The state and the cen-tral railway have al-

ready announced the re-sumption of local trains for general public at fixed timings, but as the suburban railway cor-ridor between Be-lapur and Kharko-par and Nerul and Kharkopar is still operational with only 8 trains in a day, the residents of Ulwe are facing great deal of incon-venience.

After the an-nouncement of ‘Mission Begin Again’ and ‘Un-lockdown’, the railway authorities start-ed eight local train ser-vices between Belapur and Kharkopar and also from Nerul and Kharko-par throughout the day. The general public is

not allowed to board the trains during peak hours as the timings have been fixed by the railways and state government.

As of now, the first train on the corridor runs between Nerul at

7.45 am to Kharkopar, the last train between Kharkopar railway sta-tion and Nerul operates at 7.16pm. The first train between Belapur and Kharkopar operates at 8.15am.

Speaking with the Newsband correspon-

dent the Central Rail-way Chief Public Re-lation Officer Shivaji Sutar said, "We will be looking into the matter and will do the needful soon."

Passenger Asso-ciations have de-manded immediate resumption of all local train services between these sta-tions. “It is unfor-tunate that despite local train services resuming for the public, there is no train service

between Belapur and Kharkopar. Coronavirus cases in Navi Mumbai are less and the Central Railway should im-mediately resume local train services on this route,” said Subhash Gupta, president, Rail Yatri Parishad. By Crime Reporters

A team from the Food and Drug Adminis-

All the five stalls own-ers have been booked at the APMC police station and handed over to the police for further action. The Food and Drug Ad-ministration had cracked down on 4-paan stalls in

the APMC market last week as well.

A team from the FDA has been investigating the illegal sale of gut-kha in the APMC mar-ket since last week after the department received information. Last week, FDA cracked down on four stalls and filed a case against the owners of the stalls and sealed their stalls. The four were also booked at the APMC police station.

After that, the team also inspected the paan

stalls in the fruit, veg-etable, and masala mar-ket on Thursday and took action against 5 paan stalls for selling gutkha and banned paan masalas and sealed the stalls. All the five paan stall owners have been arrested under the Food Safety Standards Act. In this operation, the FDA has seized banned gutkha and paan masala worth thousands of ru-pees. Action will con-tinue by the FDA, said an official.

By Crime Reporter“It is observed that

some police witnesses are avoiding to answer the questions in the court”, said Special Pub-lic Prosecutor Adv. Pra-dip Gharat while speak-ing with the reporters.

Following the depo-sition of key witnesses in the Ashwini Bidre murder case, Panvel District Sessions Court

Judge, Madhuri Anand has started recording the testimony of other witnesses. It consists mainly of police person-nel. During last week's hearing, a police of-ficer did not answer two questions. Special Public Prosecutor Pra-dip Gharat expressed his displeasure over this. If government witnesses behave in such a man-

ner in court, it could ad-versely affect the case, Gharat said, adding that a complaint with the Di-rector-General of Police should be lodged against such police personnel.

The next hearing will be held on February 26. Ashwini's husband Raju Gore has alleged that the accused are trying to sabotage the proceed-ings.

Love is in the air – it’s that time of the year

when florists thrive and make their pound of flesh, when chocolates and ted-dy bears are on display, beautifully packaged in attractive boxes to lure customers, when greeting cards (for those who still prefer a physical card over a digital one) are splashed with red hearts, roses and mushy words, where in-novative and personalized gifts are sought and found, where love finds a voice in the form of a proposal or a promise.

While there are many detractors of the celebrations, strongly con-vinced that Valentines Day goes against our culture and is but a money spinning gimmick encouraging material-ism and degenerate Westernization, there are those who wait for this day in great anticipa-tion, their hearts pounding with excitement at the oppor-tunity to express their feelings.

While the festival has gained popularity as a symbol of love from the fourteenth and fifteen centuries, there are several interesting stories about how this celebration came into being. The origins of Valentines Day can be traced back to the ancient Ro-man festival of Lupercalia which celebrated the onset of spring. The festival included a process of match-making, where young men drew out the names of women from a jar, and were then paired together. The name of the festival was changed to St. Valentine’s Day at the end of the fifth century by Pope Gelasius I. The name of the festival is also said to be associated with martyrs named Val-entine. Apparently a priest sent a let-

ter to his jailer’s daughter whom he had befriended, and signed it ‘From your Valentine’. He is also sup-posed to have healed the girl from blindness, and was martyred by Emperor Claudius II Gothicus in 270 CE. Yet another expla-nation for the origin of this

festival is that of a Saint Valentine who was held responsible for chal-lenging the orders of the Emperor and secretly marrying soldiers who were not allowed to marry.

The mythology of our country is also replete with stories of love – of couples who fought against all odds

and defied social norms to be together. Whether it was caste, class, reli-

gion or family feuds that prevented their union, the stories speak of lovers overcoming all the obstacles that came

their way. Savitri, in fact, even triumphed over death

to be reunited with Satyavan. Countless such stories have been modified, modernized,

transformed, and have found their way into Hindi cinema, where they have gained immense popular-ity and appreciation.

When love is an emotion that exists across cultures, regardless of geographical boundaries and histori-cal periods, why should we object to the celebration of love in any form? It is far better to be struck by Cu-pid’s arrow and spread the fragrance of love, rather than spewing venom and spreading the bitterness of ha-tred and destruction.

By Dr. Vandana Mahajani“Only those live who live for oth-

ers, the rest are more dead than alive” said Swami Vivekananda. A peep into the Padma awards will reveal these gems in ordinary life who did extraor-dinary work for the community at large.

Acknowledging the real change makers is a way of bringing forth to public the excellent work done by our people and also those from abroad, in various fields. These people have touched the life of our nation in some very significant way and that is what makes them stand out in the crowd.

Since 2018 the process of selec-tion too has become more transparent and we see shift in the profile of the awardees too. This year119 Padma awards were given out. 7 Padma Vib-hushan, 10, Padma Bhushan and 102, Padma Shri awardees. 29 of the recip-ients were women this year. I would like to share with you a few such great lives.

Dr Dhananjay Diwakar Sagdeo is a simple unassuming medical profes-sional from Nagpur .41 years back he decided to move to Kerala on a simple suggestion from Balasaheb Deoras, the then RSS sarsanghchalak to go to ru-ral India and provide medical services to the downtrodden and marginalised communities. Lot of work has been done in Sickle cell anaemia with the help of AIIMS New Delhi. His determination has not only helped in taking care of health is-sues here, but other social initiatives, like self help groups, sanskar vargas, swavalab, sikshan and samaaj initia-tives have lead to all round growth in this region. Serving selflessly has got him national recognition by the way of Padma Shri award.

While we are facing farmers agita-tion in north, Pappammal, 105 years old agriculturist from TN goes to work early in morning on her farm. Nothing affects her devotion to work on the 2.5 acre farmland in Coimbatore. One day she heard the word Organic and also came to know how they affect crops. Since then her desire to know more grew strong. She would travel to Ag-riculture University to attend farmers meet and learn and also tell about what she knew. Her confidence grew as time passed. Soon she became a local celebrity of sorts. Her hoe to become a part of Village stay program of the university. She would travel to cities that university would recommend. In most meets she probable would be the only women. This saree clad grand ma is the proud recipient of Padma Shri.

Swami Vivekananda said “Work in-cessantly, but be not attached to it”. All these awardees did just that. They nev-er worked for awards or rewards. It just came their way. May their tribe grow.

The postal department urgently requires some drastic makeover.

While certain changes have been introduced and facilities have been upgraded, yet a lot more needs to be done. India’s postal network is one of the largest in the world. The history of modern postal system in India can be traced back to 1937, when postal services were thrown open to public with the main aim of binding the country and its people together. Since then, the nation has come a long way with new tech-nologies, infrastructures and inno-vations introduced in many sectors of the economy. But unfortunately, the postal department failed to move with the same pace as the other de-partments, like telecommunications for instance.

Government for quite some time had been acting with apathy and complacency towards this sec-tor. With private agencies making inroads and competition becoming stiff, this sector lagged even fur-ther behind. Lack of facilities, poor working conditions and inadequate staff, made matters still worse. Un-like other sectors, the postal staff till date is not only poorly equipped to meet the ever- increasing demand, but is also poorly paid. Most of the postmen, for instance, are sur-viving in poor clumsy tenements. In the absence of adequate travel

grants, which has not been revised for years, they have to trudge long distance with load- laden bags, to deliver letters.

While in every budget, the gov-ernment promptly hikes the prices of postal stationeries, very little at-tention is directed towards increas-ing either the quality of the postal services or improving the service conditions of the postal employees. Even the postal network, which needs to be widened further to cater to the ever-increasing demand, does not get adequate attention. For in-stance, especially in Navi Mumbai, there are inadequate post boxes and people have to cover a long distance to find one.

It is a general principle that whenever a system gets overloaded due to escalation in demand, it be-comes inadequate in quality as well as in quantity of service. The exist-ing system then either needs to be expanded or efficiency has to be increased by introducing new and modern technologies. This phenom-enon holds good even for the postal network of India. To be able to make this sector compete with the private agencies, which are increasingly be-coming popular due to their prompt deliveries and cordial services, it is essential to introduce new technolo-gies, innovations and modern facili-ties in this vital network.

While the commuters have been demanding to allow general pub-

lic to travel in local trains without any restrictions of timings, the state Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in a recent-ly held cabinet meeting, ruled out this possibility. This step, said the CM, has been taken in consultation with the rail-way and health authorities after seeing a surge in Covid-19 cases in MMR region.

It is observed that after the servic-es of local trains were thrown open to general public, there has been a rise in coronavirus cases. On February 12, Mumbai reported 599 fresh coronavi-rus positive cases and four deaths. This was the third consecutive day when the coronavirus cases rose above 500-mark

in Maharashtra’s capital. The city reported 503 Covid 19

cases on February 3. Soon after the lo-cal trains were started for general pub-lic from February, there was a surge in Covid-19 cases. General public are al-lowed to board trains only during three time slots: from the start of the day's services to 7 am; 12 noon to 4 pm; and 9 pm till the end of the day. The timing has been restricted to avoid crowding.

On February 10 and 11, Mumbai city reported 550 and 510 cases re-spectively. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray said that the situation will be reviewed again on 20th February, 2021 and accordingly the decision for start-ing local trains for general public with-out any time restrictions will be taken.

Valentine’s Day, with its message of ‘love’, has become a day of

celebration throughout the country. For the younger couples, there are plenty of ways to express their love for each other. However, the couples who have crossed several marriage anniversaries, `Valentine’s Day’ holds a different meaning altogether. For them, the day brings the memories of unique form of love and sacrifice which has pulled them through a bliss-ful conjugal life.

Vashi residents, Narayan Narahari Edate and his wife, Shanta Narayan Edate had celebrated their 50th mar-riage anniversary in 2016. They spend their daily life as usual like any other couples of their age, but love is the ‘in-thing’ in their 54 long marital years. Shanta Tai shared, “Getting married at the age of 18 or below was very com-mon in 60’s. After finishing my SSC, I was preparing for my Diploma Exami-nation. Narayan came to my house to see his would-be bride. As usual, we exchanged views via our elders.”

Shanta offered Narayan kande Pohe and tea and after a while he gave his consent. “I was quite nervous be-cause on 9th May I sat for my final examination and immediately on 12th May my marriage was solemnized,” recalls Shanta tai. “His affection and

courteous nature ended my nervous-ness and we began our journey,” she says with a smile.

The couple have completed fifty years of journey and have faced num-ber of ups and downs, but they always maintained their togetherness. Narayan commented, “We do not bother about any particular day. I think the bliss of the conjugal life is ‘Togetherness’.”

Koperkhairane residents, Chhanda and Shushanta Chakraborty tied their nuptial knot 45 years ago. “We got married in 1975,” shared Chhanda, “During those days we fell in love after marriage and as the days passed by, our attractions for each other aug-mented. Adjustment, compromise and understanding are the key factors for a long happy married life.”

It is rather a regular Valentine’s Day for this couple who are blessed with a son and a daughter. With ut-most care, they have reared children and made them settled in their lives. “We have been the soul mates and the partners for last 45 years. We have ex-perienced and shared many ups and downs in life, happy days as well as gloomy days. However, we are be-coming more dependent on each other as the days are passing by. Therefore, it is better to say that now every day is a Valentine’s Day in our life”, said Sri Shushanta.

As the schools and classes are likely

to resume from Febru-ary 15, 2021 the Maha-rashtra school Education Minister Varsha Gaik-wad has requested the state Chief Minister Ud-dhav Thackeray to allow students to commute by local trains.

"The railway timings for the general public do not align with the school or college hours, which is why the government said that it will approach the railways for more clarification on the mat-ter. Trains are currently

allowed for the general public prior to 6 am, and between noon to 4 pm, and after 9 pm. The tim-

ing has been restricted to avoid crowding in view of the pandemic. This means the general

public will not be per-mitted to travel between 7 am and 12 noon and between 4 pm and 9 pm, which are considered peak travel hours,” said the Minister.

Sachin Srivastava, a student from Nerul said, "If the schools are reopened, then it would be essential to start local trains for the students too and the timings should match with that of the school timing. All the parents do not have vehicles to drop their children to schools so many have to depend on trains."
