• Deep public engagement in scientific knowledge production through citizen science;

• An ‘escalator’ that allows people to enter at a level of engagement that matches their needs, interests, and abilities, while also encouraging them to move beyond;

• Strengthening of European cooperation through capacity building of the European Citizen Science Association;

• Participatory activities, with a strong focus on cross‐European fertilisation and knowledge sharing between hubs and activity centres.

• Particular effort towards engaging currently excluded groups

Gender Representation in DITOs

According to the statistics in DITOs :• The proportion of females and males is quite evenly represented throughout the events carried on in the project

• Looking closer to the distribution however, it seems that gender distribution depends more on the country than on the type of events carried out.

• Female and male interest and involvement in CS activities could depend on the culture of the country rather than on the topic of the activity.

Awards followed by workshop – CS & Gender

• Setting the Scene: Identify the Issues (if any) and Solutions (if any).• From these role models (only female researchers awarded)  ‐ There seems to be a strong support from female researchers on the topic.

• Why is this the case?• Are women more likely than men to accept inadequate or unpaid salary? • Is the field so new that it is not yet gender‐evaluated?• Numbers from the WS & events of COST Action project & others should be used to evaluate this first perception

Page 14: Citizen Science Gender June 4th 2019 CESIS ‐LATVIA Gender and ECI.pdf · PL 20 1006 50,39 ES 18 6838 49,21 DE 11 1063 61,90 IT 9 807 48,43 Other (workshops online) 7 35 41,51 PT

CS & Gender ‐ reflections

• Identify the issues (academia vs CS)• Obstacles :

• Cultural ... values, customs, educational level, perception, conflict• A gendered science ‐ women “prefer” this soft science ?• CS is not source of funding : ‐ not a problem for women & not attractive to men? • Contribution as a hobby, CS is open, you don’t need a certification – the access is the key – both can be involved in this field, Women are used to doing things unpaid, so it's not a big step for them to do it in the business area.

• Compared to academia: Are there more women because men leave space for women or really that there are more women…?

Page 15: Citizen Science Gender June 4th 2019 CESIS ‐LATVIA Gender and ECI.pdf · PL 20 1006 50,39 ES 18 6838 49,21 DE 11 1063 61,90 IT 9 807 48,43 Other (workshops online) 7 35 41,51 PT

CS & Gender ‐ reflections• Soft skills development in CS among women and men to be measured • Schedule suitable for women – no strict timing, after work events involving also children, work life‐balance approaches

A few ways to go further• Adapt to the ¹ Citizen Science; importance of facilitators’s role & contact person (gender‐role model)

• Targeted topics of events• Not focus on gender = risk to cause imbalance or split• Rather focus on inclusion in general – to make citizen science inclusive it needs to be taken into account people regardless any level of literacy, socio‐economic status, ethnic groups and of course also gender, as a part of a high inclusive engagement model

Next steps:• Comparison of the two fields: women in academic research vs. women in citizen science;• Check the data from the workshops and meetings from the COST action – still to compile & analyse

Page 16: Citizen Science Gender June 4th 2019 CESIS ‐LATVIA Gender and ECI.pdf · PL 20 1006 50,39 ES 18 6838 49,21 DE 11 1063 61,90 IT 9 807 48,43 Other (workshops online) 7 35 41,51 PT

These days, she says, if you’re not on Wikipedia, you don’t exist. “The problem with Wikipedia is that few users edit it compared to the number who use it. Most editors are in America or Europe, and not enough people do New Zealand information.”
