Victor Hugo has participated actively as amember of local FMLN youth organizations thatcombine theoretical studies in politics andeconomy with local volunteer service projects
in poor communities. In January of 2011, healso began to study in a private high schoolwith a strong pre-architectural focus. To doso he must live with relatives in San Salvadorduring the week, returning home to Santa Ana
on weekends.
During the same time, Alex’s struggle withrheumatoid arthritis has increasingly limitedhis ability physically to accompany people inhard to reach marginal communities. But theelectoral successes of the FMLN in Santa Ana
has meant that a local government with a clearvision to benefit the poor has tapped Alex asa valued resource, giving him the opportunityto use his skills as a pastor, peace maker/negotiator and community organizer within the
structures of “city hall,” where he is an ac-tive member of the local government.
Since 2003, Iglesia Bautisa Shekina, whereRuth serves as pastor, has grown in size andvision, from a small group of worshippers ina rented store front, to a vital community ofadults, youth and children who have purchased
land, built a church and then added a largeparcel to the church property with a visionfor a community center to serve all of theirneighborhood. Already, they have begun to of-fer programs on that new property. In addi-tion to her service as a pastor for Shekina,Ruth has served as a volunteer professor in theextension program of SEBLA, a local seminary. She also coordinates the logistics and programarrangements for Cielo Azul’s new El Salvador
study trips, which bring North Americans toEl Salvador to learn first hand about the po-litical, economic and theological realities oflife in the third world. (Download a prospec-tus for the Study trips at our blog
