Abstract
Mupirocin is used worldwide for topical treatment ofinfected skin lesions, impetigo, and especially fornasal decolonization of patients with carriage ofStaphylococci, including methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus. Nevertheless, data

regarding the effects of mupirocin on the nasalmucosa, in particular on ciliary beat frequency(CBF), is lacking to date. We tested the CBF ofciliated nasal epithelial cells under the influence ofMupirocin–calcium dissolved in tert-butyl alcohol(TBA) containing media in different concentrationscomparable to clinical use. Ringer’s lactate solutionand TBA served as negative control. Cells werevisualized with a phase contrast microscope, andthe CBF was measured with the SAVA system’sregion of interest method. Mupirocin–calciumdissolved in TBA led to a statistically significanttime- and concentration-dependent decrease inCBF compared to the negative control. TBAaddition without mupirocin also led to a significantdecrease in CBF, although to a lesser extent thanmupirocin/TBA. In conclusion, CBF of human nasalepithelia is significantly reduced by mupirocin–calcium-containing solutions in therapeuticconcentrations. Due to our results in this study, mupirocin as a nasal decolonization agent shouldbe used only with care, with a strictly set medicalindication, and additional care measures should beconsidered.

In ENT, polyhexanide-containing solutions are used to treat nasal infections caused by multiresistantbacteria like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Many forms of commercial nasal solutionscontaining polyhexanide exist, such as gels or solutions for topical use. Data regarding the influence ofpolyhexanide on ciliary beat frequency (CBF) are lacking to date. We tested the CBF of ... [Show fullabstract]

As the ex vivo lifetime of nasal ciliary cells is limited, these cells have to be transferred to a culture mediumfor analysis with vital cytology immediately. Although the ciliary beat frequency (CBF) is likely to changeover time, sufficient data regarding changes in the ex vivo CBF has not been published to date. In thepresent study, nasal epithelial cells were harvested from the mucosa of ... [Show full abstract]

Heated air humidification versus cold air nebulization in newly tracheostomized patients
October 2017 · Head & Neck
Richard Birk · Angela Wenzel · J Ulrich Sommer · [...] · Alexander Händel
Background: After tracheostomy, the airway lacks an essential mechanism for warming and humidifying theinspired air with the consequent functional impairment and discomfort. The purpose of this study was tocompare airway hydration with cold-air nebulization versus heated high-flow humidification on medicalinterventions and tracheal ciliary beat frequency (CBF). Methods: Newly ... [Show full abstract]

In recent years, the positive effect of topically applied estriol nose ointment in the adjuvant therapy ofMorbus-Rendu-Osler (HHT) has been proven. Due to the induced metaplasia, a complete destruction of theciliated cells may be expected. However, data regarding the ciliary function of HHT patients with and withoutthe use of topical estriol application are currently lacking. Ciliated samples ... [Show full abstract]
