CILASS: Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences Information literacy network The Information Literacy Network is an interdisciplinary special interest group created with the purpose of bringing together in new and exciting ways key stakeholders in information literacy at the University of Sheffield under the CILASS umbrella. The Network is chaired by Professor Sheila Corrall from the Department of Information Studies and co-ordinated in partnership with the Library. It draws upon the strong research and teaching interest in information literacy in the Department, as well as on a range of initiatives in the Library, which has been instrumental in developing resources to support information literacy, in particular an online "information skills" WebCT tutorial. Information literacy is a key theme of CILASS activity, as we identify the development of information literacy capabilities as fundamental to the success of inquiry-led curricula. Through an inquiry-based learning (IBL) approach, it will introduce students to some of the basic techniques of inquiry and modes of scholarly communication in the discipline: •Students will conduct a real, small- scale research exercise to investigate the origins and conceptions of the discipline, and some of its key problems and issues. •Using the latest technologies for creating and sharing knowledge - such as blogs and mindmapping tools - and the flexible, technology-rich learning facilities of CILASS, they will interact with postgraduate students, researchers, consultants and practitioners to explore their views and gain practice of working and functioning within a collaborative group within in their field. •At the close of the module, each group will draw the results of their inquiry together to present a poster as part of an internal student research conference. Information literacy audit This project aims to develop an inquiry-based learning approach to integration and progression of Information Literacy in the Department of Information Studies both at programme and module level. The CILASS LDRA (Information Literacy) and Postgraduate students from the “Information Literacy Research” module interviewed module leaders from all the Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes in the department to ascertain the extent of Information Literacy teaching in the department. The results from these interviews have been analysed and a report submitted to the Department. Library CILASS Department of Information Studies Information Literacy Network • CILASS at the University of Sheffield is a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, • CILASS has initiated a far-reaching learning and teaching development programme which aims to exploit the synergies between collaborative inquiry, information literacy and networked learning in new and innovative ways. • CILASS seeks to exploit the close relationship between IBL and information literacy in that the development of IL skills and competencies in students participating in IBL is central to its success. • Close collaboration between academic information scientists with specialist interests in information literacy, librarians, core CILASS staff and academic staff working on discipline-based IBL projects is a key feature of CILASS strategy. • Three CILASS funded projects are being taken forward in the Department of Information Studies: Objectives of the Information Literacy Network • Inform the development of an inquiry- based pedagogy for IL teaching. • Organise a programme of events to raise awareness of and promote IL to academic staff • Build a bank of resources to aid in the development of IL teaching in the University. • Encourage the sharing of good practice in IL development across the disciplines. • Act as the key coordinator for IL development at the University, including feeding into the University’s Learning Teaching and Assessment Strategy. • Draw upon the strong research base (Sheila Webber, Professor Sheila Corrall) in the Department of Information Studies. Inquiry in Information Management This is a new Level 1 module created with the aim to embed IBL strategically from Level 1 upwards in the degree programme. 1. Carry out an audit of IL teaching and map it against the SCONUL 7 pillars model 2. Identify curriculum areas where there are gaps in IL development 3. Identify areas where the pedagogic approach to IL education could be improved 4. Devise new IL learning and teaching activities CILASS in partnership with the Department of Information Studies • The Academic Director of CILASS is seconded from the Department of Information Studies and still maintains close links with colleagues and continues to have input into the “Inquiry in Information Management” project. • Incoming Head of Department, Professor Sheila Corrall, as chair of the Information Literacy Network, is fully committed to supporting CILASS in the Department. She is committed to developing the learning and teaching of information literacy informed by the IL audit project. • CILASS Learning Development and Research Associates, both for Information Literacy and Networked Learning are supporting IBL projects within the department. • The CILASS strategic focus on Information Literacy to support Inquiry-based Learning benefits from a close working relationship with an internationally renowned researcher in the field of Information Literacy. • Postgraduate students from the Department have been given the opportunity to conduct research for CILASS for the purposes of their dissertation. In 2006 one student on the MA Librarianship programme is investigating innovative learning spaces to inform CILASS space development. • The CILASS LDRA (Information Literacy) is contributing the ongoing development of a level one Undergraduate information literacy module. • Postgraduate students studying on the ‘Information Literacy Research’ module will again have the opportunity to engage in CILASS research projects. • The closer partnership working between the Department of Information Studies, CILASS and the Library will inform and develop a more holistic approach to embedding information literacy to support IBL in the curriculum at the University of Sheffield and contribute to the strategic development of both IL and IBL.
