dialect such as Schäfli, Neubädli and Pöschtli. The last of

these refers to the Wirtschaft zur alten Post (“The Old Post

House Inn”), one of the city’s oldest restaurants, where local

dishes and exotic cuisine alike are prepared to the highest standard. For a quick lunch, however, a

good option is the Focacceria, which offers “a delicious answer to fast food”: Italian-style focaccia

sandwiches, sure to make your mouth water.

14:00Walking through history

How did it come about that St.Gallen was founded in 612 by an

Irish monk? Why is the world-famous abbey library also known as

the "Pharmacy of the Soul"? And what is meant by “white gold”?

The best way of really getting to know St.Gallen is to join one of

the guided city tours. These focus not just on history, but on

stories – of the people who lived (and live) here and, of course, on

the interests of those on the tour.

16:00Heavenly delights You can’t miss it, and you shouldn’t: at the Chocolaterie facing the

cathedral, give in to temptations ranging from a “priest’s tipple” to

a simple hot chocolate with whipped cream. Let yourself be

seduced, too, by the Minörli and Munzli (chocolate specialities

from St.Gallen) – and other treats made from local produce

carrying the Culinarium quality seal. These include a wide range

of products from Alpine cheese to Ziger soft cheese, available at specialist shops.

17:30A taste of the blues

Culinarium products feature among the ingredients of the

exquisitely prepared dishes served in the historic rooms of the

Schlössli. Awarded 14 GaultMillau points, this restaurant

concentrates on choice market-fresh produce from the region.

You can even try “blue potatoes” – and if the colour appeals,

there’s “blue soup”, too.

19:30What a performance!

The St.Gallen Theatre enjoys an outstanding reputation on

Switzerland’s cultural scene, especially for its productions of

opera and musicals. It fares well on the international front, too: the

first German version of the Broadway musical “Avenue Q” was

staged in St.Gallen. Great acclaim has also welcomed opera

productions, such as Handel’s “Alcina” and Rossini’s “Barber of

Seville”.

22:30Faites vos jeux! Might this be your lucky night? Who knows, you could pull off a

spectacular win at blackjack or roulette at the Grand Casino in

St.Gallen. Or perhaps you just prefer to enjoy the sparkling

atmosphere, seated at the bar or in the stylish lounge.

24:00Hotel Einstein/City Weissenstein

The Einstein St.Gallen is much more than a hotel: closely linked

to the textile industry, the five-storey classical building was built in

1830 and converted into a four-star hotel in 1978. Likewise

anything other than ordinary is the City Weissenstein, a hotel run

with great attention to detail, boasting stylish designer rooms and

a central but tranquil location.

Architecture

St. Gallen Abbey District

Even today, the spirit of the once active Benedictine monks is

palpable when you enter the world famous Abbey Library, which

also is called the Seelenapotheke (healing place of the soul).

The abbey precinct with its magnificent Baroque cathedral forms

a unique historical ensemble. The Abbey Library - with

Switzerland's most beautiful non-ecclesiastical Baroque hall - now contains 160,000 books. 50,000

of these are housed in the Baroque hall, where the 2,700 year old Egyptian mummy Shepenese is

also to be found. The heart of the Abbey Library collection consists of 2,100 manuscripts of which

some are on display at each of the current exhibitions. The entire abbey was declared a Unesco

World Heritage site in 1983.

One striking feature of the old city is its many 16th to 18th century burgher houses with their splendid

and often brightly painted bay windows. The city boasts a varied gastronomy with venues ranging

from the traditional first-floor restaurants to the welcoming street cafes. Here you'll be tempted to

linger and enjoy local and international specialities. The town is also an ideal starting point for hikes

within the Appenzell and St. Gallen region.

Besides the Cathedral, this is the city's most important church.

The present building dates back to the 15th century, but it was

entirely reconstructed from 1850 to 1854 and now is a basilica in

neo-Gothic style. After climbing the tower, you will have a

Collegiate Library St.Gallen

The Abbey Library in St.Gallen is one of the oldest and most

beautiful libraries in the world. The library as it looks today was

built between 1758 and 1767 under the guidance of Peter Thumb,

the master builder from the Bregenz Forest. The unique treasure

of medieval manuscripts is displayed in yearly changing

exhibitions. Along with the whole abbey district, the library was

Oriels in St.Gallen St.Gallen is also known as a city of oriels. A total of 111 oriels

have been preserved in this city. St.Gallen experienced an oriel

construction boom between 1650 and 1720. In those years many

of the oriels still existing today were built. Some of some have

such interesting names as Camel Oriel, Pelican Oriel, Swan

Oriel.

Lokremise St.Gallen

Built between 1903-1911, at the time of the textile heyday, this

urban building is the largest surviving locomotive ring depot in

Switzerland and thus a monument of national importance.

During the renovations in 2009/2010 care was taken to ensure

that the basic structure remained intact.

This has resulted in a building that not only retains its industrial

history but that can also be used for contemporary culture.

In this unique setting, St.Gallen concert and theatre, the St.Gallen Kunstmuseum, the Kinok repertory

City parks

Stadtpark St.Gallen

It used to be the garden for the house at 25 Rorschach street. In

1880 the park underwent a major transformation when the

museum was built. On the east side of the museum the botanical

garden was created with its austere basic forms and this was

later moved to the east of the city.

The aviary association constructed an octagonal enclosure in the

middle of the park. Currently, the city park serves as an attractive green space for the adjoining

St.Gallen theatre.

Restaurants

Restaurant zum Goldenen Schäfli (Golden Lamb)

The "Goldene Schäfli" is the butchers' former guild house and a

typical St.Gallen second-floor pub. First floor and mezzanine date

back to the time after 1484. Already at that time, the butchers'

guild was accommodated here. Due to the sinking ground-water

level, the building has sunk gradually, so that ceilings and floor are

today 33 cm lower than originally.
