CIRCODESIGNERS SEEK TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM BEHIND THE PROBLEM.

THE GOAL OF THE BRIEFING PHASE IS MAINLY TO HELP MAKE THE CLIENT REFLECT UPON ITS OWN QUESTION.

- SPARK

AS DESIGNERS WE ARE THE ONES THAT CAN VISUALIZE THE THOUGHTS OF A CLIENT.

- VAN DER VEER DESIGNERS

I RECALL THAT I FELT IT CLICK DURING THE CRADLE TO CRADLE COURSE. [...] THAT MECHANISM, THAT CLICK, THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE WITH CLIENTS.

Technician

The designer gets a solidly defined design brief and is expected to carry this out and may only ask questions to clarify particular aspects of the brief. The client is accepted as knowing exactly what is needed and only

addresses the designer at the end of the projects formulation.

Facilitator

The client is accepted as knowing what is needed but not what is required to achieve it completely. In this case, the designer advises on specialist aspects relating to making the solution space workable. The designer is brought in to the project near the end of its

formulation.

Expert / Artist

The client has a partially formed idea of what is needed and the designer

is required to use his/her expertise to negotiate a formulation of the brief that is workable together with the client. The designer is brought in midway through

the project’s formulation.

Collaborator

The designer and the client mutually work on framing the project, both in

terms of problem and solution spaces.

“Folks who do systems analysis have a great belief in “leverage points.” These are places within a complex system (a corporation, an economy, a living body, a city, an ecosystem) where a small shift in one thing can produce big changes in everything.

We not only want to believe that there are leverage points, we want to know where they are and how to get our hands on them. Leverage points are points of power.“

- Donna Meadows, Places to Intervene in a System
