s

welcome

Lets build something

togetherspringw

Its March, and just as winter wipes the slate clean, spring signals a fresh start and the chance for renewal. Some of you may already be returning to outdoor projects, while others remain interior-focused for the next few weeks. Either way, in this issue we bring you great ideas to meet the seasonal slide head-on with clever and budget-friendly ways to reuse found space, both inside and out. Read about two organized pantries, plus a bedroom coffee bar that puts your morning java within an arms reach. Youll also find a stylish cabana (here for poolside, but imagine other uses!), and a fishermans garage for the angler in your family. Jump-start your landscape planning by taking cues from two neighboring backyardsthe owners chose different solutions to suit different needs. As we look ahead to spring, we also look at where weve been. In 2008, Creative Ideas celebrates 10 years of delivering inspirational projects for your home and outdoor spaces. So thank you, readers, for helping us achieve a decade of creative ideas!

what agr eat e idea!Planter VaseBring an outdoor pot inside for a dramatic display.1. Select a planter that suitsthe size of your arrangement. For example, use a petite pot for small delicate flowers. 2. Arrange fresh-cut flowers, and add water as needed.

Finial Flair1. Hang the frame onthe wall using the appropriate hardware. 2. Drill a pilot hole in the wall using a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw for the finial (#27969; #30495). Screw the finial into the wall. 3. Drape a length of ball chain (#231241), found in the hardware department, over the finial, allowing it to hang behind the frame. 4. Use tape or a glue gun to secure the chain to the back of the frame.

Get the classic look of suspended artwork.

Good To KnowIf your planter has a drainage hole without a plug, fill the hole with waterproof caulk before adding flowers and water.

WHAT A GRE AT IDE A!

Catch rainwater to use in your yard for irrigation and conserve dollars too.

Rain Chain

1. For an 8- to 9-foot rainchain, you will need about /4 -inch soft copper 40 feet of 1 tubing for large rings and 15 feet for small rings. (The tubing can be found in the plumbing department.) To create the rings, wrap the tubing around a soup can (for large rings) and a spice container (for small rings). Cut the tubing with pruning shears, working the pieces back and forth until they separate. Save 1 foot of the tubing to be used later. 2. Link the large rings into pairs, and join each pair with a small ring as shown. 3. Remove your downspout. Shape the 1-foot piece of tubing, and then place it in the gap as shown below. Secure the rain chain to the tubing. 4. Place a container underneath the chain to catch rainwater, and use the collected water to irrigate your garden.

T ack I t On1. Select a mirror with awooden frame (#239797). Place the mirror on a flat work surface with its packaging underneath to absorb the impact from hammering the nails. 2. Lightly sketch a design on the frame using a pencil. 3. Apply spray paint to the white nails (#58198); we used pink, yellow, aqua, and green. Allow to dry. 4. Cover nails with a spare cloth, and use needle-nose pliers to hold each nail steady. Gently tap the nails into the frame using

Dress up a simple mirror with upholstery nails.a tack hammer, following the sketched design. Tip: Start with each flower center, insert the surrounding nails, and then add the vine. 5. If you need to touch up nail heads, spray paint into a disposable cup, and apply with a small brush. Wipe the frame clean, and then hang the mirror using appropriate fasteners for your wall type.

Good To KnowInstead of spray-painting the upholstery nails, you can select one of the many finishes of nails available to enhance your mirror.

UNWIND & DE SIGN

Chalkboard PotsGood To KnowIf you make chalkboard paint with tile grout, you can mix in drops of black chalkboard paint to create darker shades that will add detail and dimension.

What better way to usher in the month of March than by hosting an Unwind & Design party for friends and preparing pots for spring plantings. Chalkboard paint makes a remarkable canvas that allows you to label pots with the names of your favorite plants and seeds. We even show you how to create your own chalkboard paint in various colors. Let this project help you and your friends venture into the garden and relish in the rising temperatures.Watch a step-by-step video demonstration and find tips on planning a project party at LowesCreativeIdeas.com/ UnwindAndDesign. Also, go online in April for another Unwind & Design project, wooden serving trays.

S TEP - BY- S TEPStep 1: Go online to download and print the design templates for the labels. Next, cut out the design of your choice. Temporarily attach it to the pot using tape. Trace the pattern with a pencil, and then remove it. Step 2: To make customcolored chalkboard paint, pour 1 cup of satin latex paint into a container. Then add 2 tablespoons of white unsanded tile grout. Using a paint stick, mix thoroughly. If the mixture becomes too thick to brush on, add a tablespoon of water, and mix again. Coffee BarLowes List

Perk UpEase into the morning rush with a clever coffee bar.Who needs room servicewhen you can wake up to a fresh pot of French roast just steps from your own bed? This homeowner longed for a touch of the hotel luxury that she enjoys on business trips. She also wanted to start her days on a relaxed, yet upbeat, note. The solution: a coffee bar in her bedroom to put that first cup within pouring distance. To build the coffee bar, a 26- by 65-inch piece of plywood was attached to one 24-inch and one 15-inch base cabinet using corner braces. To create open shelving on the left side of the bar, the cabinet door was removed, and a 20- by 22-inch shelf, cut from the same sheet of plywood, was attached with corner braces. A 24-inch space between the cabinets allows room for a small refrigerator.

Good To KnowThe countertop was made from -inch plywood. A Lowes employee can cut the lumber for you.

A day spent by the shore has the power to restore our well-being. Beyond the salty air and soothing sounds of the surf, the muted seaside colors give us a sense of relaxation. This years spring palette takes inspiration from natural elements, as well as from the weathering effects that salt and sun have on brighter shades. These colors are perfect for outdoor living spaces; they also create a fresh and comfortable vibe indoors. Neutrals, from warm white to subtle yellow to dusty taupe, reflect the many shades of sand. An array of cool, refreshing greens and bluessuch as soft silver, light turquoise, and seaweed greencan provide the casual feel of a coastal cottage. The whitewashed character of this seasons palette makes it approachable and fitting for any home.

Behind Closedyour pantry? Like most busy homeowners, you probably stash everything possible, from cereal boxes to cleaning products, behind the closed doors. But if these items lack a designated home, it might be time for an organizational overhaul. Our two pantry makeovers show you how well-planned spaces, whether large or small, can be packed with purpose.

For a family that loves to entertain, a walk-in closet transforms into a customized pantry that perfectly suits the homeowners needs.

Because the kitchen sink is near the pantry, the homeowners added a second dishwasher. Other appliance options include a wine chiller or small refrigerator. 4. Laminate flooring, which withstands heavy traffic, spills, and messes, matches the existing hardwood floor in the kitchen. 5. The homeowners created the narrow shelves for personalized storage of wine and other items.

OS T Y LING BY TR AC Y SISSON

n warm summer days, this family loves nothing more than inviting friends over for a splash in the pool. They wanted an outdoor room that would accommodate guests without the need for them to enter the main house with wet feet and clothes. The sun-lovers started planning in spring to have the new space ready in time for summer fun. They transformed a ready-to-assemble cedar shed kit into a compact cabana that packs function into every inch. Although the interior measures just 8 by 12 feet, smart design allows for a small kitchen, a curtained changing area, and plenty of creative storage. Surfaces such as a laminate countertop and canvas fabrics can withstand hot weather and dripped water. Take inspiration from this shed project, and then create your own personalized room fit for any purpose.

Two base cabinets conceal a pullout trash bin, silverware, and other kitchen necessities. A small refrigerator placed below the countertop holds snacks and drinks. The homeowners painted the wooden floor of the shed in a tan-and-white diamond pattern to add visual punch.

BEFORE

2. To serve as a curtain, a drop cloth painted with colorful stripes conceals

the changing area. The homeowners included amenities such as soft lighting, a laundry hamper, and a door mirror. 3. A divider made from peg-board panels separates the kitchen and changing area. To boost storage space, movable peg hooks create spots for hanging pool gear, towels, small kitchen tools, and other necessities. 4. The laminate countertop, which mimics the look of travertine, is durable and easy to maintain.

Finishing Touches1. A waterproof, freestanding deck box next to the pool provides storage for inflatable rafts, floats, and more. 2. The homeowners landscaped around the cabana with colorful flowering shrubs and solar-powered path lights. The window boxes, which come with the cedar shed kit, were painted a soft green and filled with yellow lantana and pink petunias. The owners also added exterior shutters to the shed.

Outdoor entertaining is a breeze now that we have everything within arms reach.Lowes List

Cool OasisLow-maintenance landscaping and a custom-made canopy create a comfortable spot in the shade.

This neighbors home lacked easy access from the inside to the backyard. By replacing a window with French doors and adding a pergola with a canopy to provide relief from the sun, the outdoors became more inviting. A durable deck, a painted concrete terrace, and dining furniture combine to make a place where the homeowners can truly relax. Trees and shrubs add softness, punches of color, and the promise of more shade to come as the landscape matures.

Accessible Style1. Durable furniture from the Herringtoncollection provides an outdoor dining area. 2. A pergola built with treated lumber and Trex decking around the columns architecturally defines the space. The concrete pad was covered with gray paint to coordinate with the deck. 3. The canopy is made from weatherresistant Sunbrella fabric, which can be ordered from Lowes through the millwork department. 4. Japanese maples and faux bamboo torches add to the modern design. Uplights illuminate the trees at night. 5. A set of French doors installed at the back of the house makes the yard more convenient from the inside.

La PuenteCalifornia

This Month:

Tech SavvyAfter a computer lab at Sparks Middle School in La Puente, California, was vandalized in early 2006, students, parents, and faculty needed help to rebuild it. The Lowes Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) surprised Principal Sherri Franson by awarding Sparks with a grant of $100,000 to renovate the lab. The school now has new state-of-the-art computer equipment that will help students gain the skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly technological world. Without Lowes leadership and financial commitment to our students, this project would not have happened, Franson says. The donation allowed for the old lab to be repaired and restocked with 10 desktop computers. In addition, a second computer lab was created in the school. The new lab includes 30 laptops with wireless capabilities and six desktop computers. New software

has enabled the school to offer courses such as graphic design, Web design and development, and even video production. This lab configuration will let our students express their creativity and build confidence, says Franson. The new lab also has a SMART Board, a device that projects computer images onto a white board, allowing

teachers to display information directly from the Internet during lessons. The Lowes grant has allowed for SMART Boards to be added in every other classroom throughout the school as well. To protect the new equipment from damage and theft, alarms and motion detectors also were installed. Franson intends for the entire community to benefit from the lab. It also serves as an after-school Internet cafe, during which parents have access to the lab, and child care is available in the new parent resource room. Computer classes are available in the lab to help educate parents in technology. In 2007 alone, LCEF gave more than $15 million in grants to public schools and diverse nonprofit Principal Sherri Franson (left) and Teri Thomas, administrative organizations across the manager of the Lowes store in San Dimas, California, enjoy a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the schools new computer labs.
