Presidents Letter Well many of you may not know, but this is the last letter I will write for you as President of this wonderful association for independent publish-ers in Colorado.

I have served a two-year termsomething that isnt normally donebecause I wanted to make sure that I was passing the proverbial baton to someone who was as committed to CIPA as I have been. When Mary Walewski agreed to become Vice Presidentthe stepping stone to the presidency, I couldnt have been more pleased.

Mary was the person who brought me onto the board 5 years ago. She asked me because she said, youre not afraid of speaking up.

I laughed and said, Yep, I do have a big mouth. Its been such a pleasure serving in this position. My main goal was to get CIPA financially viable again. Through hard work and asking many of you to step up and help, that goal has come a long way. We still have debt. Previous administrations from many years ago werent as fis-cally responsible as we have been the past few years, and were still handling that. But we pay our bills on time. Were paying down debt sys-tematically. So I will take a win on that.

I also have enjoyed having you all come visit my Church once a month. Parishioners love having youthey tell me all the time how nice it is to

    Presidents Letter (cont.)

What does it take to write novels that are good enough to become local best sellers and earn places as finalists in writing contests? Mark Stevens, the local best-selling author of Antler Dust, Buried by the Roan, Trapline, and the forthcoming Lake of Fire will provide insight into how to get good at the craft of writing, how to trans-late those skills into a novel that can sell, and how to promote your work. But what if you are a writer of nonfiction? This presenta-tion is for you, too, because many of the things Mark will talk about can be applied to memoirs and other nonfic-tion projects.

Mark Stevens has been a reporter for The Christian Sci-ence Monitor, The Rocky Mountain News, and The Den-ver Post, was a national field producer for The Mac-Neil/Lehrer NewsHour, and has worked in school public relations. He now owns his own public relations and stra-

tegic communications business. Mark lives in Denver with his wife and his two grown daughters. Antler Dust has been a local best seller and Trapline is a finalist for the 2015 Colorado Book Awards, as well as a finalist for the CAL Writing Awards.

    Roundtables:

After Mark Stevens' presentation, we'll have roundtables so you can learn more about writing and promotion strategies for your book. Here are your roundtable hosts:

Mark Stevens will answer more of your ques-tions following his presentation.

Melanie Mulhall, editor and writing coach, will host a table to discuss applying Mark's writing ideas to nonfiction and memoir.

Karen Douglass: Author and writing coach, Ka-ren will also address your writing questions re-lating to memoir, fiction and poetry.

Stan Moore & Mary Walewski: How can CIPA help you promote your book? Author Stan Moore will answer questions about the CIPA Brigade, which publicizes our members' events and CIPA Vice President Mary Walewski will talk about the CIPA Catalog on Pinterest and our other social media outlets.

Patricia Ross: The CIPA EVVYs deadline is ap-proaching! Patricia Ross of Hugo House Publish-ing and CIPA President answers your questions about book awards and what to do to capitalize on your book awards.

Debra Jason: Author and internet marketer Debra Jason will be on hand to answer your questions about promoting your book on social media and the web.

    Tips Creating a Promotional Brochure

10 Tips to Creating a Promotional BrochureDos and Donts Robert L. Schram DOS:

    1. Know your purpose

Before you begin, know why youre creating your bro-chure and what you want it to accomplish. This will help with messaging, and with knowing if you should implore custom features to execute that message.

    2. Make the cover count

Since the cover of your brochure is the first thing people see, it will determine whether or not they bother opening it. Your brochure cover should be powerful, captivating and clean.

    3. White space is okay

Many people have a tendency to want to cram as much as possible onto a page, but this can lose your audiences attention. If your brochure appears too busy, the eye will have no path to follow, in which case most people will abandon trying to read through the piece.

    4. Use creative typography

Use creative typography that represents your business and that grabs the eye. But remember: everything in moderation. Overdoing this can come across as inexperi-enced or unprofessional. Keep in mind the basic rules: scale matters, unify with color or style, contrast is good, and keep it legible.

    5. Break conventional perspectives

Theres no rule anywhere that says your information must be segmented by each brochure panel. Break perspective and traditional brochure expectations.

    6. Have a clear call to action

Make sure your reader knows exactly what he or she

needs to do. Make sure the call to action is visible, con-cise and doesnt require work on behalf of the customer.

    DONTS:

    7. Stick to the age-old adage

A picture is worth a thousand words. Throwing para-graphs of text across your brochure panels without any visual aid is the quickest way to lose your reader.

    8. All feature, no benefit

People are only interested in what applies to them. The benefits of reading your book have everything to do with your customer.

    9. Quit talking about yourself

While you may feel its necessary to explain yourself, most authors have a tendency to talk too much about themselves. Think about your customer and center your brochure on the problem you solve for them, not the product you do it with.

    10. Trying to say it all

Trying to cram too much information into your brochure can hurt your messaging. Keep in mind that your bro-chure is an overview, not an anthology.
