Govt. to tap solar energyTo bring down the dependencyon conventional fuels such asdiesel the central government isplanning to use solar energy forrunning over two lakh mobilephone towers in the country.According to the new andrenewable energy ministerFarooq Abdullah There are a

number of mobile towers in thecountry and we want to cutdown the use of diesel inrunning them. And it will beimplementated in consultationwith the telecom ministry. Hea d d e d t h a t w i t h n e wtechnologies which allowsstorage of solar energy collectedduring day time to be used innight, it was much easier to

replace diesel for running themobile towers. As per the officialrecords there are around 2.5 lakhmobile towers in the countrywhich run on diesel.

    Solar heating systemsmandatory in Faridabad

With the Haryana governmentstepping up the campaign formaximum use of solar energy inFaridabad, it is now compulsoryto set up solar water headingsystems on houses which arebuilt on plots the size of 500square yard and more. Apart

    from homes, the rule applies tom u l t i - s t o r e y b u i l d i n g s ,hospitals, hotels, institutes,tourist complexes, motels andsome government buildings too.T h e g o v e r n m e n t a l s oannounced that houses comingup on 500 square yard plot sizeswould not get completioncertificates unless solar waterheating systems were installedthere. As if to set a precedent, thecivic body of the city has decidedto replace about 33,000 streetlights with energy-efficientlights soon.

Abu Dhabi plans largestsolar power plant

Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber, chiefe xe cut ive and manag ingdirector of Masdar, recentlyannounced in Abu Dhabi thatthe company would tie up withFrench Total and Spains'sAbengoa Solar to built theworld's largest concentrated

solar power plant, 75 miles fromthe city.Masdar , a wholly-ownedsubsidiary of Abu Dhabi'sMubadala investment company, will join hands with twoEuropean companies, Total andAbengoa Solar, in spending US$600 million on the plant. Thesolar plant, to be owned jointlyby Masdar (60 per cent) and 20per cent each by the twoEuropean firms, will sell powerto the national grid, with thegovernment subsidising thestate electricity company.

Designed by RAFA firm headquartered in Zurich,

Switzerland, it is called "Solar City Tower, this structurewas chosen in response to the initial proposal and it hasthe potential to generate enough energy not only for theOlympic city, but also for part of the city of Rio.The challenge was to design a vertical structure on theisland of Cotonduba that in addition to serving as anobservation tower would become a symbol of welcometo newcomers in Rio either by sea or by air once it hasbeen host city of 2016 Olympic Games. Its design makes it stores solar energy during the daythanks to signs at ground level, while the surplus energy

produced is piped to pump sea water within tower givingthe effect of a waterfall outside. This water is reusedsimultaneously by turbines which are designed toproduce energy during the nightThese characteristics give it the epithet tower generatorwhich is intended as a continuation of some of theresolutions taken during the Earth Summit UnitedNations in 1992 that took place in Rio and also promotesthe use of natural resources in energy among thesepeople.

The tower also has an amphitheater, anauditorium, cafeteria and shops accessible on theground floor where you can take an elevator thatleads to various observatories and a retractable

platform for the practice of bungee. At the top ofthe tower, it will be possible to appreciate thescenery around the island where she will be

erected and its waterfall will become a benchmarkfor 2016 and the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Gas produced from theanaerobic digestion of wastecould be meeting 10% of theUK's energy needs within the

next ten yearsThis is the claim of the trade bodyrepresenting the industry, whichargues its potential is beingmassively underused in the UK atthe moment. Anaerobic digestion isa mature technology, wi ththousands of facilities up andrunning in European countries witha better track record at dealing withwaste, but currently there are only

30 or so plants operating in the UK.

The Anaerobic Digestion andBiogas Association (ADBA) isarguing that the UK must catch upwith its European cousins and thatthe technology will play animportant role in the future ofBritain's gas, electricity and heatsupply. Lord Redesdale, ExecutiveChairman of ADBA, will claim"Britain will fail to meet itsrenewable energy targets withoutrapid building of a nationwideanaerobic digestion infrastructure."

    A D B A p r e d i c t s f a r m e r s ,commercial operators and localauthorities will build a thousand ADplants in the next five years at a costof 5 billion, mostly funded by theprivate sector, with the aim togenerate gas worth 1.7 billion per

    year.

Biogas must play bigger role in meeting energy needs

American Coalition for Ethanol Conference Concludes :The four-day conference agenda featured a wide range of targeted breakout sessions plus two general sessions.Individual sessions covered such topics as:w Innovations to Improve Efficiency & Profitw USDA Programs for Ethanol Producersw OSHA & Ethanol in 2010w Impact of Current & Future Air Quality Regulations on Ethanol Producers

Jay O'Neil, Senior Agricultural Economist at Kansas State University, delivered a fact-filled presentation about the

true economic realities of corn growing and ethanol production that dispels a great number of negativemisconceptions about ethanol. Perhaps the single most significant detail revealed by Jay is that in a $4.00 retail box

of corn flakes that there is only 6 cents worth of corn. Therefore, adding ammunition to the World Bank food vs. fuel

retraction, it's obvious that even if there was a large rise in the cost of corn (for any reason) that there are actually

other factors that made food prices soar.

These new plants could meet twothirds of Britain's renewable energytargets by 2020.

Anaerobic digestion, which isalready widely implemented in EU

countries such as Germany and inthe water industry in the UK, usesmicro-organisms to break downagricultural and household waste toproduce methane gas, which canthen be converted into electricity orheat or injected directly into the gasor electricity grids.

ABDA believes the industry willemploy 20,000 - 40,000 peopleproducing up to 20% of Britain's

domestic gas supply. LordRedesdale, chairman of ADBA said:"At a time when the cost andsecurity of our gas supply is in

jeopardy, when there is so muchpublic support for renewable

technologies, and when we do notlook like we are going to hit ourrenewable and recycling targets, it issurprising that anaerobic digestionis not one of our top priorities. "ADwill convert waste into power, withthe added benefit that the residue isa fertiliser that can be put back onthe land."
