Callaway County Senior CenterThe Callaway County Senior Center’s mission is to provide a community of services, activities and programs which support seniors. We welcome and encourage participation from the entire community in support of our mission.

The Callaway County Senior Center works with The United Way, Central Missouri Area Agency on Aging (CMAAA), local business and organizations to raise the funds necessary to provide programs for senior citizens of Callaway County. Volunteers and CMAAA staff provide daily meals, support fund raising events and whatever is needed in a community effort to enhance the lives of senior citizens.

The Callaway Senior Center serves a hot lunch buffet, soup & salad bar from 11:00AM—12:30PM, Monday thru Friday. Suggested lunch contribution for ages 60 or over is $4.00, under age 60 is $6.50. Frozen meals are available for delivery to homebound senior citizens age 60+.

We host a variety of activities such as senior

exercise, bingo, card games, dinners, dances,

entertainment events, pool tournaments,

educational programs, etc. Most activities are

free of charge or require a very nominal fee.

The CMAAA Care Coordination Program

provides supportive services to help seniors

live independently in their own homes. Priority

is given to frail or low income individuals who

are facing nursing home placement. While the

Care Coordination Program primarily serves

senior citizens, it also serves fulltime family

caregivers. A Care Coordinator with conduct

a home visit and formal assessment to identify

needs and a plan of care. There is no charge for

the assistance of a Care Coordinator, though

donations are accepted to help expand this

service to others.

Here’s something you “CAN” do to help The Callaway Senior Center! Some of you may know that we’ve been collecting aluminum cans for several years and use the

proceeds to help cover the cost of some of our activities.

A container labeled “CANS” is placed in the dining room for your convenience. Flattening is appreciated, but not required. Tabs are given to Ronald McDonald

House to help defray the cost of their utility bills.

Check with other family members, friends, and neighbors to see if they can help us recycle. Do your

part to help the senior center and the environment….it’s a win-win situation!

Much ado and to do in March this yearMarch is traditionally the month of shamrocks and green clothing, but did you know there are other interesting holiday recognitions on the 2020 calendar? In addition to St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 and the National Irish American Month to celebrate for those of us with a fair amount of Irish blood, how about these designations?

There are literally thousands of holidays, special events and observances -- more than one for every day of the year. New holidays are being created on a very frequent basis.

For instance, I didn’t know this before, but in 1993, Congress declared March as National Irish American Heritage Month. How do the Irish among us celebrate it?

Staying with a green theme, how about National Celery Month? Could Connie ?????? and the Senior Center kitchen staff have something up their sleeves?

In addition to celery, March is also National Frozen Food Month and National Peanut Month. Any dishes mixing celery, peanuts and frozen foods? None that I am aware of, but …

To combine all those things on the food front, it is also National Nutrition Month. Anyone with New Year’s resolutions along those lines still being followed?

Perhaps most important to a little more than half of the population, March is National Women’s History Month. It is a time dedicated to learning about and discussing the unique and historic contributions of the feminine gender to our culture, society and nation.

Two other important groups are nationally cited this month: Social Workers Month and Red Cross Month. Shout out to Center Director April Redman and my wife, Aging Best Information and Assistance Specialist Karen Elwood!

Still not done. Switching from food, history, ethnicity, service groups and gender, the arts get a shout-out with Music in our Schools Month and National Crafts Month. Plenty of ways Senior Center members can participate in the latter!

In the month named for the Roman god of war, Mars, there is a two-week celebration for Bubble Week (I have no idea?!) and another for National Crochet Week!

New and Better Ways to Plan for Long-Term CareDo you have a long-term care plan? Retirement plan? Do your parents? Siblings? These are all questions each of us should be considering - here’s why.

Almost 70% of the population after the age of 65 can expect to need long-term care. Women, on average, need almost 4 years of care, and men just over 2.

Long-Term Care planning is not considered enough amongst our population. In fact, for most, it isn’t until we are at the brink of needing immediate long-term care (whether it be for ourselves or for someone we love) that we start to plan. Last minute planning is not the most effective way to plan for something this important and this expensive.

What is “Long-Term Care”?

Long-Term Care (LTC) is a variety of services and support that someone needs to meet their personal care needs. Long-term care provides assistance with basic tasks of everyday living, such as: eating, dressing, bathing, using the bathroom, and moving from point A to point B. This isn’t medical care, this is basic daily living.

Long-Term Care is a part of retirement planning, and despite common assumption, it is not covered by medicare.

How much does it cost?

The national average cost of a private room in a nursing home facility averages around $80,000-$100,000 per year. Home-health care, a scenario in which someone comes directly to your residence to provide basic care services, can cost $50,000 a year.

On average, any given individual needing Long-Term Care would require service for 3 years. That’s a total that could range anywhere around $150,000 to $300,000, depending on the type of care that is necessary, and where you live. And, if you and your spouse need care, double that number. The bottom line is, this is no small expense.

How the market is changing:

In traditional LTC policies, the policyholder pays a monthly premium to the insurance company and in exchange, the insurance company would pay for all or part of long-term care services if needed.

Traditional long-term care policies were the only option for a long time. In fact, in the 90’s, there were over 100 insurancers selling policies, but in recent years, has reduced to just 15. The number of policyholders with traditional policies hasn’t moved either- despite the increase in population of 55 and older (those who would actually need to use long-term care services). The common problems with traditional policies is that the expensive premiums can be raised by the insurance companies discretion, qualifications for LTC is difficult, and there are no death benefits to your policy- you either use it for long-term care or you lose it completely.

Adam Moeller, a 15 year licensed fiduciary and advisor of long-term care, says there are two issues that can disrupt a retirement plan. One, the stock market declining while having too much money at risk. Two, failing to plan for long-term care expenses. But he reassures, despite past traditional options for LTC planning, there are new strategies that are popping up to mitigate both of those risks and plan ahead of time.
