learn italianThe Italian Club of Dallas is offering Parole Italiane a beginners course of Italian language: the language of Arts, Music, Love and the pleasure of Living. It will be conducted by native Italians very knowledgeable of uses, customs and mode of living of modern Italians.

The classes will be light on grammar and heavy on practical conversation: especially valuable to those planning to visit Italy. Seven adult classes will be conducted every Tuesday beginning February 9 and through March 22. Currently, there are 14 students signed up for the course. If you wish to sign up and there are no slots available, you can ask to be put on the waiting list at the Club or put yourself on the waiting list on Eventbrite, in case of a cancellation. The class size will be limited and the cost will be $150 members and $200 for non-members.

super bowl 2016On Sunday, February 7, we will again be hosting Super Bowl at the Clubhouse! Come join in the festivities and watch the game with your friends on the big screen TV.

Sausage and pepper sandwiches, and meatball sandwiches will be available for sale, along with, of course, beer, wine and soft drinks. Bring your friends rather than have a mess at home and bring your own favorite tailgate foods along to share, if youd like.

Brush up on your knowledge of Super Bowl trivia, so youre ready to win a trivia game prize. Or just come on in and watch the half-time show. And its always fun to take a poll on which commercial is the best!

Come watch the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos at the 50th anniversary Super Bowl! Time TBD; watch your Clubmail for details.

here coMes the Fourth liMoncello sMacKdown!

Our Third Annual Limoncello Smackdown saw the beginning of a new reign as Barbie Gumin was crowned the new Queen Lemonhead, after Lynn Barnards two year reign. The challenge has been called! Our last three competitions were tons of fun, with laughter, tastings, and serious judging. Think you have the best Limoncello? Come join us for our Fourth Limoncello Smackdown after Cena on Friday, February 26, when we will once again have a competition to determine who has the best.

In the interest of providing a level playing field for the tasting, we ask that all entrants be clear lemon-based liqueurs (no crema/creams or orange, mango, etc. well save those for another contest!). Also, Melissa is providing a standard bottle for each entrant so that the tasting is truly blind. Please contact Melissa and obtain your bottle before the contest at (972) 931-9167 or [email protected]!

What will you win, should your Limoncello be judged the best? The accolades of your ICD friends, the right to say your liqueur is the best, and the title of King or Queen Lemonhead. What more could you want?

Please let Melissa Partin, [email protected], know if youd like to enter your Limoncello in the Smackdown. It promises to be a fun night for all!

An American of Italian descent once said, The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual. I could not agree more, especially as it applies to our Italian Club of Dallas.

On Friday, January 22, 2016, the Club began the long overdue task of recognizing and thanking the fine people who do so much, day in and day out. It started by thanking the 2015 President and Board of Directors and concluded by recognizing the individuals who worked The House, those members who work the facility, kitchen, or both. Proudly the Cena was packed and a splendid time was had by us all. I want to personally thank everyone who attended.

But wait, theres more! Gathering up the names of our volunteers seemed to grow and grow. So many committees, so many great people. It quickly became evident that there would not be enough time to properly thank everyone who gives back to our Club. After some quick Board discussion, it was agreed that we would have our Appreciation Cena once every quarter. That would give us more opportunities to properly mention everyone and give us the proper time for introductions and accolades.

The awards given at the first Appreciation Cena were actually donated by a member who wishes to remain anonymous. I asked that if any other member or business would like to sponsor future awards, they were welcome to do so. I immediately received an offer by two of our members to underwrite the awards for the second quarter. That means there is an opportunity to sponsor the awards for two additional Cene. You can remain anonymous or you can get the fanfare. Either way, you or your company is assisting the Club.

When you see a volunteer, give them a pat on the back and offer your own thank you. By giving a little of their time, our Club continues to survive. If you would like to lend a hand one day, you can find Barbie or Francesca or check in with any of the Board members. We will gladly accept your help on any level. The team we have is the team we need, and it is of champion quality.

So in closing, Ill say that we have lots planned for and lots to do in 2016 and we look forward to enjoying many events, new and old, at the Italian Club of Dallas. Oh, and that American of Italian descent I quoted earlier? It was Vince Lombardi.

    Grazie e saluti a tutti!

  • February wine FeatureWelcome back wine lovers! For our next installment of the monthly wine feature, we are headed to Verona, the Northeastern Italian region that produces Amarone di Valpolicella. While many of you have surely tasted Amarone, many of you might be interested to learn that traditional Amarone is a blend of three grapes indigenous to the region.

The traditional blend consists of Corvina (usually 60% - 65%), the neutral grape Rondinella, and the tart tasting Molinara. Some of the best representations of this style include these three grapes. A couple of months ago, I introduced a wine that many of you have enjoyed at the club, called Scaia, from Tenuta Sant Antonio. The wine is made by four brothers, Armando, Massimo, Paolo, and Tiziano Castagneti. The four brothers love for wine began in their fathers vineyards in San Zeno di Colognola ai Colli in the Valpolicella district. It is 100% Corvina that is aged in stainless steel. This wine is very expressive in both aromatics and flavor with flowery notes of red rose and sweet violet and fruity hints of wild black cherry, plum and red raspberry. With bright acidity and a 13% ABV, it is balanced and elegant.

Scaia is a wonderful food wine, and is exceptional paired with salty cheeses. Although many of you have enjoyed this wine, I would encourage you to revisit it next time youre in, and if you havent tried it, please pick up a bottle on your next visit. This a wonderful wine to introduce to friends, and now that you have a little knowledge about what it is, theyll be impressed with your knowledge as well!

I hope that our members are enjoying these monthly wine features, and I love getting feedback so please feel free to make suggestions!

February booK club newsJoin the Book Club on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, for a discussion of A Thousand Days in Venice: An Unexpected Romance by Marlena de Blasi. Well meet at 7:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse. A Thousand Days is de Blasis first in a series of memoirs about her life in Italy. Her journey begins with a trip to Venice, a city which she had visited annually as a traveling chef. To her surprise, she meets a stranger named Fernando, who professes to have fallen deeply in love with her the year before during her last visit to Venice, when he first saw her from afar in a piazza. At first, she attempts to discourage Fernandos

overtures. But before long, de Blasi finds herself quitting her job back in America, saying goodbye to friends and family, including her grown sons, and moving to Venice to marry Fernando. Her memoir describes the frustrations and joys of making a new home in the glittering city of Venice, and along the way allows us to vicariously enjoy the beauty and marvelous foods of this jewel by the lagoon.

la beFana Fills childrens stocKings at the italian club

What a wonderful gathering of families welcomed La Befana to the Italian Club on Saturday, January 9. For those not familiar with this Italian legend, La Befana was busy sweeping when the three Magi stopped to ask if she knew where the Baby Jesus might be as they followed the star in seeking him. They asked if she would like to accompany them on their search, but she refused because she had a lot of cleaning and work to do. After they left, La Befana changed her mind and decided to join them in finding the infant. She never did find them and to this day she searches all the households in Italy still seeking the Baby King and leaving gifts for each good child just in case one of them is the Christ Child. This year she found many children at the Italian Club waiting for her, and La Befana left each child a stocking full of goodies while they were sleeping. The children participated in a re-enactment of the legend in an improvised skit, and Shanna Miletta played our Befana.

After the luncheon of lentil with sausage soup, pasta, and salad menu for New Year and Epiphany, everyone participated in the ceremonial slicing of the King Cake or rather La Befana Cake - for this festive day. Somewhere baked in the traditional Italian sweet bread was a lucky fava bean just waiting to be found. Sara Burkett, Russells daughter, found the bean in her piece of bread and was crowned the Queen of Epiphany!

About 25 people took part in the party celebrating this legend. Everyone enjoyed the gathering and resolved to meet again for other family and children-oriented parties at the Italian Club. Carrie and Maria want to especially thank the DiCarlo family at Jimmys Grocery for their generous donation of food and Italian treats for the childrens parties in December and January.

i piccoli colorichildren enjoying italian dancing Does your child like to dance? Would you like your child to have fun while learning Italian dances and sharing them with audiences throughout Texas?

If your answer is yes, then I Piccoli Colori the Italian Club of Dallas childrens Italian traditional dance group is for your family. Children five years old and up learn traditional Italian dances from the 20 regions of Italy from Piemonte, Lombardia, Friuli Venezia Giulia and regions in the north through Lazio and regions in central Italy to Campania, Calabria, Puglia, and regions in the south and islands of Ischia, Sicilia, and even Sardegna.

I Piccoli Colori perform in typical costumes of two regions of Italy and plans for additional regions are planned. Families provide the childrens shoes, and we provide the costumes, including zoccoli shoes custom made for us in Italy for our Zoccolitanz dance.

Our children experience camaraderie and the fun of attending festivals and traveling by dancing in performances throughout the year including the Italian Clubs Festa Italia; local schools, libraries, and festivals; Plano International Festival, the State Fair of Texas, Westfest in West, and the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio the second weekend in June.

No prior dance experience is required. Maria Chobany, assisted by Carrie Harris, teaches the dances, and older children from 12 years of age on up learn additional dances from the adults repertoire.

I Piccoli Colori classes are on Saturday mornings from 10:30 a.m. at the Italian Club of Dallas. We try to accommodate childrens other activities like soccer, etc., by working with children as they can attend.
