Summary of New Findings

Real-life consumer trends and increasing number of devices in the workplace are causing employees worldwide to question relevance of IT policies – and break them

A disconnect exists between IT policies and workers, as employees strongly desire mobile work options and flexibility with devices and applications

IT policies need to keep up with a workforce that is demanding to be connected anywhere, any time, with any device and any information – or employees will do so, regardless of IT policy

IT can increase employee satisfaction if it keeps up with the top market trends – and depending on country/culture, trust employee judgment

The use of video is on the rise for consumer and enterprise communications – almost seven in ten of IT professionals expect the use of video to increase

Q. Does your company have an IT policy outlining acceptable uses of company resources such as personal computers, cellular telephones, smart phones or PDAs?

• The research in this slide shows the disconnect between IT policies and workers – this slide reflects employee knowledge (or lack thereof) of existing IT policies

• Almost half of the workers in the study (47%) either do not have an IT policy on device usage or do not know that one exists

• Growing number of devices in the workplace – and consumer trends such as social media and video – are causing employees to question the relevance of corporate IT, especially if they are not aware of the specific policies

• Of those employees who admit to breaking IT policies, two of every five (41 percent) say it’s because they need restricted programs and applications to get their job done – they’re simply trying to be more productive and efficient

•One of five (20 percent) employees worldwide said they break IT policy because they believe their company or IT team will not enforce it

•Additionally, of employees who have an IT policy, 35 percent say IT does not provide explanation or rationale for why it exists, which can result in greater apathy, misunderstanding, and selective compliance

•About two of three (64 percent) feel IT policies could be improved to reflect real-world needs and work styles
