There is a spark of hope for a group ofunemployed women in Khayelitshawho are undergoing training as cooks

on the eve of their graduation.The 15 women showcased their work dur-

ing a mouth-watering lunch where guestsfrom different organisations were invited toget a taste of their food at ZanokhanyoTraining Centre, in Harare, on Thursday.Zanokhanyo Training Centre operates un-

der Catholic Welfare and Development(CWD).The seven week-long course was split into

two with first four weeks spent at the prem-

ises and the remainder at hotels in the city.The graduation ceremony takes place at

the end of themonth and the next intakewillstart in May.Thembisa Nontsele, programme manager

at Zanokhanyo Training Centre, said theprogramme aims to create job opportunitiesfor unemployed women, and has its originsback in 1999.“We have seen positive results from since

the inception of the programme. Most ofthem end up getting jobs at the hotels wherethey were doing in-service training. About90 percent of those who have undergonetraining here get immediate employmentand the rest are put on our database.

It helps them a lot because. There is highopportunity for employment for them,”Nontsele said.The trainees pay only R10 for the training

and they are also given R300 per person fortransport during the in-service training.Most of the guests were partners and

stakeholders like the South African Nation-al Civic Organisation (Sanco), Masiphuhlis-ane Food Garden, First National Bank(FNB) and other organisations.Zoleka Gwe, 43, one of the trainees, ap-

plauded the programme.“I have learnt a lot from the training. It

is really helping us and I am very happy. Ihave been unemployed and it has been hard

for me to provide for my four children, butnow I am standing a good chance of gettinga job after the training. Their father is theonly bread-winner and it is hard for him tooto support all of us,” Gwe said.Gwe is doing her in-service training at

Helderberg Village, home for the elderly inSomerset West.Sydney Vanlow, of Masiphuhlisane Food

Garden, praised the lunch at Zanokhanyo.“It was a great experience for me.I have always encourage people who are

unemployed to do something for themselves,to keep them occupied. This will really de-velop them. I enjoyed the interaction thatwas there,” Vanlow said.

Yougain yourself by putting others first.Can you do that? I am sure you can.But this does not mean neglectingyourself.How are you going to help if you donot help yourself? Go to school if youcan. Be a doctor if you can. And youare going to do a marvelous job ofhelping others. But right now, whatcan you do?You can start by stop littering.Respecting others. Uplifting them. Notputting them down. Fight for socialjustice. And smile. That way you aregoing to know yourself. This is I. Andthis is what I do. Stay positive.

Child rape casesparks outrageMANDLA MAHASHE

As the family of a seven-year-old rapevictim and the community of Khaye-litsha’s B Section fumes over her or-

deal, a 52-year-old neighbour has appearedin court.The man was arrested two weeks ago aft-

er a case of rape of a minor – who identifiedhim in a police ID parade – was openedagainst him.According to the mother, whose identity

can’t be revealed to protect the child, theabusewas discovered after the child’s olderfriends had tipped her.“My child had been behaving differently

but I never took that seriously until herfriends came up to us.“They said that theyhad something to tell

me, they said that my child was in troublebut said that she must tell me.“At first she refused to cooperate, but aft-

er coercion, she finally revealed what the‘Uncle’ did to her,” she said.Speaking outside the Khayelitsha Magis-

trate’s Court on Monday, the mother saidthat she was heartbroken and disappointedthat the person who harmed her child wasclose to them.“This has left my child traumatised and

she has become withdrawn. It’s a strugglejust to get her to school.The man is so well-known to the family

that he was regarded as one of them.“He is my uncle’s friend and he often

came to thehouse tovisit, no one couldhave

expected this from him. He should be theone protecting the children and not takingadvantage,” she cried.The child’s grandmother said that she

couldn’t fathom that the same men shedined and sipped tea with could be the onewho could cause he family such grief.“I am so disappointed as I treated this

man like family since he was friends withmy son. He has really caused a lot of painin our family especially for the child as shehow changed for theworse. She is no longerthe person she used to be,” said the grand-mother.Although the man was released on bail,

he was later re-arrested after communitypetitioned for him to be kept behind bars.A money-lender, the man was also de-

tained after he was found with ID docu-ments in his home.“We are happy that hewas taken into cus-

tody again. We cannot have men like thisin our community.The community was angered by his bail

release. It is very insensitive to the familyof the victim.We are really disappointed in him andwe

don’t want him back in our society,” saidcommunity member Xoliswa Tsholoba.There were also allegations that the man

is a member of the local Community Polic-ing Forum, but police could not confirmthis at the time of going to press.However, police confirmed that the man

was arrested on both charges and that thecase was at court.

‘You got the legs, come dance’South African kasis have

been breeding grounds forphenomenal talent that put

the country on the world map.From Miriam Makheba to

Brenda Fassie that is.Now an up and coming dance

group called LX6 has taken Kasiby storm with their powerfuldance moves.

Linda Njokweni, 22 and XolileGiyose,18, are jack-of- all tradesartists based in Khayelitsha.

They are hip-hop singers, danc-ers, and models. The duo has ex-celled in dancing as they havetaken a positive stance to teach-ing dance in their own communi-ties.

“We met 12 years ago when wewere all young children, as timewent by we realised that we havea lot in common; that we candance,” Njokweni said.The duo started dancing and

singing for the past few years butonly took their talent seriouslylast year and decided to form thegroup.

“We have been dancing for fun.We thought we should impact thecommunity with our artisticwork,” Giyose said.

The duo train young peoplefrom Kasi to dance.

“We have got a space at LoveLife Youth Centre in Khayelitshathat we use as a ground to trainpeople how to dance,” the duosaid.

“Anyone with legs and as longas you can walk ,you are wel-

come(to dance), age doesn’t reallymatter,” said Giyose.

“We embarked on the idea ofcreating our own family as an ef-fort to stop young people from in-dulging in drugs and other illegaland criminal activities.”

Angela Dlokweni-Lize who hasbeen managing the duo for thepast year added that LX6 has thepotential to reach the world plat-form.

“Once people see them per-form, they love them. There islight, I see the future in theirworks because the guys are reallycommitted in what they do,” saidDlokweni-Lize.

She added that, the two believein what they know and thismakes them “very positive”.

They said their name LX6 de-rives from their initials, Lindaand Xolile. The number“6”stands for the elements thatguide their dance, that is, speed,prowess, soul, agility, power andpassion.

The are usually found perform-ing in annualKasi events like Sis-ters n’ Rap hip-hop battles andKasi Experience.

“We wish to perform on thelargest dance platform in theworld and put our country on themap of dance,”.

Lize said: “I met the guys lastyear during an Ayihlome youthtalent, moving around townshipslooking for raw talent. I personal-ly spotted the guys after I saw ahuge potential in them,” he said.

APPLICATIONS FOR GRANT FUNDING2016/17: SUBCOUNCIL 14The City of Cape Town’s Subcouncil 14 invites community organisations in Ward 38 (Portionof Gugulethu and New Crossroads) and Ward 39 (KTC, Lusaka, Hlazo Village, Millers Camp,Vukuzenzele) to apply for grant funding for the financial year commencing on 1 July 2016for projects that would benefit the community and, in partnership with the City, to carry outprojects that would assist the City in realising its goals. Project proposals must be confinedto municipal responsibilities and the strategic aims of the City as set out in the IDP, EconomicGrowth Strategy and Social Development Strategy.

Applications must be made on the official application form available at Subcouncil 14 offices,and must be accompanied by the following:

A copy of the latest, audited financial statements or audit certificate if grant funding wasreceived from the City in previous financial years. The amount of grant received must beindicated. Where the amount of the grant previously received per project was R25 000 or less,only a copy of the final expenditure report relating to the previous year is required.

• A copy of the organisation’s constitution• A copy of the organisation’s latest municipal rates and services accounts (if applicable)• A valid tax clearance certificate (Applications will not be accepted without a valid tax

clearance accompanying the application.)• Details of the type of organisation (NPO, Section 21 company)• Details of previous funding by the City• Details of other funding received from the City for the current financial year

Should any of these requirements be omitted, the application will be disqualified.The minimum amount to be applied for is R15 000.

Please deliver a completed application by no later than 16:00 on Friday 29 April 2016to the Subcouncil Manager, Subcouncil 14, Fezeka Administration Offices, corner ofGovan Mbeki Road and Steve Biko Drive, Gugulethu 7750. No late applications will beaccepted or considered.

named said theywill protest till their voicesare heard.She argued “we need our own councillor

who oversees our issues not Mpucuko Ngu-zo from Makhaza”.Residents claimed that, Nguzo is commit-

ted with Makhaza not them.Again, due to new demarcations, they

will fall in ward 97 under Mthwalo “Rider”Mkutswana. Residents do notwant to be un-der any of these councillors, theywant theirown councillor who will pay specific atten-tion to their problems.Loyiso Mathe (39) a resident of Kuyasa

said: “I’m glad that we are heard. Our griev-ances will be attended to, we just need to betreated fairly that’s what our fight is for,”he said.

‘I was also bullied by the SGB’The article (“Teacher paralysed me”City Vision, March 31) refers.I have had a similar experience to

the learner referred to in the article.I feel I was treated with disdain

during a disciplinary hearing regard-ing my niece at her school.I had no problem with the disciplina-

ry hearing being instituted, but themanner in which I was treated by theSchool Governing Body is of greatconcern. They treated me as if I wasan illiterate idiot who had no ideawhat I was talking about.They were very disrespectful and I

am under the impression that half of

the members(SGB), if not all, had noidea what their function was, being apart of this board.I really hope more parents and

guardians come forward with theirexperiences dealing with the SGBs.I have written a letter to complain to

the minister(of Basic Education), theCircuit Manager and the head of thedisciplinary procedures, but still havenot receive any response.I really hope that the department of

updated their members by some form ofcommunication, e.g buy sms bundles andinform or remind them of their arrears.

Focus was on youth at campYoung congregants from the New Home

For Crying People Ministries(NHFCPM) and the Docks Mission

churches enjoyed spiritually upliftingcamps during the recent school holidays.

NHFCPM’s Pastor Sesmani said they or-ganised a week long “crime awareness” pro-gramme at Andile Msizi in Site B before tak-ing the youths on an excursion.

Speakers from the correctional services,social workers, community police forum(CPF) and councillor Luvuyo Hebe ad-dressed the children.

Zoliswa Yaphi from the CPF urged thechildren to respect their parents and thelaw.

“To stay out of trouble, you must obey thelaw and focus on your studies,” said Yaphi.

Speaking on behalf of South African Na-tional Council on Alcoholism and Drug De-pendence (Sanca), Mnoneleli ‘Tolo’ Ndlang-

alavu praised both the NHFCPM and theDocks Mission for “not forgetting theyouth”.

“Young people are very impressionableand it’s good that the pastors are always put-ting programmes that speak to the young tokeep them focussed,” he said.

Docks Mission’s Reverend Valeshiya saidthey had a similar programme last year andthe “results were amazing”.

“Parents came to us and said their chil-dren learned a lot during these camps andwe saved them from getting involved in gangfights,” he said.

Children also enjoyed the interaction withHarare SAPS’s Sergeant Koegelenberg whospoke against crime and the role young peo-ple must play in upholding the law.

Hundreds of Methodists Church of South-ern Africa members gathered at the hugeOR Tambo Sports Complex in Khayelitshasharing spiritual wisdom.

The weekend kicked off with MaundyThursday(Maundy Thursday is the namegiven to the day on which Jesus celebratedthe Passover with His disciples, known asthe Last Supper) sermon by Superintend-ent Reverend Maseti, from the book ofPsalms 55:12 – 14.

Good Friday was explained through a

spirit-filled service.The ministers and local preachers re-

minded the crowd of the Passion of theChrist who went through a difficult jour-ney in order to save humanity from sin.

The ministers and local preachers againreminded congregants that even in themidst of our challenges, God is right at thecentre of those challenges.

The Easter programme also included ac-tivities by the Children’s Ministry as wellas a music festival coordinated by the FalseBay Circuit’s Music Association.

Busy Bees RFC, the Mother City’s firstever Black rugby club is determined toassume their position among the big

boys.Established in District Six in 1923 by mi-

grant workers from the Eastern Cape, theteam moved to Langa in 1937 and has neverreally played in the big league.Generations later, young members find

themselves within an ear-shot of this acco-lade as they are now in the play-offs of theWestern Province’s Super League. They arecurrently in the second division which hasthree districts namely the City, Northernand Southern Districts. Busy Bees has wona place in the City division.The Langa based club is preparing to par-

ticipate in theWestern Province’s Club Rug-by Super League play offs.The Super League is the province’s high-

est club rugby league. Busy Bee has beenplaying in the league’s second division,which is known as the City League. Lastyear, the team won the City District trophy.They will now play with the top three

teams from the three other divisions withthe to team moving up to the Super League.Club chairman, Alfred Kewana, believes

that now is the time for the team to climbup to the Super League.

“Winning last season has given us the vig-our to fight it out in this elimination stage.We have just the right combination of expe-rience and youth to put us in a good posi-tion,” he noted.Kewana said there was an air of great an-

ticipation among the players and members.“Playing in the super League would be a

big achievement for us becausewere are oneof the oldest teams in the townships. It reallyhas been a long time coming and it is timethat we take our rightful place in provincialrugby,” said Kewana.“The first team has seen the addition of

good players from the youth team and theyare hungry to see the mission being accom-plished,” he added.Busy Bee was founded in 1923 in District

Six by black migrant labourers from theEastern Cape. Due to the then governmentApartheid laws the team was moved to Lan-ga in the 1937.They played most of the games as part of

the Sunday leagues. The list of successfulplayers to come out of the team is endless.Coach and former player Jongi Nokwe is

confident that more players will come out ofthe ranks of the team. “I have been here forjust under amonth and Iwas thoroughly im-pressed by the talent and determination ofthe players. They have already done well bywinning the league.”
