Principal's Perspective

Mr Rod Buckenara, Principal

The 2014 school year is fast coming to an end for all students and staff. Year 12s have left the school and early start has seen the Year 10s and 11s take over the mantle as the new breed student leaders at Hampton Senior High School.

Graduation for the Year 12s was a very special evening held at the Churchlands Senior High School Concert Hall, the event was a showcase of excellence with both musical items and the customary recognition of subject award winners, special awards for students who have excelled in and around the school community and the school Dux awards for both ATAR and VET categories.

The schools second instalment of the “Lenny” trilogy was much heralded and the dramatic musical drama produced, written and directed by Mr M was again a highlight of the year. Hampton Senior High School has been invited to send a team to Sydney for a Robotics competition; this again is an indication that our students and staff, under the direction of Ms D’Cunha, are very well respected throughout the Western Australian technology sector.

Another significant event coordinated by the ICT Department held during Term 4 was the annual “Texpo” showcase of what our specialist ICT students have been producing within their courses throughout 2014. This course and the student presentations displayed gave parents and community members an insight into the amazing technological skills these individuals are developing.

The upgrades to the Year 7 buildings are almost complete and it must be said that the classrooms that will be occupied by these new students will now provide excellent facilities for them to be educated in.

The upgrades to the school change rooms are also well under way and will be complete later in the year ready for 2015. These renovated rooms will now allow all students to shower and change in some modern and clean facilities, with separate shower facilities for all students.

The entire toilets areas for students and staff are to be completely renovated over the next two years, these upgrades are long overdue, and will begin early 2015 and take approximately six months to complete in each year. When completed in 2016 these facilities too will finally provide our students with clean and modern toilets that the school and community can feel extremely comfortable with.

Year 12 Breakfast and Final AssemblyThis year a fully catered breakfast was enjoyed by the students on the morning of Thursday October 23. This was followed by their final assembly in the gym. After the formal speeches and performance of “Partition” by the Year 12 dance students and a solo item by Shae Wilkes the Year 12s released their balloons and were formally farewelled as the graduating class of 2014.

PaintballThe Year 12 final outing for the year was to Paintball Skirmish. This has become a popular excursion with Year 12s who after paintballing each other try to deliver the same outcome to the staff.

PRIZE WINNERCongratulations to Mrs Jayde Walsh (our School Psychologist and former student) who recently won the award as the Early Career School Psychologist for 2014. Well done Mrs Walsh!

SEAThe Year 9 SEA Curtin Mentor Program is well and truly in full swing with the series workshops completed at John Forrest, Governor Stirling Lockridge and Hampton. Over 300 students are expected to attend Curtin over the two days of the big days out.

Other events have kept our students actively considering their options for higher education. With open days and information nights occurring over the last couple of months students been able to visit all of the universities.Through the SEA Curtin Project our students have had the chance to visit UWA, ECU and Curtin University.

Hampton SHS @ ECU Joondalup

How do you entertain 30+ Year 9 and 10 students on a sunny Friday afternoon? Take them to ECU Joondalup and let them loose in the Engineering and Sports Science departments! Hampton SHS students had an absolute ball exploring the amazing state of the art facilities at the campus, they were given free rein to use the equipment to measure and record various sporting techniques including agility tests, vertical leaps and reaction times. After all that strenuous activity students were treated to pizza for lunch, all compliments of the Future Students team at ECU. I have a real soft spot for this campus where I have spent nearly a quarter of my life studying and lecturing, so it was a delight to spend the day there with Hampton students

Uni student for a day – Curtin University

Hampton Year 9 and 10 students enjoyed a fantastic day at ECU Joondalup (pictured left) while students from Hampton and Cyril Jackson joined forces and spent an awesome day experiencing a day in the life of a uni student at Curtin. The Student Ambassadors team at UWA enjoyed showing off their campus to Governor Stirling students from Years 10 and 11 (pictured below)

Other events include the Student Edge visit to Governor Stirling where the team engaged around 150 Year 10 students with their Career Match Service. This service provides students with a personality profile that includes excellent tips for career planning and CV and job application writing.

Ms Bandarian is in the process of forging some very exciting partnerships with the ECU Sports Science team and SEA schools. If interested you can check these out in the SEA newsletter.

On September 12 approximately 100 CJSC and HSHS students spent a full day at Curtin University. The aim of the excursion was to give Year 12 and selected Year 11 students the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a uni student. Being a normal attendance day for university students, our students certainly got to see the campus in full swing. The program for the day included a future students presentation, capture Curtin (race around the campus), a TISC session, Student Ambassador discussion panel and faculty and leadership activities. In addition students were treated to morning tea and a range of prizes (compliments of the SEA Curtin Project) as well as receiving gift cards to purchase lunch (compliments of the AHEAD program at Curtin).

Students spent the day in groups based on preference of area of study: Business, Engineering, Health, Science and Humanities. Students from the two schools worked exceptionally well together and obtained valuable experience in communication, team work, problem solving and leadership. Students who selected the Curtin Business School activity, pictured left, were given the chance to collaborate in the most sophisticated university trading room in the country. Activities included brain storming marketing scenarios and making use of the Bloomberg software to access and analyse financial data. Sheldon Smith (Engineering Enabling Course coordinator) had the Engineering group suited up ready for action in a team challenge, pictured below. Sheldon was so impressed with the team work displayed that he felt compelled to award medals to all Engineering participants.

Our students are to be congratulated for their outstanding behaviour on the day as they demonstrated maturity, asked articulate and well framed questions and were a credit to our schools. A huge thank you goes to Tina McLoughlin (Prospective Student Advisor, Curtin University) for organising the day for us as the activities were fun, engaging and informative and the students had a fantastic time. Thanks go also to Lisa Crofts, Sam Henderson, Jarrod Carlson, Cardi Shearer and Joyce Caddy for their assistance on the day with supervision of students.

Solo Night (Years 11 & 12)This was held on Wednesday October 20 in the Theatre. In these performances the students choreograph their own routine which is part of their practical assessment. Again our dancers provided the audience with an excellent evening of entertainment. Congratulations to all of the dancers for their wonderful performances.

Lenny 2 The PromiseThis production by the Specialist Performing Arts (SPA) students was the third “Lenny” piece. Lenny Boy, a short 15 minute improvisation based around the theme of bullying and acceptance was written and performed in 2012. It was a humorous and entertaining piece that was presented to several primary school audiences.

In 2013, Lenny, his neurotic mother and a group of bullies returned in a two act scripted musical featuring all original songs, an extended narrative and new characters. The cast and crew of over 40 performed Lenny as part of the Arts Festival.

2014 saw the enthusiastic group of SPA students write, produce and perform a sequel that had fresh new songs, conflicts and subplots. The students worked hard for many months and in October performed Lenny2 The promise over three evenings and two primary school matinees. This was a great achievement by these students who should all be proud of their fantastic efforts to display their great talent. Thanks also to Mr Mihaljevich and all of the supporters of the Specialist Performing Arts Program.

Musical soundtracks from both plays are still available.

For the second year in a row teams from Hampton SHS featured prominently amongst the place-getters in the state-wide Western Australian Book-in-a-Day competition!

Following our surprise win as the Best Middle School Book in WA in 2013, one of two teams we entered, our hopes were high in 2014 and not without some justification, as all of last year’s winners were back to challenge for the titles.

In 2014 we entered four teams comprised of 31 students: seven students entered the Upper School section, and three teams entered the Middle School section. Of these teams the Year 11s in the Upper School division came second across the state with a Highly Commended book titled “Stuck in a Jam”, one of the Middle School teams, “Wishing on Artemis” came third receiving a Commendation, and another team, “Key to the Key” received a special award for Best Illustrations. This is an absolutely amazing effort, and one that the school is rightly very proud of.

This achievement placed Hampton SHS alongside such schools as Perth Modern, Perth College and PLC, highlighting the quality and talent of our students.

The award requires a group of no more than ten students to plan, draft, write, illustrate and publish a 4000 word (Middle School) or 8000 word (Upper School) book in a 12 hour period. This is challenging, but superbly rewarding. My nomination for Best Team Performance incredibly had to go to the only non-nominated team, whose organisation, drive and team spirit was just awesome: this is a skill in itself.

The students had been training during lunch breaks and after school to ensure things operated smoothly on the day. To see the illustrators in action, printing off 40-plus linocuts in just over an hour was mind-blowing, and typified the work ethos required to compete successfully against such high achieving schools as those mentioned above.

As a measure of how successful Hampton SHS has been these last two years is the fact that in WA alone 110 books were entered! Our success has been recognised both by the competition’s organisers, the judges and other competing schools, who lavished praise upon the quality of the writing and illustrating coming out of Hampton SHS.

A huge thank you to Mr Bishop for his efforts in helping the illustrators learn how to produce quality linocut prints.

Congratulations should be extended to the following students for their amazing efforts: Annette Barlow, Katie Nelson, Mariam Wali Ali, Jessica Peyman, Klimie Cruz, Sean Devitt, Francis Plando, NatareeKaewpong, Hannah Francisco, Hannah David, Sofia Bacusmo, Michelle Feune-Hetenyi, Lucy Donaldson, CezeraCritti-Schnaars, Suzanne Stevely, Nita Sok, Eric Lu, Hayden Suero, Elise Francis, Emma Hayes, Jackson Britza, Claudia Emanuele, Beatrice Panganiban, Samuel Bourke, Joanne White, TeaganNayler, Amerin Fontana, Shona Murphy and Jin Chen.

Keep your eyes and ears open for an exhibition of prints and paintings from this year’s award winning illustrators. The event will be a fundraiser for the 2015 entrants to participate in WABIAD. All proceeds go to Princess Margaret Hospital.

Light SpeedThe End of Year Dance Concert was held in the Specialist Performing Arts Theatre on October 15, 16 and 17. Over 100 students from the Gifted and Talented, Dare 2 dance and the Specialist Cheer Dance programs performed a range of dance styles choreographed by some of Perth’s finest choreographers and dance practitioners. These included Teneesha Crockford, Kathryn fuller, Danielle grills, Kirra Maguire and Danielle Rock. The students had also contributed to the choreography and should be congratulated for their critical and creative ideas. The dances were designed to extend, challenge and develop our dancers and to display their many talents. Light Speed was a fabulous evening of dance and it is wonderful to see so much hard work by the students and staff warmly appreciated by enthusiastic audiences.

exhibition and as such, classes, staff and parents were given the opportunity to place a vote for the ‘Students’ Choice Award’, ‘Teachers’ Choice Award’ and overall ‘People’s Choice Award’. These awards went to students who created artworks that displayed exceptional skill and talent in the creation of meaningful art. Congratulations goes to this year’s award winners: Sam Lucich in Year 12 Stage 1 Visual Art for the ‘Students’

Choice Award’, Klimie Cruz in Year 11 Stage 2 Visual Art for the ‘Teachers’ Choice Award’ and Sara Potter in Year 12 Stage 2 Visual Art for the ‘People’s Choice Award’. The exhibition was a great success, demonstrating the wealth of skillfully and conceptually talented students here at Hampton SHS. We very much look forward to seeing what the next generation has to offer as we look to next year.

Art ExcursionDuring Term 3 the Visual Arts students went on an excursion to Perth City and Northbridge to check out the Streetart. There was an amazing array of pieces throughout the streets and laneways. Some of the students have used these ideas to paint the murals on the D verandah.

The ‘D- Block Mural’Year 11 and 12 Stage 1 Visual Art students have been busy researching, planning, designing, creating and bringing to life the new mural that currently resides on the walls of our ‘D-Block’ corridor. Here you will find an exciting collaborative artwork that was designed to inspire, entertain and educate fellow and future members of Hampton SHS. Street artists around the globe inspired the creation of this mural, however our students were particularly inspired by the street art that they visited earlier in the year on our excursion to the colourful streets of Perth City. Students researched and explored social issues and worked to produce a meaningful display that makes comment on the world around us. Why not come and visit us to see the fantastic result from our senior school students!

CheerIn November our teams competed at the CUA Stars n Stripes Competition at Challenge Stadium. Despite several drop outs prior to competing, we are very proud of how the teams conducted themselves, showing sportsmanship and support to each other and the other teams competing. It was a huge competition with an extremely high standard and the teams did a fantastic job representing the school.

Hampton Sovereigns came 7th (in a very tough section)

Hampton Reign Hip Hop Dance came 4th

Hampton Dynasty Pom routine came 2nd

A huge thank you and congratulations must go to Ms Maguire, with support from Ms Holder and Kathryn Fuller (ex-Hampton student) for their coaching, choreography and ongoing organisation and training of the teams. Ms Maguire gave up her entire weekend to ensure the students had another opportunity to compete.

LUCKY STIFF (Annual production)This musical comedy (based on The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo), directed and produced by Mr Wilson was performed in the Specialist Performing Arts Theatre in late July. Mr Wilson also provided the piano accompaniment for the musical numbers and Mrs Otago choreographed the dance routines. Among the actors were Anthea Wilkie, Jimi Mooney (making a return to school after graduating last year), Annette Barlow, Mariam Wali Ali, Brianna Petrovski, Jessica Peyman and Dildeep Singh. It was also pleasing to see so many younger students joining the cast and we hope they will return for future musical productions.if there is room

Eden Hill Primary Engineering Visit

Our Year 9 engineering students had another opportunity to provide an engaging and practical lesson for our local primary school students. This time it was Eden Hill Primary School’s turn to conduct the “Zip Line Challenge”. The task was to construct a vehicle (from a variety of materials) which would travel down a zip line at the fastest possible speed. Teamwork, creativity and scientific thinking were directed into an incredible variety of Zip-car designs. All students gained from the activity and our Year 9 tutors did a wonderful job in representing Hampton SHS by providing the information and support to the primary school students as well as conducting the competition. Thanks to Jarrod Carlson and Paul Muir (our “WA Engineering Teacher of the Year Award” recipient!) for their hard work in organising this event.

Year 8 Applied Science Sustainability ProjectAs part of the Applied Science Special Program, the Year 8s and Year 9s have been given an exciting opportunity to investigate wind turbines. Since construction, students have been conducting a number of tests in order to optimise their electricity generation capabilities. Investigations on the blade shape, size, length, width, material and number of blades as well as the best gearing for the generator have been conducted and data collected. The challenge will then be to use this to construct the most efficient wind turbine possible. Already showing some very promising results the students are winding up to an electric final competition that I’m sure will blow us all away…

National Science Week CompetitionNational Science Week ran from the 16-24 August. The 2014 theme was ‘Food for our future: Science feeding the world.’ The Year 8 and Year 10 Applied Science Special Program (ASSP) classes took part in a competition during this week. They were given the challenge of researching a topic relevant to the theme and creating a poster, in only one hour. A number of interesting topics were covered by the students, including synthetic meat, eating insects, GMOs, algaculture, aquaculture and 3D printing. The students did a great job and the posters were displayed in the library. Congratulations to the winning teams, Suzanne Stevely and Hannah David (Year 8: Aquaculture) and KristianSapere and Tyler Isard (Year 10: Insect Consumption).

Teacher Development School for ScienceHampton SHS became a Teacher Development School (TDS) for Secondary Science this year (we were already a TDS for Technologies). There are only two other Secondary Science TDS’ in the State. The role of a TDS is to provide support and professional learning opportunities for other teachers in a particular subject area.

In order to deliver a number of professional learning events, our school received a budget for two years and Jaelee Parisotto was appointed TDS coordinator of Science. As a TDS for Secondary Science, the TDS coordinator and Science HOLA (Luke Chapman) worked together to plan and deliver a number of successful professional learning events throughout the year. These events have included work shadowing opportunities, delivering two SWITCH short courses for primary teachers transitioning into teaching secondary science, a workshop on assessment in science, a workshop on the new ATAR courses commencing in 2015 and a SPICE workshop on Western Australian Curriculum resources for the SEA network.

All members of the Science department are to be commended for their contributions to the school’s new role as a Secondary Science TDS. The expertise of our Science teachers has been showcased to other Science teachers throughout the state, some of whom travel long distances to attend professional learning events at our school in order to observe our primary transition ‘Bright Sparks’ program and our Applied Science Special Program.

Aurecon Bridge Building CompetitionIn Term 3 the Year 9 engineering students participated in the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition, where the students were tasked with building a bridge out of balsa wood to support as much weight as possible. During the planning stage, students researched many different types of bridges and consulted with a civil engineer to ensure their bridge designs were feasible. The construction process was very time consuming, with the students sacrificing many lunchtimes to ensure their bridges were completed in time. The best three bridges were taken to SciTech, where they were tested to see how much weight they could support before collapsing. Although Hampton did not win the competition, our bridges performed admirably, with one supporting almost 15 kilograms!

Workplace Industry Pathway Training or WIPTThe EA (Enterprise Access) “trade name” has been replaced by WIPT (Workplace Industry Pathway Training). Ms Woodacre, Ms Francis and Ms Donohoe have been happy to welcome a new group of enthusiastic students as the inaugural members of WIPT. These students have already participated in a two day induction at Altone Rec Centre and are currently in the workplace or studying at Polytechnic West for two days a week.

Public Sector GraduatesCongratulations to Zoe Brown, Shanan Deing and Jacinta Scheepens on the completion of their traineeship through a government department and the attainment of Certificate II Government. All of the girls are now in full time employment.

Workplace LearningVisiting students in the workplace is always a highlight for the VET coordinators. Many of the recently left Year 12 students have gained apprenticeships, full time, part time or casual work through their school work placements. This is a just reward for the hard work the students have put in throughout two years of Upper School.

The VET department would like to THANK all of the fantastic and enthusiastic employers of our students and look forward to continuing the partnership in years to come.

LOV BEAUTYSara Potter is pictured in the LOV Beauty salon. Congratulations go to Sara who was the recipient of the top student for Certificate II Retail, Makeup and Skincare at the school’s Year 12 graduation ceremony. Jacinta Scheepens was the award winner for Certificate III Beauty Services. Jacinta has since gained employment in the beauty industry for which she has a great passion.

Very soon LOV Beauty will be “open for business”. At the moment the students have started manicure, pedicure and eyebrow tinting and will soon be industry ready in these treatments. We look forward to seeing the community of Hampton in our salon early in 2015.

WIPT into shape!

Congratulations to these six Hampton boys for gaining a place out of 14 students into the Metal Fabrication Cert II at Midland TAFE. This is the first time this has been offered to Year 10 students. If the students do well they will automatically gain entry for next year in the School Pre- App program. They all turned up on time, early in fact and looking mighty fine in their spanking brand new outfits. They will attend every Thurs & Fri until the end of term hopefully completing two units of competency.

Try a Trade D. Pettiford, W Thomas, Oran Daley, L Lucich, K, Christie, K White, E Bellaney

The boys (listed above) are having a great time at Balga TAFE.

They have built a brick wall, rendered it and are now designing a pattern to tile the wall. This has been a great opportunity for these students and they are really enjoying the TAFE atmosphere and they have all behaved themselves!!

At our recent Year 12 presentation ceremony we celebrated with students who excelled in a range of courses. Congratulations to Sara Potter - top student for Certificate II Tourism in its inaugural year, and congratulations to Angela White - top student for Certificate III Business. We wish Angela well in her TAFE course Certificate IV Human Resources. Congratulations to Marcel Szikszai who won ATAR pathway course awards for Applied Information Technology and Computer Science. Also congratulations to Shelby Baile for winning the Business Management and Enterprise Stage 3.

We wish all WACE exams students the very best for their future results.

CERTIFICATE II TOURISMEarly start has a new class of enthusiastic students ready to learn about Tourism and put into practice their skills in the focus area: the Swan Valley Region. So far they have explored a number of cities around the world researching their attractions followed by a student presentation debating the best city to visit.

In teams, students have brainstormed ideas for a future task of a new Swan Valley Zoo, thinking about a distinctive and appealing zoo that does not currently exist – some great ideas are already emerging such as Prehistoric Zoo, African Safari and Mythological Zoo. Their concept models were on display at our Texpo event.

Arrangements for the first excursion to Whiteman Park are underway, where students will be planning and completing a small package for young children to use whilst at the park, including a quiz based on the attractions at Whiteman Park.

Students recently completed a team activity demonstrating their collaboration, communication and team work whilst creation an egg package. Their designs were dropped from various levels with two successful teams being “uncrackable”.

ICT @ Hampton

CERTIFICATE III BUSINESSThe highlight of the year for one group of Certificate III business students was the successful completion of the Leavers Book. With a tight budget and restricted time Mrs Francis’ class completed the book ready for graduation. The Year 12 students certainly appreciated your initiative and the finished product. Well done to all involved.

Other groups helped time-poor teachers with a car wash business on the school premises. It gave them the opportunity to see some of the pitfalls and benefits of running their own business and dealing with a range of ‘customers’.

Early start has seen three classes of Certificate III Business – all ready to embark on numerous practical tasks and theory to gain their certificate. This year Workplace Health and

Safety is the focus. Students have to complete their General and Business industry specific WHS certificate on-line, as well create a handy guide for a particular WHS issue and do a presentation on the new legislation. Plans are underway for each class to conduct a hazard and risk assessment at a local Recreation and Pool Centre where a report will highlight their findings.

Students have participated in a number of team activities learning employability skills such as communication, collaboration and negotiation skills, which will be essential for the many tasks to follow next year.

Certificate II Business and IT students have just completed their respective courses. Once again the Lemonade stalls and Burger businesses were popular as an avenue to learning skills in business documents and customer service.

It is important that all students enrolled in a certificate course ensure that they work to schedule and complete each Unit of Competency within the time constraints and to the required standard. Every item of evidence is crucial to the completion of a full certificate.

TEXPOOur annual Texpo showcase event and ICT Specialist awards program was once again successful. Students, staff, parents and special guests who attended all commented on the range of work displayed and the enthusiasm of our students. Kudos to the Year 8 and 9 specialist students who hosted the evening along with ICT staff. Among the range of work on show were competitive computer games developed with Scratch programming – from Year 8 and 9s, podcasts, Flash animations and websites.

This year there were some distinctly new additions to our showcase. The 3D printer (sponsored by the Schools Pathways Program) came into its own with students designing their 3 D maze games and printing them. Thanks to Mr Thirlwell for the long hours of work in organising the printing of the mazes. Other 3D computer design work was impressively displayed on canvas at Texpo.

Jon Luke (Year 9) brought in the arcade game he created and built which was a great success. We celebrate the innovation of our students.

The Year 8 specialist class amazed everyone with their creative theme adventures for the new Probot robots. These included: Frederick’s fairytale adventures, Drive School, Na-Na the banana car rescuing Princess Pineapple, the Jungle adventure and the interplanetary space adventure theme. These will be used by the Year 7 classes next year and we hope they will enjoy them while learning programming.

For the little ones and the young at heart, the Bee-Bot robots named after popular children’s TV characters buzzed their way about the “Adventure Playground” mat.

Year 9 and Year 10 specialist students competing in the FIRST Lego League at Curtin University, used Texpo as a platform to practice their speeches and run their robots, suitably impressing visitors with their critical thinking skills and team work in action.

RobocupThis year, for the first time, we participated in three categories. Robocup Dance, Rescue and Soccer. We ended up taking 40 students, had 3 Dance teams, 1 soccer team and 6 rescue teams. The entries for Robocup were higher than last year, over 250 students. Our students were a credit to our school, both in their respective events as well as off field, so to speak.

Much to our delight one of our dance teams, one rescue team and our soccer team all made it to the finals on Saturday. If only you could have seen the formidable competition from Sacred Heart, Chisholm, All Saints, Trinity, Helena College/Secondary schools. As well as teams from Perth Mod, Ellenbrook, Melville SHS, to name some of them.

Alas no trophies. At the finals support from Mr Buckenara and Mr

Piggott who dropped in to visit was appreciated by the students.

Congratulations to Hayden Suero, Andrei Angeles, Callum Dunne (Yr 8s), Khush Patel and Nihal Hirani (Yr 9s), who were in sixth place overall in rescue at the end of the elimination rounds on Friday and there were lots of teams. Swarina Rajkarnikar, Cameron Burns, Lachlan Paine and queen of the soccer programming - Jemma Thomson (our replacement sensors and soccer ball only arrived the day before!) It was a team effort of course with students from all years, supported by all of the ICT staff.

Year 8 SocialThe Year 8 Social was held on Wednesday night of the last week of Term 3. The night was a great success, full of flashing disco lights and pumping dance tunes cut by our one and only Zachary Lyn in Year 10. Our students got into the spirit and danced the night away and tried their luck in the array of disco games ranging from dance contests, to the limbo and partner pose challenges. We witnessed them fold in half in the limbo challenge and give it their best to beat Mr Dean and Mrs Butterworth in the freeze-pose challenge, which they did. The boys seemed to show-up the girls in the dance-offs, breaking it down and pulling some impressive moves! All in all, these deserving Year 8s demonstrated a positive and fun attitude, making the night one to be remembered!

The evening drew to a close with classwork presented from each specialist class in a very professional and engaging manner. Special thanks to our youngest and budding MCs of the evening, Samuel Bourke and Hayden Suero in Year 8 who grew in confidence and humour over the evening. We teachers are very proud of all of you.

Congratulations to all specialist students on their individual growth and achievement, especially,

BIG DAY OUT (Athletics)

The annual athletics carnival was held on Thursday August 28. The weather was great and a large number of students participated in traditional track and field events while others enjoyed novelties such as the Tug of War, three legged races or joined in the volleyball games. It was also great to see so many students wearing their house colours and supporting their team mates.

Interschool athleticsOn Friday November 17 Hampton participated in the D division interschool athletics carnival. It was a very busy day for staff and many athletes who had to compete in multiple events throughout the day. The students who attended the carnival performed at the highest standard making sure all events had a student in them to maximise the schools opportunities to win points. The hard work of the boys who did well to finish in the top three in most events was equally matched by the effort of the girls, many of whom had been involved with the dance concert all week. The students really demonstrated the school motto LABOR OMNIA VINCIT that hard work can conquer all as by the end of the day Hampton was the champion school. We also had a number of individual champions, Tyrone Riley (Upper School), Marcus White (Year 10) and Joseph Hinder (Year 9) in the boys competition. Bailey Derksen finished 3rd in the Year 8 boys, while Caitlin Hill finished 2nd in the Year 8 and Crystal Young finished 2nd in the Year 9 girls. Over all an excellent performance by all the students and a victory well deserved!

CRICKET On November 5 Hampton SHS had two competitive teams in thisT20 competition. Our boys from Years 8 & 9 played three games against a specialised cricket school in John Forrest. The Hampton boys were really competitive in each of the three games. Unfortunately they went down in all three but as the day went on the boys from Hampton improved in all areas. The team was really consistent without anyone really standing out from a team perspective.

The girls’ team (also Year 8 & 9 students) dominated all the way through the round robin. They defeated three different teams including John Forrest. The girls were all super impressive especially Sheldyn Cooper. Sheldyn dominated all day with the bat and ball and more importantly led the team superbly. The girls finished on top of the ladder at the end of the round robin but unfortunately went down to John Forrest in the grand final. The girls and boys should be extremely proud of their efforts and achievements throughout this wonderful day.

AFL FOOTBALLOn November 6, some of the girls in Years 8 & 9 represented Hampton SHS in girls AFL Football. This was a big day with over 10 teams competing. The girls played six games in total with a winning record of four. Hampton ended up finishing third overall which was a high achievement in itself. Some of the girls did so well that they were invited to participate in the All Stars game. These girls included: Sheldyn Cooper, Caitlin Hill, Crystal Young, SorpheaL Orr, Tazma Hutson and Hayley Smith. This was a really good effort on the day by all of the girls.

This year has been an eventful year in the STEP program. We have had some ups and downs but we made it. Early start has begun with a fantastic bunch of Year 11s joining the 12s and we are looking forward to having a great year in 2015 with this student group. This year we have had other additions to the class in the form of two Axolotls. We thank Amanda Hogg

STEP News

for her donation of the Axolotls and all the equipment we needed to keep them. They have been a welcome addition to the classroom and have created much interest among the students.

Our vegetable garden has been productive again and the school staff have supported our enterprise by purchasing our plants and produce. We would also like to thank Elaine Lord and Fay Wharmby for their generous donation of plants that they propagate and donate to us to sell. We really appreciate this. We would also like to thank Lesley McKenzie for conducting our mock job and workplace interviews earlier in the year.

The students have been fortunate again to do Workplace Learning. We have had great support from local businesses for our Workplace Learning program. They have hosted our students and allowed them to gain valuable experience and employability skills.

Some of the highlights of the year would be, watching the Year 12s walk across the stage at Graduation, conducting a Sushi Making workshop with the students, making hamburgers that rival anything a fast food joint could produce and past students returning to visit to share their successes.

RUOK DayThis whole school event was held on Thursday September 4. The day had two aims:

a) provide students with the confidence and awareness to start a conversation and ask their friends and peers if they are okay

b) increase knowledge and awareness of supports available in the community.

The day’s activities included a free dress (fancy dress) day, sausage sizzle, boost juice, activities and agency stalls at lunch time. Some of the groups represented were Kids Helpline, Headspace, Reach Out and Beyond Blue.

Some of the activities included a music and talent quest, Sumo, basketball match, board games and a staff versus students tug of war. All of the students enjoyed the day and in Period 5 teachers facilitated an activity or lesson related to the aim of the day.
