Making it REAL with the “Power of Story” At the Bloomington Center we, students and staff alike, learn and help each other discover our individual uniqueness. In the process we create and recreate a story of who we are and what we believe. The process of figuring out who we are and the creative act of articulating and sharing our stories empowers us to direct our lives and shape our future. This yearbook is an intentional collection of stories told with photos and words to share with each other. It is a testimony to our growth and a celebration of our hard work and efforts this year... This is the power of story. To all the students and staff who are moving on, know that your story will always remain with us. For those staying, we can look forward to discovering new possibilities, opening ourselves to new perspectives, facing with courage and perseverance new challenges, and creating new stories of who we are becoming. My best as always, Karen Thomas, Program Director

“After 3 years at CIP, I’ve really been able to use the program to further my success. I’m a Student Ambassador and a member of the Student Senate. I love telling prospective students and their families about our program. I’m able to identify with their struggles because I have had my own, and I am able to share with them how CIP has supported me. I’m a senior psychology major at IU, and I’m currently working as a research assistant in a psychology lab specializing in social psychology. I also serve as a committee member for the IU chapter of the National Society for Leadership and Success. I graduate in May 2014 and am starting to look at graduate schools.”

“Fame and fortune is my goal, appreciation is what I strive for. Name's Joe Banchik and this is my story. Currently I take classes at IU and Ivy Tech, I also play piano and drums, act and draw clothing designs. I hope to become famous and make a lot of cash in the entertainment or the mens' fashion world.”

“My internship is at the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department. I'm in C-Step working towards going to Ivy Tech. I'm not sure what exactly my degree will be, but I am thinking about something with business and technology. In the past I would give up when I faced an obstacle or things became difficult, but I am learning different kinds of ways to persevere. I'm doing a lot of work on establishing routines; I feel less tired in the morning, I'm able to stick to my schedule, and I'm less stressed staying on top of my life and goals!”

“I am currently taking a class at Broadview Learning Center which is preparing me for the Accuplacer exam at Ivy Tech. I’ve worked a lot with staff this year to improve my social thinking skills. I’ve gained more confidence about myself--it’s given me a greater sense of independence and helped me make some very strong friendships.”

“I am graduating from Ivy Tech this semester with my degree in General Studies. Ivy Tech was pleasant and the professors really worked with me. I struggled with deadlines, expectations, meeting course requirements, and how I was going to be judged and evaluated at the end of each semester... it made me feel incredibly anxious. Now I've gained more confidence, I worked hard to accept uncertainty and do my best.”

“I feel like I’ve broken out of a cocoon the last couple years. Developing friendships is the most important thing to me about being in Bloomington. Recording with Jim is inspiring, and I love writing for the Ryder Magazine in town.”

“I am in the process of trying to redefine my goals and figure out the future. I’m thankful for Mendy, Don, and my mom and their support in my life.”

“I'm learning how to regulate my emotions. It was really hard for me to work on this in the past. I have a lot of fun in Bloomington--the skate park is fun, and I always feel less stressed after I go. I'm also in IU’s Anime Club and take free Japanese classes at the IU culture center. My internship is at the animal shelter. Part of my job is to give the cats extra love, I clean them, and socialize with them, help them get comfortable. Some cats get comfortable right away, others take a few months. I don't think that there are bad cats, they just have to get used to the environment.”

“Through my internship I have learned that working at a pet shop is something I would like to do as a career. Kayle Lewis and the job coaches have really helped me improve my career skills and helped me realize that I am good at working with animals and in a pet shop. I’ve become more independent, learned how to budget my money and save for big events such as concerts--I’ve also built friendships with people who I would love to stay friends with even after CIP.”

“I have a passion to help others and my internship at Down Syndrome Family Connection makes me feel that I am one step closer to fulfilling my purpose in life. I absolutely love paintball and I would like to be a paintball coach sometime in the future. I like sharing my passions with others and helping them learn as well. I have passions to write and succeed in school. Right now I have a lot of online relationships but also want to meet and hangout with new people. My social mentor has been important to me because I get to meet and hangout with someone in person. Having more face to face friends is one of my goals.”

“I'm working on a B.S. in Informatics at IU and a certificate in PC Support and Administration at Ivy Tech. Also at Ivy Tech I am taking GenEd classes for my requirements for the B.S. in Informatics. I am a member of the Cognitive Science Club and was accepted into The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) honors society. I love to watch and go to IU sporting events; Track, basketball, football, soccer, and baseball. I found somebody to hang out with in the CIP program, which was Stacy. We love going to IU sporting events and watching Glee, Kitchen Nightmares, and The Big Bang Theory.”

“I’m focusing on becoming more independent academically. I’m working on a technical certificate in business administration at Ivy Tech, and I’m graduating in May 2014. I’ve been an intern at the District Ten Pro Bono Project for over a year now; I really like it there. District Ten is a non-profit organization that provides legal services to people who can’t afford them, so I really feel like I’m helping out in the community. I’m a Student Ambassador and a Student Senator at CIP, and I like talking to prospective students and their families at Open Houses. I’m working on staying in shape, working out three times a week and trying to eat healthier.”

“I am finally graduating this semester from Ivy Tech with an Associates degree in Early Childhood Education. Working with children and families as an assistant preschool teacher has been a goal and a dream of mine from a long time--through the support of CIP I have grown into a more capable and confident young woman. Life has obstacles, sometimes from your own doing, sometimes not, but the most important thing is to keep moving forward.”

“When I came to CIP, I didn’t think I’d have any friends, but I really hit it off with my roommate Julia. We get along well most of the time, and living with a roommate has helped me work on my patience, as well. I take classes at Ivy Tech, and it was difficult at first to go to class independently, but I worked hard and had good support from Mendy--now I routinely go on my own. I want a degree in psychology and criminal justice. The big things I need to work on are stress management and increasing my physical and mental stamina, so those are my goals right now.”

“I like the staff here; they are awesome. My CIP experience has been a learning one, I wouldn’t change anything about my time here.”

“I really like the class I'm taking, American History II, covering the Civil War to the modern day. Since I've been here it's been difficult trying to adjust to having a full schedule, dealing with a strict budget, and trying to understand social thinking for the first time. I started volunteering at the Bike Project. I like to repair bikes, and it's a great way to meet people. It was lonely coming here at first, but I've started making friends.”

“At CIP, my focus is on increasing my independence and making a career in early childhood education. I started volunteering with the YMCA adaptive swim program when I first came to CIP because I’m really into swimming, including being in the IU Swim Club. When I worked with the kids in the water, they weren’t afraid of the water because they trusted me and listened to me. That’s how I realized I liked to work with kids and was good at it. I’ve had seven different internships working with young children while I have been at CIP, and I am looking forward to making a career in early childhood education. Working with little kids is a perfect fit for me.”

“I've lived in Bloomington for a year and a half, in that time I worked at Macri's, went to IU Speech Therapy, and attended classes at Ivy Tech. I'm currently looking for paid work. I've had a few interviews, and I'm working on my interview skills. With my interests consisting of films, comics, and reading and writing, my life's goal is to become a big-time filmmaker--to stand side-by-side with well known directors. Maybe even be nominated for an Oscar. It's a goal I've had since my last years of high school, and I have no intentions of letting go of those goals.”

Students in Transition

Page 16: CIP Bloomington Yearbook 2012-2013

“Although it pains me to leave, I'm aware that this is a transitional program. Part of life is moving onto bigger and better things. I want to see what the rest of the world has in store. I've trained my service dog, I have a great group of friends, I have a job now, I'm comfortable around town... I think that I've done what I came here to do.”

“Here at CIP, I have focused on a career track in C-Step and internships. I have had many internships, at the library, at Bloomingfoods, at fitness centers, and at Hilltop Garden Center. I’ve been able to learn a lot of different skills and explore jobs through my internships. I also really like wellness classes with Susy because wellness is very important to me, and I like chatting with her about staying in shape through exercise and healthy food. I’ve been able to explore my artistic side as well through art classes at CIP and the local art center and working on animation and photography, as well as taking piano lessons.”

Taking in the Good The guiding principle followed by the Clinical Department at CIP Bloomington is the simple yet powerful statement, "Taking in the Good." This means the more we recognize the "good" in our lives the more we start thinking about ourselves in a positive way. We focus on guiding and supporting students to identify the good in their lives and look for ways to generalize positive thinking, routines, and habits that lead to positive outcomes. Students are introduced to the concept of mindful thinking and meditation as a way of strengthening positive thoughts and paying less attention to negative thinking. This creates resiliency in the way students go about tackling the tough times in their lives. Deep breathing exercises and self-soothing imagery are also techniques used to assist in their efforts to "calm the worried brain." Through cognitive behavioral principles students examine their automatic ways of thinking and explore new ways of thinking and behaving. The ultimate goal of Clinical Services is to help students acquire a "toolbox" with useful ways of thinking and behaving that will support their efforts to acknowledge the good in their lives and tackle the challenges that occur daily.
