In 2011-2012, CCC continued to champion prudent investments in children and family services.

When the city threatened to make devastating reductions in child care and after school services, CCC helped form the Campaign for Children. Supported by 100 organizations, and partnered with BerlinRosen, the Campaign advanced strategic advocacy and media messaging and mobilized thousands of New Yorkers in person and online. After months of tireless pressure on city officials, the Campaign successfully secured $150 million in budget restorations, ensuring that 47,000 children and youth would have access to services.

On the state level, CCC’s work with appointed officials, service providers, and online advocacy helped to establish the Close to Home Initiative. This initiative ensures that greater numbers of court-involved youth benefit from alternatives to incarceration, and youth in need of placement can be served in their communities, have increased contact with family and attorneys, improved access to services, and their school credits transfer upon release.

CCC produced infographics on new census data and the impact of the recession on children and families and released a report on concentrated poverty in New York City. We also examined children’s breakfast habits and low school breakfast participation rates in city public schools, and gathered data on WIC, FMNP, and SNAP program usage at city farmers markets. Our online advocacy and social media networks now number over 12,000 and our policy expertise informed over 150 news articles. CCC also engaged hundreds of people in policy briefings and graduated 70 young people and adults from our advocacy courses.

None of this would have been possible without the guidance, enthusiasm and support of our Board and Advocacy Council and the skill and dedication of our staff. Lastly, our Celebration Breakfast and art evening at the Museum of Modern Art proved just how generous New Yorkers can be, by raising unprecedented funds to support our independent research, community education and advocacy. Thanks to so many of you, CCC continues to be a strong, effective advocate for children.

The Campaign for Children secured $150 million in restorations in the city’s fiscal 2013 budget and saved 47,000 child care and after school seats from elimination.

Supported by 100 organizations and partnered with PR consultant BerlinRosen, the Campaign for Children advanced public relations and advocacy tactics underwritten with research, data and professional messaging that illustrated the profound negative impact that the loss of child care and after-school

services would have on children, families, communities, and the city’s economy.

CCC played a leadership role in the formation of the Campaign for Children. Our staff provided analytic support for Campaign products, acted as one of several Campaign spokespersons, and staff and volunteers provided government relations outreach to City Council members, community boards, and participated in press conferences. The Campaign achieved 175 press

hits, reaching all the major news outlets, including The New York Times editorial board. CCC’s online advocacy tools helped New Yorkers send 17,000 letters to elected officials. These letters, combined with 4,500 calls to elected officials, over 40,000 petitions, and community based rallies across the city, allowed the Campaign to powerfully and successfully leverage the voice of New Yorkers to demand that elected officials protect child care and after-school services from devastating budget cuts.

As an independent voice that does not accept government funding, CCC is able to engage and activate diverse groups, bridge differences, and find common ground to support the best and most cost-effective ways of helping children. In 2012, our city advocacy helped secure historic restorations in child care and after school programs.

CCC is a reliable resource for journalists because our media work is supported by fact-sheets, budget analysis and original reports. Our wide ranging expertise is demonstrated in press on child poverty, school meals, juvenile justice reforms, as well as efforts to target portion size for sugar sweetened beverages. CCC secured 152 media hits and 59 direct quotes reaching New Yorkers through The New York Times, the Daily News, The Wall Street Journal, WNYC, NBC News, and NY1, among other

outlets. We have over 10,000 e-advocacy members, and our social media network grew to over 700 on Facebook and 1,200 on Twitter, allowing CCC to engage an active online community in sharing our advocacy with thousands more.

CCC reached over 900 New Yorkers through policy briefings and special lectures. Our briefings brought together government officials, service providers, and advocates on timely issues including food insecurity, dental

CCC’s wide ranging community education and communication initiatives are designed to facilitate our advocacy by reaching thousands of New Yorkers to educate them about the issues and spur them to action. We nurture and develop leaders in-house, who carry our message to others and inspire greater numbers to make a difference for children. We hold briefings for hundreds of advocates and colleagues, host robust feeds on Twitter and Facebook, engage an active and growing online advocacy network, and maintain strong relationships with journalists who can reach hundreds of thousands.

coverage and treatment, family homelessness, child savings platforms, and the educational needs of over-age under-accredited youth. We convened the Justine Wise Polier Lecture featuring a keynote from the Honorable Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman on raising the age of criminal responsibility. CCC also hosted a screening and panel discussion on The Apple Pushers, a documentary film on local efforts to eradicate food

deserts and fight obesity. CCC trained 18 adult and 52 youth through the Community Leadership Course and YouthAction programs. YouthAction Members put their advocacy skills into practice though a youth led anti-hunger campaign which included a food drive, community service, and the production and distribution of a public service announcement. Youth also examined the commercial sexual exploitation

of children, advocated in Albany for victim services funding, and held the first annual NYC Youth Forum on Cyber Bullying. Youth peer trainings reached 180 students with youth led advocacy workshops across the city. EDUCA Adult graduates of the Community Leadership Course joined CCC Board, Advocacy Council members and staff in meetings at City Hall and in Albany. CCC’s policy expertise

and advocacy also helped to inform a Fiscal 2013 State Adopted Budget that included the Close to Home Initiative. This initiative ensures that juvenile delinquents are served in their home communities and benefit from alternatives to incarceration as well as placement options that increase contact with family members and attorneys, provide therapeutic services, and ensure that education credits transfer upon release.

6 2011/2012 ANNUAL REPORT

CCC mined child well-being data to produce an analysis of new census data and the status of children in New York City; an info-graphic identifying the impact of the recession on New York City’s children and families; and a concentrated poverty report examining geographic trends in poverty. The infographics and report have generated press, online discussion and citation by elected officials and have increased the

demand for CCC’s data analysis expertise.

CCC also completed two research projects to inform efforts to combat childhood hunger and obesity. We released The School Breakfast Program report, based on a street poll of parents on their children’s breakfast habits and low school breakfast participation rates in city public schools. This report lays bare the opportunity before

the city’s school system to ensure that children receive a healthy start each school day. CCC also interviewed farmers and market managers on the usage of federal feeding programs – WIC, FMNP, and SNAP – at local markets. Our forthcoming report will illustrate how these programs contribute to the economic viability of farmers markets as well as their positive impact on produce consumption among food insecure households.

CCC founders strongly believed that advocacy could only be as good as the research behind it and that citizen volunteers could augment the work of a small professional staff. Fact-based advocacy, achieved through citizen volunteer-staff partnership, remains the bedrock of CCC activities. Our research products continue to inform CCC’s advocacy priorities and activities and the advocacy of others.

Over 600 supporters joined us for our 2011 Celebration Breakfast on October 18th at the Waldorf=Astoria as we honored Michael Corriero, Executive Director and Founder of New York Center for Juvenile Justice for his lifetime contribution to child well-being, and Lisa Philp, Vice President for Strategic Philanthropy and Director of GrantCraft at the Foundation Center, for her

leadership in pro-social corporate action. Charles Blow, New York Times Op-Ed Columnist, delivered the Keynote Address.

On April 24, 2012, CCC friends and family gathered to celebrate at The Museum of Modern Art for our annual spring art benefit. Over 1,000 guests joined CCC to honor Clare & Vartan Gregorian. The event raised nearly $1 million

to support CCC’s fact-finding, community education, and advocacy. Marking the end of our program year, our Annual Meeting was an occasion to honor Elizabeth Glazer, New York State Deputy Secretary for Public Safety, in recognition of her commitment to improving the health and well-being of children and youth touched by the juvenile justice system.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Society recognizes CCC family members and friends who have included CCC in their estate planning. These individuals have combined their desire to give to CCC with their overall financial, tax, and estate planning goals. By standing with CCC and assuring our financial health well into the future, these individuals exemplify the vision and dedication of one of our most prominent founders, Eleanor Roosevelt.
