With “building a vibrant sense of community” as one of our core values, Cincinnati Hills

Christian Academy’s goal is to bring people to this school for a great education and let

them discover that there’s a great fellowship of loving, faithful, encouraging people to

be had here as well. In this way, we’re saying that CHCA is not just about the student –

it’s about the whole family.

A lot of places talk about building community, but at CHCA, you can see it in action.

Families gather to share dinner together at the Homecoming picnic, students from

every building converge on the middle school grounds to enjoy the fun of Fall Festival,

high school students take time to serve and make connections at EBL Elementary and

Armleder, and of course, there are the myriad sports parents that do more than just

attend games – they travel together, share meals, root with each other, and support

their coaches and athletes. This October, I had the honor of attending Armleder’s 10

year anniversary celebration, and it was such a treat to see students, teachers, staff

members from a variety of capacities, principals from all four buildings, and donors who invested in the Armleder

mission gathered together to commemorate this milestone. The joy was infectious. I love to see these various groups

banding together like a family despite differences in viewpoints, ages and backgrounds – it’s a clear demonstration

of how the love of Christ unites us.

This is just the kind of community that our founders dreamed of over 20 years ago. Two decades later, as we look

around our campuses and see the fellowship, beautiful buildings, talented faculty and one-of-a-kind programming,

it’s important that we recognize it’s now our turn to keep the tradition alive. People had

a vision and were generous in order to make it a reality. I hope everyone in the CHCA

community will support our Gift of Giving annual campaign, a way for us to be generous

toward the CHCA mission’s two most important pieces: our teachers and students.

In a world that overemphasizes independence and encourages isolation, I’m glad that

CHCA places real value in community. It’s thanks to families who came here ten, fifteen,

even twenty years ago that this is our school’s culture. My hope is that those who come

after this current generation of school families will find us equally faithful.

Since coming to CHCA 14 years ago, I have led five trips to this country.

And in the same way that the beauty and power of the Holy Land

changed my life as a senior in high school, I have seen everyone from

students to administrators catch the same excitement.

This June I took a 10-day trip to Israel (plus an optional three-day trip

to neighboring Jordan) with a group of 25 students, parents, alumni

and administrators. The trip was for some a final “field trip” for the

senior honors elective course I taught fall semester called “Israel in

the modern world.” We visited key sites that we’d read about in James

Michener’s The Source like Megiddo, Tiberius, Acco and Sfat. We spent

a day in the town of Ibillin, site of the school and university started

by Archbishop Elias Chacour, which we’d read about in his book

Blood Brothers. For those students, the countless classroom debates

about history, religion and the prospect of peace between Israelis and

Palestinians came alive in a way books and lectures could not recreate.

We realized firsthand that this situation is more complex than news

accounts and sound bites allow.

The Trip of A LifetimeMy role as principal involves many duties, responsibilities and opportunities, but of all the things I do here, nothing brings me more joy than sharing my passion for the land, history and people of Israel.

For others, this trip was a chance to see the world

of the Bible come alive in new ways. Geographical

place names that we typically skim over as we read

the Scriptures became meaningful references. A

subtle but powerful shift happens as the traveler

begins to experience the fact that biblical places—

the Sea of Galilee, the Judean Wilderness, the town of

Bethlehem, the city of Jerusalem—are real in physical,

tangible ways. Most of us never fully realize that we

have relegated the world of the Bible to a kind of

fairyland of make believe. Passing highway signs with

recognizable names, over and over people say, “I can’t

believe we’re here!”

For many travelers, this truly was a pilgrimage with

memorable experiences at every turn: we sat on the

Hill of Beatitudes and read Matthew 5 together. We

sailed on the Sea of Galilee. Some were baptized in

the Jordan River. We visited Caesarea and looked

out over the Mediterranean, thinking about Paul’s

imprisonment and Peter’s sharing with Cornelius.

We saw the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth

and quieted ourselves in the grotto in the Church of

the Nativity in Bethlehem. We overlooked the city of

Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives and walked down

the Palm Sunday road, stopping to pray and hear

Scripture in the Garden of Gethsemane. We prayed at

the Western Wall and walked the Temple Mount. We

shared communion together in the peaceful site of

the Garden Tomb. Amidst the chaos of buses, tourists,

vendors, traffic and modern Israeli life, we enjoyed

profound moments that enlivened our faith and

opened our hearts to new possibilities.

A portion of our group stayed for the Jordan experience.

For all of us—me included—this was a first. We saw Mt.

Nebo from where Moses looked over the land of Israel

and the regions of biblical Ammon, Moab, and Edom.

We hiked through the natural and Nabatean wonders

of Petra. We spent a night in modern Amman and

visited the ancient Roman city of Jerash, the

most well-preserved Roman city in the east

and part of the biblical Decapolis. Because

of its stable political climate and abundant

historical sites, Jordan is truly a place to see!

Every time I travel to Israel I am changed, and

always come home thinking about when

I will return. Even now I’m thinking about

taking the next CHCA group to experience a

trip of a lifetime – stay tuned!

When Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy opened the Otto Armleder Memorial Education Center in

August 2000, no one knew what the future would hold. What they did know was that the school,

brought to life by months of fervent prayer, diligent planning and gifts from dozens of families and

businesses, was a gift from God to the city of Cincinnati. Those who worked to make the Armleder

vision a reality could see the potential to impact generations of urban families with Christ-centered,

academically excellent education – God’s light in the heart of the city.

This October, students, teachers, staff, families, donors and friends gathered on Armleder’s

playground to celebrate ten years of exactly that: hearts changed by the love of Christ, minds

broadened by challenging academics, talents discovered in art class, choir practice and football

practice. “Ten years ago, 92 students joined 25 faculty and staff members from different backgrounds and

experiences, with different expectations of what Armleder was going to be,” says Armleder Principal Susan

Miller. “Today, we’re a family. We support one another in times of crisis, celebrate achievements and blessings,

look after each other, serve one another and choose to do life together. I believe that’s what God had in mind

when He came up with the idea for Armleder years ago and planted it in the hearts and minds of the people

who made it happen.”

After a program of song, prayer, heartfelt words from art teacher Gail Varner and

readings from student essay winners, everyone shared a picnic lunch. Varner, who has

taught at Armleder since it opened 10 years ago, conveyed how thankful she is to be

part of the school. “I pray regularly to God and tell Him ‘Thank you for Armleder and

thank you for choosing me to here,’” she said. “Being able to intentionally plan lessons

that teach about God and handle situations with students using Biblical principles

is such a blessing. Our school is God’s school and our teachers, students and families

were chosen by Him. He is present each and every day. I’m so thankful to have been

here the past ten years and look forward to many more great years to come.”

What Armleder means to meby Hannah Begashaw, 4th grade

I love Armleder because it’s an honest school. Also because it helps us get ready for college. The staff are the nicest people ever and it helps me have a better relationship with God.

Armleder does everything they can to get me to have good grades. Good grades mean there is a higher chance for me to go to college. Every day I walk through these doors and right there someone

greets me. Now that’s what I call nice! And what makes this school special is how they teach me about God and how he is omnipotent (which means God is all-powerful). Thanks to Armleder

I have a better relationship with God. Those are my three fabulous things about Armleder.

Historic school,historic building

Today, the building at 140 West 9th Street downtown is home to teachers, staff and students who come each day for lessons in everything from the alphabet to ecosystems. But years ago, the people who walked through the doors of the historic Crosley Square building were there for an entirely different purpose: news, stardom and the world’s most infamous talk show.

1942: The building, a former Elks Lodge, becomes

home to WLW-AM, the 50,000-watt radio station heard by

listeners coast to coast.

1948: Cincinnati’s first television station, WLWT

(Channel 5), begins airing shows like Ruth Lyons’

The 50/50 Club and Midwestern Hayride from Crosley

Square. On any given day, the hallways were crowded

with guests including Doris Day, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball,

Tony Bennett, Jerry Lewis, Ronald Reagan, and Cincinnati

native Roy Rogers (plus his horse, Trigger).

1957: WLWT begins broadcasting programs in color,

earning Cincinnati the nickname “Colortown, U.S.A.”

1991-92: Former Cincinnati mayor and Channel 5

news anchor Jerry Springer airs the first season of The Jerry

Springer Show from the building. The show later moved to

studios in Chicago.

1999: WLWT vacates Crosley Square for its new home

in nearby Mt. Auburn.

2000: The building is remodeled and the Otto

Armleder Memorial Education Center is opened.

What Armleder means to meby Raven Hines, 8th grade

Armleder is a fun loving community. It is a place where you don’t have to be worried about people judging you for your thoughts and ideas even if they are different. Armleder is a place where everyone’s ideas are valued. I have attended Armleder for ten years. Throughout the years that I have been here I have not only experienced spiritual and intellectual growth, I have witnessed this growth in my fellow classmates too.

One of the things I love about Armleder is that the staff genuinely care about their students. They want nothing but the best for us. They want to see us succeed in every aspect of our lives. You never feel like you are alone at Armleder because you have your friends and teachers, Mrs. Miller and the rest of the staff walking alongside of you. We are a community that lives according to Psalm 133 which says it is “good and pleasant when brothers live together in unity!” Armleder is like a family that cares, guides and loves each other.

I hope to go onto a prestigious college one day, perhaps even Harvard Business School. Armleder has given me a solid foundation. The world is open and available to me. Armleder has helped me walk with the Lord. I have learned that he is with me in everything I do. I am so thankful for Armleder and what it has brought to my life. The expectations set for me here will help me excel into my future. I am glad I am here to be a part of Armleder’s tenth anniversary celebration.

Of the books I’ve read recently, my favorite has been Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. This was really a wonderful read – the teacher never stopped teaching, and the student never stopped learning. They truly had a special bond and friendship. The book is a wonderful lesson on living and the impact you may have on another person. Morrie had a truly positive outlook on life which inspired me.

Head of SchoolTo Change the World by James Hunter is a game changer for Christians. We have often made erroneous assumptions about how and why to change the world for Christ, and this book reveals how culture is shaped and how historically Christians have often come to find themselves following rather than leading. I want our students to learn to shape the culture they will inherit, and this book gives us some great insights as to how that might happen.

5th & 6th grade language arts & social studies teacher at Otto Armleder SchoolThe Help by Kathryn Stockett deals with an aspect of southern life in the pre-Civil Rights era that is often overlooked: the relationships between white women of privilege and their maids. Written as historical fiction, the story is told from the perspectives of two maids and one woman whose mother employs a maid. The dynamics of the relationships and the courage that it takes for the characters to forge against societal constraints as they start a movement are dealt with using humor and grace.

2nd grade teacher at Edyth B. Lindner ElementaryI first read Mindset by Carol Dweck, PhD., a year ago for a master’s class and have re-read it several times since. It explains the difference between a fixed mindset (in which a person believes their talents and abilities are already decided) and a growth mindset (in which a person believes they can change and develop). The book has been

helpful to me both professionally and personally. I would highly recommend it to parents who are interested in their children’s overall growth and well-being.

Theatre Manager/ Technical DirectorThe Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett intrigued me because one of its main characters is a 12th century mason whose life’s ambition is to be master builder for a new cathedral. In those days if you were lucky enough to get this job you were employed for life. Since I am a mason’s son and a 3rd generation mason myself, I loved it! Follett is an impeccable storyteller and weaves the lives of many different characters from different backgrounds and social status together with ease. Not only is the story exciting and suspenseful, but it is also on the money as far as the history of the building techniques used in those days.

Geometry teacher at Martha S. Lindner High SchoolThe Book Thief by Markus Zusak is written from death’s viewpoint, and it fits in the historical fiction category, so there was something to learn from many perspectives. I liked it because of the humanness in the story and how I came to love the characters, even the grumpy foster mother. It’s a story of poverty and struggles, but the girl finds freedom in books. I think we all need to find something that brings us that same sense of freedom (and stability)!

Social studies teacher at CHCA Middle School

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of my heroes so reading Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas was enlightening. As a history buff, I also enjoyed the great background of events surrounding the 1900s in Europe, the U.S. and rest of the world. Metaxas examines how these circumstances influenced Bonhoeffer’s faith and activism during World War II. My favorite quote: “Christianity preaches the infinite worth of that which is seemingly worthless and the infinite

worthlessness of that which is seemingly so valued.”

We asked our faculty and staff what they’re reading in their free time – that is, when they’re not teaching, grading papers, planning lessons, guiding staff, answering phones, setting up lighting cues, managing the school’s computer network, and molding young minds. Here’s what they said – and don’t worry, there won’t be a test.

Kindergarten Prep teacher & Director of Eagles Landing Program at EBL Elementary

The book and small group study Love & War by John and Stasi Eldredge allowed my husband and I to understand one another and communicate better. We have a stronger marriage as a result of this book and the work that went along with it. We both laughed and cried. It’s a book that

every married couple should read…and every engaged couple should explore. I love real stories written by real people, so I also enjoyed How to Cook a Tapir: a Memoir of Belize by Joan Fry. I love reading about people daring enough to do the things I’m too chicken to do, like Fry did when she, as a 20 year old, lived her first year of marriage deep in the heart of the rainforest of British Honduras (now known as Belize). It was great to just relax and enjoy stepping into someone else’s shoes.

Latin teacher at MSL High SchoolManhunt by James L. Swanson is a very dramatic account of the conspiracy to kill President Lincoln, the vice president and top cabinet members. The events of the day are vividly recreated, as is the ensuing manhunt which ultimately resulted in the death of John Wilkes Booth and the capture and trial of the other central conspirators. Some of those who aided and abetted the conspirators met interestingly different fates. The book made the events come alive, and filled in a lot that I didn’t know. You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy this book.

Director of Information Technology for CHCACrazy Love by Francis Chan raises some interesting thoughts about how and why we live out our faith. You can’t help but re-evaluate why you do (or don’t do) some of the things you do (or don’t do.) The book humbles you where you fall short, but also challenges you with ways to strengthen your relationship with God.

7th & 8th grade math & science teacher at Otto Armleder SchoolI’m a big fan of the Elm Creek Quilts novels by Jennifer Chiaverini. I love to sew, and these books about a group of quilters, their families and their friendships are always an enjoyable and even inspiring read. It always makes me want to start a new quilt or join a women’s circle of some sort.

English teacher at MSL High School[Fellow MSL HS English teacher] Michelle Barron recommended The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery to me, and I’m glad she did. First, the book is intensely well-written and works as a sort of primer of philosophy while functioning as an entertaining novel. Its premise is dark without entering morbidity and uncompromising without using cliché. Not only is the story itself fascinating, but the characters Barbery creates feel anything but contrived. One of her protagonists bewails the ills of the bourgeoisie while quoting Tolstoy, a combination worthy of anyone’s attention. If you’re looking for a read that will entertain, enlighten, and captivate, The Elegance of the Hedgehog is a step in the right direction.

I also have to recommend The French Laundry Cookbook by Thomas Keller. This summer I did a free internship at a restaurant just to learn about the industry, and was introduced to the cooking styles of Thomas

Keller (who is quite possibly the best chef in the United States). This is a cookbook that is to be read from start to finish, focusing on slow food, meals that take days to prepare but whose flavors will linger in one’s memory for weeks. If you’re serious about food and about cooking, Keller’s resource is an essential read.

Christian studies and ethics teacher at MSL High SchoolReading the Bible in the Strange World of Medicine is an excellent discussion by theologian and ethicist Allen Verhey on how Scripture relates to the world of medicine and bioethics. Verhey carefully addresses the important role Scripture plays within the Christian community in shaping our overarching worldview and how this worldview informs and guides complex decisions about our human lives and bodies. The author also points out the dangers of Christians acting in “bad faith” when misusing and misappropriating Scripture.

Another good one: in Prayers for a Privileged People, renowned Old Testament theologian Walter Brueggemann offers rich, deeply informed prayers reflecting the difficult tension we face as individuals living in a place of privilege amidst a world of overwhelming

needs. Brueggemann provocatively and passionately encourages us to yield ourselves to God’s gracious work in bringing about peace, justice and righteousness.

Technology teacher at Otto Armleder School

Stones into Schools by Greg Mortenson (author of Three Cups of Tea) is the incredible story about how a promise to a small village in Pakistan turned into a huge effort to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It showed how a common goal can bring people together to overcome

great difficulties and achieve something almost unbelievable. Not only did Mortenson make a difference through the building of schools, he had an impact on the thinking of American military and Congressional leaders about the people of those two countries.

Assistant Principal at CHCA Middle School

This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection by Carol Burnett was such a fun autobiography! I laughed out loud as I read the on- and off-stage escapades of Ms. Burnett and her co-stars. The stories are from a time when comedy relied on funny skits, not degrading someone else. Ms.

Burnett’s positive outlook on life is reinforced by her ability to find humor in a myriad of mundane daily activities. As a middle school administrator, I talk to lots of parents who want to know how to bring up children of character and common sense in a world that lacks those things. I like to recommend The Blessings of a Skinned Knee: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Self-Reliant Children by Wendy Mogel and Nurture Shock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. These books are must-reads for every educator, parent, grandparent and any person involved in the rearing of children. They contain good advice, backed by research that speaks to our indulgent society.

2nd grade teacher at Otto Armleder SchoolReading with Meaning by Debbie Miller is one of my favorite books to read. I’ve read it three times and each time find something new and exciting to apply in my own teaching. It walks you through reading comprehension and why it’s important, plus fun, practical ways to teach reading and build a successful reading community. A must-read for the start of the school year!

chca from my perspective

by Stel Kirbabas, CHCA parent

My oldest son Alec is 19, a 2009

graduate of CHCA, and currently

a sophomore at the University of

Cincinnati. He lives near campus

in the fraternity he joined as a

freshman, so we usually only see

him when he needs money or

the washer in his fraternity is on

the fritz. His recent weekend visit

was due to the latter, and while I

don’t know what sparked it, I was gifted today

with a rare, heartfelt conversation with my son.

The topic was CHCA.

Alec was a very typical CHCA student,

participating in everything from sports to fine

arts to outreach work. The part he didn’t seem

too interested in was the academics, which

did not sit well with his father and me. Oh, the

lectures I gave that kid over the years about his

grades. Quarter after quarter, year after year we

had the same conversation with our son as he

continued to bring home Bs and Cs. In truth, we

kept him at CHCA because he was surrounded

by other Christian families who treated him as

their own and we had the comfort of knowing

the teachers and staff truly loved him. As far

as CHCA being able to make a difference for

him academically, we did not hold out hope. I

am embarrassed to admit that based on his

performance at CHCA, we expected our son to

show up on our doorstep by his second quarter,

admitting he flunked out of UC.

Fast forward one year and four months: our

son is carrying a 3.2 GPA in UC’s tough College

of Business while working a part time job and

serving as his fraternity’s head of fundraising.

He is standing in front of me, sharing that he got

a 90% on his Foundations of Applied Calculus

test and a 100% on last week’s Economics test.

I listen with gladness in my heart and a growing

sense of amazement as he says to me (and I

quote), “Oh my gosh, mom, I am so glad you and

dad sent me to CHCA because I learned so much

stuff from my teachers and am so far ahead of

the other students in my classes. I was thinking

to myself that if I had just tried a little harder in

Mr. Vanderkolk’s AP Econ class and had actually

taken the exam, I wouldn’t have

to work so hard now. I never

even took Calc in high school but

learning all the other basics from

the math teachers is helping me

get an A.” I start to say “If you’d

only listened to me back then,

you could have saved us all a lot

of heartache!” but before I can

get the words out, he adds, “I wish

I could tell the high school kids

to listen to their parents and the

teachers but they won’t, mom.

You have to be in college before

you really get it. It’s just part of

being a kid.”

As I look at my son in this

moment on a beautiful Saturday

in late October, my perspective

about what CHCA can offer

academically has changed. He

really was prepared for college,

and has the As and Bs to prove

it. I have heard that

testimony for years

from other students,

but it just goes to

show – even parents

can hear something

again and again and

not understand until

we experience it for

ourselves.

9

a decade older, a decade wiser

With apologies to the other classes and their reunions, this summer’s

Class of 2000 ten year reunion was likely the biggest and best one the

school has seen. I may be a little biased (I am a 2000 grad, after all) but

with over 75 people in attendance and a full day of activities, the classes

that follow will need to try hard to top it. (Class of 2001, your move.) It

had the hallmarks of your typical reunion – stories exchanged about

the tornado of 1998, about pranks and jokes played on teachers and

each other, about dances and class trips. But thanks to thoughtful

planning by organizers Casey (Sutherly) Purnhagen, Ryan Betscher and

Joe Ashbrook, it was so much more than typical.

The afternoon portion took place at the high school – we were treated to “class” with each other

that reminded us of the old days, encouraged talk about the present, and looked ahead to the

future. Then there was chapel time, complete with worship music by alumni, a special message

from Dr. Nicholas, a riveting testimony shared by Jenn (Reynolds) Schmidt and prayer. Later that

evening, we gathered again at Montgomery Inn for dinner with teachers and administrators

past and present including Spanish teacher Cherie Bailey, principal Dr. Joan Miracle, assistant

principal Earl Edmonds, biology teacher Jack Bailey and football coach Cliff Hern.

CHCA Alumni Relations Coordinator Tracy Wolcott was impressed by the turnout and spirit of the gathering. “This

class had such great ideas and really made it a day to remember,” Wolcott says. “Reunions are tough to plan – as an

organizer, you never know how many people will attend or what they’ll want to do, and as an attendee you wonder if

it will be easy to talk to people you haven’t seen for a decade. But this group had a great time. It’s always a joy to see

this class get together.”

by Liz Bronson ’00

High school was hard for me, so needless to say, the thought of returning for a ten-year reunion brought up feelings of insecurity I’d much rather forget. As the day got closer, I became preoccupied with having a really impressive answer to the question, “what have you done in the last ten years?” My honest answer (which I am normally perfectly content with) – mother of two,

stay-at-home mom, wife, etc. – now seemed completely ordinary in light of what I imagined my friends saying. It was in this that God showed me: it’s not about what I have made of myself in the last ten years; it’s about what God has made of himself through me.

Once God delivered the Israelites from Egypt he told them again and again to remember what He had done and remember the greatness of the one who set them free. My high school

years were characterized by a few kinds of slavery: to the opinions of others, to my moral performances, to my need for approval. But looking back on my time at CHCA, I see the hand of a loving God pursuing me into a relationship with Him, ultimately delivering me from my captivity. Just like the Israelites, I have found God to be faithful time

and time again. Once I graduated I became a believer, putting my trust in Christ. It was then that my “coming out of Egypt” story began.

Deuteronomy 8:2-5 talks about how, once delivered from captivity, the Israelites wandered the desert covered by God’s protection, provision and discipline. These verses are the perfect description of the past ten years for me: God has spent the time leading me and causing me to hunger, then feeding me from His own hand. After one year of studying theater – my passion – in college, I felt God leading me to Bible college. Gone was the thing I loved so much and found my identity in, but God used this to test me and drive me to have a deeper trust in Him. Then, after a year of marriage, my husband got a job offer in Colorado. We moved away from my family (something I said I would never do), causing me to hunger – yet God provided for me again. And once I became a mother, all my attempts at “having it together” were dashed and all my weaknesses exposed. Again God fed me. Each time he has reminded me of the sufficiency of my Savior and allowed me to rest there.

So when I look back on CHCA, I see the beginning of my journey with God. I came to this school brokenhearted and running from God, and left with the knowledge that He loves me and wants me to experience the freedom that comes from knowing Christ. And while these past ten years have had their share of challenges, hunger, swollen feet, confusion and tears, I have seen a God patiently pursuing me again and again. Sometimes it takes a high school reunion to remember that it’s not just about where we were, but where God has brought us.

CHCA’s annual campaign supports our two most important groups: students and teachers.

We hope you’ll lend us a hand by making a donation – you can even choose where you want to direct your gift: teacher support (classroom tools, professional

development, salary increases and stipends), tuition assistance, or wherever the need is greatest.

Send in your gift by December 31 to take advantage of a 2010 tax deduction.

My wife Wendy and I have two

high school students – Tanner (a

junior) and Caroline (a freshman),

but memories from our early

years at CHCA are still fresh in my

mind: our interview to enroll Tan-

ner in kindergarten, Caroline per-

forming with Melody Makers, the

Bigger-Better socials, listening to

our kids as they shared their ex-

periences on the Mexico mission

trips. We are so grateful to the

Lord for a place that weaves to-

gether the values of Christ, excel-

lent academics, service and other

rich opportunities that help our

kids discover their gifts and pas-

sions. As a passionate believer

in CHCA’s mission, I have found it

truly rewarding to serve on the Board of Trustees for

the past five years. I know many folks wonder what

the Board does, so here’s a glimpse of some of the

most meaningful work I have been a part over the

past five years.

One of our roles as a Board is to ensure we have ter-

rific leadership in place to “run CHCA.” We have an

outstanding team who carries out the mission of

CHCA with excellence, and I can easily say that some

of the biggest blessings during my Board service

have been working alongside Randy Brunk, Dean

Nicholas, Rob Hall, Sandy Breitholle, Susan Miller and

others, strengthening relationships, praying and en-

couraging.

Another role the Board undertakes is ensuring the

school grows and progresses in ways that support

the vision, mission and values of the school. Every-

thing we do at CHCA centers on academic excellence

in a Christ-centered environment, where we desire

all students to develop a lifelong passion to learn,

lead and serve. As a Board, we now benchmark all

decisions and plans for the future against our spe-

cific vision, mission and values to ensure CHCA stays

on the right track toward what God has called us to

be.

The Board has also worked relentlessly with our

executive staff to make CHCA as excellent a value

as possible for our families while also competitively

compensating our faculty. This has always been the

Board’s heartfelt desire (especially through the dif-

ficult economic downturn of the past few years) and

I am excited to share that CHCA is in sound financial

health for which we are entirely grateful.

Other highlights over the years include commis-

sioning the plan to develop CHCA’s SoaringStart

Preschool (which is now thriving and successful),

making new investments in our enrollment and ad-

missions efforts (which have resulted in waiting lists

at EBL Elementary), and initiating the annual All-

School Praise and Worship Celebration which has

united the hearts and voices of Armleder and North

Campus families for the past two years.

The people who comprise the Board of Trustees

are parents, alumni, coaches, volunteers – they’re

in your classrooms, in your prayer groups, working

at CHCA events and serving your children. They are

passionate, faithful, dedicated people who seek to

serve God and the whole CHCA community. Our

prayer is that the seeds planted at this great school

enable our students not only to succeed in higher

education but also to make a difference in the world

for the kingdom of God.

Committee,

I am pleased

to report that

BKD, LLP, our

independent

auditors, issued a ‘clean’ opinion regarding

CHCA’s financial statements for the year

ending June 30, 2010. This clean opinion

signifies the auditor’s belief that our

financial statements accurately represent

the financial position of CHCA. Portions of

the financial statements are included on

Mike Wallace nominated for cfo of the Year

This summer, CHCA Chief Financial Officer Mike Wallace was nominated for a Business Courier

2010 CFO of the Year award. Though he lost to James Bowersox (CFO of Life Enriching

Communities) in the Small Nonprofit category, the integrity and financial transparency that

Wallace has brought to CHCA makes him a winner every year.

The Courier asked Wallace, who has led CHCA’s Business Office for over eight years, about

his workplace philosophy. “It’s important not to focus just on the accounting and finance

aspects of my job,” he said. “Our school motto is ‘Learn, Lead and Serve,’ and I try to echo

that by learning as much as I can about CHCA so I can contribute in all areas; as a leader,

surrounding myself with good people and letting them do their job; and serving the school

by maintaining the high standards and ethics that have made this institution successful.”

Wallace also commented on the unique challenge of being a CFO at a Christian school. “Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy has allowed

me to take all I have learned in the business world and apply it in a Christ-centered environment,” he said. “Seeing Jesus at work every day

changes you for the better.”
