PSA TOURNAMENT Thank you to all who volunteered and supported the PSA foot- ball tournament on today, Friday, February 27. The tournament was supported by the Dart Philanthropic Foundation, the Jacques Scott Group, and Smoothie King. The players and coaches also appreciate all who came out to cheer on the teams. It was a great day of competition that provided a meaningful and exciting opportunity for eight schools in Cayman. The par- ticipating schools were Cayman International School, Cayman Academy, Triple C, Cayman Prep, Grace Christian Academy, Hope Academy, St. Ignatius, and Wesley Christian Academy. In all, there were 15 teams (11 boys and 4 girls) that participated in 32 games throughout the day. Final results will be posted in the Newsletter next week. PAPERLESS RE-ENROLLMENT WILL BEGIN NEXT WEEK! Re-enrollment for CIS students who will continue to attend CIS for the 2015-2016 school year begins in March. Forms will be sent home next week. CIS is excited to try a new online paperless system. Next week, electronic forms, prepopulated with the current information our database has, will be sent for each student. Please check and update the information, upload the required documents and submit the completed form electronically. You do not need to print it off for us. Your re- enrollment is only complete when we have received both the form and the deposit of CI$1000.00 per student. The deadline for re-enrollment is Monday, March 16, 2015 at the end of the business day. We appreciate your patience with the new system. Modern Learning Reflecons Last week teachers and the community were provided with an opportunity to hear Will Richardson speak about Educang the Modern Learner. Will Richardson set out, as he puts it, to “confuse” us as we think about educa- on for our children and the direcon it can take. Teachers and community members were smulated to think how online networks and social communies can and will influence the educaon of our children. One parent commented, since hearing Will Richardson speak, “ we have had many discussions and debates amongst ourselves as well as with friends and family regarding the topics he presented...It is really great to know that our son is at a school that is focused on providing its children with the best educaon possible to ensure future success.”

Modern Learning Reflections

Last week teachers and the community were provided with an opportunity to hear Will Richardson speak about Educating the Modern Learner. Will Richardson set out, as he puts it, to “confuse” us as we think about educa-tion for our children and the direction it can take. A musical night of:

“In”formance 6:00pm in the ARC

Students in Grades 2 and 3 will be presenting songs and activi-

ties that they are learning in their music classes

This year in order to showcase what students are learning in music class, we are having 3 small con-certs throughout the year for different grades to present. These showcases are in place of the end of the year Spring Concert that we’ve had in the past, and are more focused on what each grade has been doing in class. Please join us for the second show-case of the year, on Tuesday March 3rd where Grade 2 and 3 will perform songs and activities we have been learning in music class. Students should arrive at their homeroom classroom by 5:30pm and the show will start at 6:00pm. They should dress in “nice” clothing i.e. no jeans, flip-flops, t-shirts, etc. We are calling it an “Informance” night, where students are informing the audience about what they learn in class. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email me directly [email protected]

CIS READING FAIR MARCH 17, 2015 IN THE ARC

The Reading Fair will be taking place during Reading Week, which is March 16th-21st. More information will be coming about Reading Week in general, but we wanted families to know about the date of the Reading Fair so that they could get started planning. There is more information attached at the end of the newsletter. A reading fair provides students the opportunity to share their favorite book through a storyboard display. The fair is set up similarly to a science fair and students may dress up like a character from their story when pre-senting.

Students and/or families will choose a favorite fiction story and create a storyboard to take to competition.

The project that is sent from each school will be entered into a final competition at Georgetown Public Library on March 21st, 2015. Island‐wide winners will be deter-mined by the panel of judges, and prizes will be awarded at the final competition on

March 21st, 2015.

The Cayman International School National Honor Society Chapter

CIS is proud to announce the launch of our first chapter of The National Honor Society. The National Honor Society (NHS) is the United States’ premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. Increasingly international schools are launching their own official chapter. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor our students who can demonstrate proven excellence in the areas of scholarship, lead-ership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associat-

ed with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to de-velop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. Our top stu-dents will be joining an organization well recognized by universities and colleges across the

World.

Membership of this organization is not a right, but is earned through a pro-cess of application beginning with a student earning a high cumulative GPA. Students achieving this high academic standard set by CIS will then be in-vited to apply to join. Each application will be reviewed and evaluated by the Faculty Council. Successful applicants will then be inducted into the first

Chapter of the CIS National Honor Society in March.

IB PINNING CEREMONY

On Tuesday morning Sec-

ondary teachers organised a surprise celebration for the

Grade 12 IB students to rec-ognise their hard work and congratulate

them on everything they have achieved so far. The students were ‘summoned’ to the

MPR to be greeted by their parents and teachers and award-

ed their IB lapel pins. The staff spoke individually about the

achievements of each student, recognising their efforts and

victories and wishing them well for their final few months in the programme. We are incredibly proud of our Class of

2015 and wish them the very best of luck in the build-up to

their final exams.

Project Based Learning

Ms. Megan's Grade 7 Science stu-dents were busy on Friday morning attempting to persuade a panel of learned judges to relocate the resi-dents and endemic species of Grand Cayman to a new biome. The win-ning team convinced the panel that a colony on Mars would be the best choice. Well done to Ethan, Jack and Zoe -- and all the Grade Sevens -- for their inspiring presentations.

With Josiah D.

What is your background and heritage? I am 100% Canadian. Which countries have you lived in? I have lived in Canada (for 4 years) and Cayman (for 13 years). How long have you been living in the Cayman Islands? I lived in the Cayman Islands from the time I was a few months old until I was 3, then my family moved back to Canada until I was 7. We moved back to the island when I was 7 and have been here ever since. How many years have you been at CIS?

I have been at CIS for 7 years, I have been here since 6th grade. Describe yourself At least a few of your best and worst personality traits) I would consider my best qualities to be having a strong work ethic and working hard to reach my goals. My worst per-sonality trait would be being too taciturn at times. What is your taste in music? Favorite song of all time, favorite at the moment? My taste on music depends on what I’m doing. If I am relaxing at home I enjoy listening to classic rock. If I’m studying or doing homework, then I like to listen to classical music. If I’m trying to get hyped before a game or for the gym, then I like to listen to hip-hop/rap. My favorite song of all time is Time by Pink Floyd. The song is about living in the moment rather than letting it slip by while trying to plan it. The guitar solo is also awesome. Other than schoolwork and studying, what activities do you enjoy? My favorite activities are going to the gym, playing roller hockey, dirt biking and kiteboarding. I like to stay active in my free time. Describe a time when you wanted to quit, but didn't. Last year when I tore my ACL I was on crutches for four months. The combination of the immobility, strenuous recov-ery, and pain made me want to give up, but my friends, family, and teachers kept me going. What is your favorite quote? Why? “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” Taken from George Lucas’ Star Wars, this quote has always stuck with me. It implies that you have to possess the mentality that you can do something in order for you to achieve it. Trying something isn’t enough; you have to believe that you can do what you are doing and put in 100% of your effort. What is your dream job/career? Why? My dream career is being self-employed and loving what I do. I haven’t had my ‘big idea’ yet, but I can only hope its waiting for me sometime in the near future.
