Startup Sequence

• Boot– Similar to DOS – POST, Bootstrap program &

diagnostics

• Load O/S– Can be found in Flash, TFTP server, or ROM

• Load Configuration File– Can be found in NVRAM, TFTP, or entered

from console

Startup Commands

• Router # show running-config• Router # show startup-config• Router # reload• Router # startup• Router # erase startup-config• The commands show config, write term,

and write erase, used with Cisco IOS Release 10.3 can also be used for short term

Setup Mode

• [ ] indicate default value – press ENTER to accept• If no default, a ? Appears – enter your choice• CTRL+C will end the process and allow you to begin

again• A YES response to the prompt will load the commands

into RAM and save as startup-config file in NVRAM• You can turn features on with setup, but you cannot

turn them off. • Setup does not support many of the advanced features

of the router

Global Parameters

• Initial prompt is router >

• To rename router, from enable Exec mode– Router # hostname VKP

• You can enter secret encrypted password as part of setup procedure

• You can also enter secret encrypted passwords for virtual terminal

• Make certain you understand procedure
