BY AIR - The Domestic and International airports at Chennai, Trichy and Bangalore are the closest ones. Both Chennai and Trichy are just a few hours by road, while Bangalore is a little longer.

BY RAIL - Daily connectivity to Villupuram, Chennai and Tirupathy are available. While tri-weekly trains connect Pondicherry to Bangalore and Mumbai; other cities like Kolkatta, Bhubaneshwar, New Delhi, Mangalore and Kanyakumari are connected by weekly train.

BY ROAD - The best connectivity is definitely by road. Multiple buses ply daily from and to Chennai and Bangalore. From hop on hop off local buses, to air-conditioned, multi-axled luxury buses. Pondy also offers overnighter luxury buses to Hyderabad. One could also book a Taxi or Coach for any of the above destinations.H

PROMENADE BEACH and the monuments along its length, speak of the rich heritage of Pondicherry. Some of the important monuments of the city are located next to its shores. The place is historically significiant, as recent excavations at some sites have unearthed Roman coins and wine jars establishing it as the earliest Indo-Roman trading centre (around 2nd century AD). A few kms further is Chunnambar, the PTDC boat house. There is a resort and restaurant to facilitate tourists. Boating here is a wonderful experience as a short cruise away is the sand bar that will make you feel as if you are on a remote island.

Our Heritage -a French Connection

In recent years, concerted eorts have been made to preserve and restore the city's archi-tectural heritage. ese have been collabora-tions between INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage), government bodies and civic organisations. As a result of the ongoing success of these endeavours, visitors today can walk or cycle through the streets of the old town and soak in its cultural riches.

INTACH oers insights into the history as well as the ner architectural points of various parts of the city, its buildings and streets: 'e French quarter developed along the beach and around the present Bharathi Park, which is surrounded by stately government buildings.

Residential villas extend on either side interspersed by institutional structures. In general, the buildings fall into two main categories: residential, which form the majority, and are simple and varied, and public, which are set amidst large plots with fenced enclosures. French building models were adapted to suit climactic conditions.

e street façades are usually characterised by continuous wall-to-wall construction with high garden walls and elaborate gateways. e façades are divided into smaller panels by the use of vertical pilas-ters and horizontal cornices, and feature at or segmental arched windows with bands and louvered wooden shutters. Wooden balconies over iron brackets and continu-ous parapets with simple ornamental features are common.

Most French houses were built on similar ground plans with few variations and full or partial street frontage. e main façades have colonnaded porticoes to provide better

protection from sun and rain, and also act as a transition space to the garden court.

A major change from the original French model is the use of at terraced roofs instead of the pitched roofs of Parisian villas.e walled gardens form private interior courts on to which the rest of the building spaces open. e interiors of the house are usually more ornate than the exterior. High ceilings, tall arched doors and windows mark the rooms, and in the case of two storied buildings, vaulted staircases wind up. Oen the inclined window shades were made of light materials like wood or metal.

Originally, the native Tamil town developed around the nucleus of a group of temples in the northern section, and the streets were laid along the east-west axis, onto which the back-to-back row houses opened.

ese streetscapes with continuous wall-to-wall construction are very dierent in character from the French streetscapes. eir exterior façades mainly feature a thalvaram (street veranda with a lean-to roof over wooden posts) – a social extension of the house providing shelter for pedestrians – and a thinnai (semi-public veranda space) with masonry benches for visitors and pilgrims.

ese “talking streets”, so called because of their intimate scale and interactive nature, are typical of vernacular Tamil architecture, and the entire street stretch is homogeneous because of connecting elements like lean-to-roofs, cornices (horizontals), pilasters and engaged columns (verticals) with ornamental parapets which dene the skyline. All houses are similar, but no two houses are exactly the same.

e thinnai marks the sensitive transition space aer which the house is entered through a nely carved wooden door. Once inside, the mutram (colonnaded courtyard) becomes the

central family space around which the various other spaces are functionally arranged. Some houses have several courtyards.Within the intimate fabric of the Tamil town an interest-ing morphology of built form is observed, ranging from the simple country tiled single storied houses of the old Hindu quarters, to the two-storied houses with considerable colonial inuence of the later Hindu and Christian quarters, to the more elaborately ornamented and colourful houses of the Muslim quarters.

On the whole, a synthesis of two varying styles is evident in many buildings. Especially in the case of some two-storied Tamil buildings, the

One of the most engaging ways to savour Pondicherry's ambience is to go on a heritage walk or cycle tour through some of the city's streets. Of course, to the traveller who delves patiently into alleys and nooks, every city oers many peeks into its individual character. In Pondicherry's case, this eect is particularly pronounced because the city's heritage is not dened by one or two iconic monuments – instead, hundreds of houses built in French, Tamil and fusion styles create the city's unique architectural milieu.

ground oor is usually Tamil type with thinnai, thalvaram, pillared courtyard and carved wooden doors, while the rst oor displays French inuence through uted pilasters, columns with capitals, arched windows, plaster decorations and end-ornament elements.'

SITA cultural centre's “Wake up Pondy” tour has several stops in common with the aforemen-tioned heritage walk – but with its own novel avour. Early in the morning, small groups and a guide set out exploring on bicycles customised in a vintage style. e bicycles are lively in their attractive designs and make for a more environmentally sound tour than a motorbike or car. At this hour, travellers see a distinct facet of life in Pondicherry. e daily bustle hasn't started in earnest yet, but Pondicherrians are stirring and preparing for the day ahead. With a good number of stops for rest and explanations, this tour promises to be a memorable experience.

INTACH and PTDC organise two guided heritage walks: through the French quarter, which includes stops at the Alliance Française, the Notre Dame de Anges church, the Cham-ber of Commerce and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram; and through the Tamil quarter, which includes stops at the Perumal temple, the Kuthba mosque, Bharathi museum and Calve College.

Vysial Street - a UNESCO Heritage Streetground oor is usually Tamil type with thinnai, thalvaram, pillared courtyard and carved wooden doors, while the rst oor displays French inuence through uted pilasters, columns with capitals, arched windows, plaster decorations and end-ornament elements.'
