The Cisco Systems and Net Optics partnership delivers to customers a highly

reliable and transparent threat prevention solution. In a high-availability network,

the loss of a single device or power source must not be allowed to disrupt

network connectivity. At the same time, adding a network security device to

protect the network should not introduce a single point of failure. By combining

Cisco’s growing spectrum of industry-leading Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPSs)

with Net Optics’ rich array of Bypass Switches provides the security of accurate,

comprehensive threat prevention—transparently and without reducing reliability.

Cisco’s proven range of IPS solutions, along with Net Optics’ pioneering leadership

in Bypass technology make for a solid wall of protection against proliferating

threats. Now, customers can be confident in having the combined vigilance of

two trusted leaders safeguarding their critical networks and applications.

In addition, next-generation IPS solutions can now be deployed with complete

transparency, while delivering full protection. Cisco’s wide range of IPSs includes

firewall, VPN and optional content security. Protection ranges from smaller

businesses to large global enterprise networks at the Internet edge, campus

and data center. The comprehensive range of form factors, plus a growing

cohort of new solutions offer unrivaled options for meeting a company’s specific

challenges.

Net Optics Bypass Switches

Whether deployed in Layer-3 mode, Layer-2 mode, or Virtual-Wire (Layer-1),

Cisco IPSs are highly resilient, with redundant power supplies. However, in the

event of an unplanned outage or scheduled maintenance, Net Optics Bypass

Switches allow traffic to be rerouted, providing a trouble-free access port for

in-line network security and monitoring devices. The Bypass Switch, with its

vital Heartbeat functionality, sends a “test” packet to the device that protects

network traffic against link, application, and power failure. This Heartbeat adds

automated link fail-open protection and provides support for 10Mbps to 10Gbps

connectivity and managed models

When an IPS is taken offline, a Bypass Switch will immediately detect

the change, either by link-state or by loss of the Heartbeats, and will re-

route traffic around the IPS. Once the IPS is brought back on-line, traffic

automatically resumes through the appropriate ports. Net Optics offers a

wide range of Bypass Switches, with copper or fiber ports, and speeds of

10/100/1000 Mbps and 10 Gbps. The Bypass Switches provide redundant

power to maximize reliability of the network. Now, the joint solution

from Cisco Systems and Net Optics provides next-generation IPS security

without compromising on reliability.
