The Situation with Syria
• Civil war between rebels (terrorists?) and the government
• Been going on for several years• Reached a boiling point when (apparently)
chemical weapons used
Why no UN?
• Russia has veto power• China is vetoing too• Russia and Syria are trading partners• Russia has repeatedly vetoed attempts of
using the UN
More Stuff
• China and Syria are also trading partners, and Iran is on Syria’s side
• Great Britain voted down involvement• The “rebels” may be working with some
groups that we would call terrorists.
US Options
• Congress approves tomahawk cruise missile strike, Obama authorizes
• Congress votes down cruise missile strike, Obama uses executive order
• Congress votes down missile strike, and the US doesn’t get involved.
• **Obama has said no troops on the ground. We really don’t want to remove Assad
Based off of what we’ve talked about, what’s being said here?
What is this saying? Which would kind of lead to which one being the “better” choice
To close…
• What should we do? Boils down to this. If people are being killed by a regime, is it our job to intervene or not?
• Discuss
Monday
• Gun Control: Recall in Colorado• Key Question: Should gun control be
increased?
Recall vote in Colorado
What is a recall?
• People get petitions signed• Election prior to the ending of someone’s term• It is a way of eliminating people from office for
egregious votes that are not illegal actions that would disqualify someone from service
State Senators’ John Morse and Angela Giron
What did they do?
• Voted in favor of universal background checks and limiting the size of magazine clips
• In response to the mass shooting in Aurora
• Similar things passed in Maryland, New York, and other states, but Colorado is different.
Answer…
• Do you agree with the recall?
• Do you agree with what the two voted for?
• You can say Yes to both, and No to both. Procedure versus Policy

Sobering statistics…
• Based on survey data from the U.S. Department of Justice, roughly 5,340,000 violent crimes were committed in the United States during 2008.
• Based on survey data from a 2000 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year
• At the current homicide rate, roughly one in every 240 Americans will be murdered.
• Right to personal protection (close to a million a year) or is it part of the problem?
Wednesday
• One interesting headline.• Political Cartoon Analysis• Please record the topics and thoughts
associated with each cartoon.
• Essential Skill-Analyze political cartoons for message, symbols, and context
Man guilty of “tricking” girlfriend into abortion
• Told her it was antibiotics• Charged under the Unborn Victim of Violence
Act, which would carry mandatory life sentence.
• Pled guilty so he could get 13 years instead of life.
• Too short, too long?• What if it was reversed?
Why?
• Taxation• Rules• Health Care mandate
• Agree/Disagree?
Stuff…
• Obama won Nobel Prize in 2009• Missiles aimed at Syria• Contradiction?
• People working multiple jobs• Irony…Labor Day was about the rights and
celebration of the Labor movement and workers
• A recovery where we have to work multiple jobs…is it a recovery?
What we talked about yesterday…
Ouch…
• Message: We are more concerned with salacious stuff than the plight of people in Syria
• No oversight on those spying on us.• 4th amendment- Right to be secure in your
possessions, papers, belongings from unreasonable searches and seizures without a warrant
Ouch!
Pope Francis
• Argentinian• All about the poor• Called out Obama over Syria• Called out EVERYONE over refugees from Syria• Though conservative, has shown to be flexible
on gay issues.
A striking contrast… but misleading too.
