I used to wear matching socks…every day. Not only did each sock match its
partner, but together they matched my pants. I was a stickler about this. Uptight even.
Black pants meant black socks. Grey pants meant grey socks. Khaki pants meant khaki
socks. Matching socks, starched shirt, shined shoes were all part of my daily routine.
I live my life in the public eye and in representation of others so I always wanted to look
presentable.
However, these days my matching socks are growing harder and harder to find.
What happened? In short, my kids started helping with the laundry. What used to be a
painstakingly precise operation of my wife in the sorting of our family laundry has become
a haphazard and jumbled function of my four color-blind children. They mean well and
you can hardly fault them for their muddled sock separation abilities (bless their hearts).
After all…black, brown, grey, blue…these are practically indistinguishable in the sock
color spectrum.
On more than one Sunday I have noticed that after arriving at Northside, I was
wearing one black and one brown sock or one blue and one charcoal sock. In times past I
would have called my wife to bring me new socks and rectify the situation. “I can’t stand
in front of the congregation looking like a moron who got dressed in the dark!” I’m telling
you I was borderline neurotic.
Things are different now. Lately when that happens, I just shake my head and
smile, “I can live with it.” You see, I’m learning a lot about mistakes from a man named
Peter, who himself made quite a few mistakes. He once said, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (I Peter 4:8)
Love allows for mistakes to be made. Love gives grace and extends forgiveness.
Love lets go of unreasonable expectations. Love keeps things in proper perspective.
Love keeps priorities in line. Love doesn’t sweat the small stuff. Love will endure
embarrassment rather than cause hurt feelings. Love believes the best. Love doesn’t
assume the worst.
As our church grows, the demand and need for love’s covering will only grow as
well. The next time someone leaves you with non-matching socks (or whatever your
personal pet peeve might be) just smile, let love cover it and say, “I can live with it.”
See You Sunday,
Luther

The Great Commission and May Missions
As you will read in Matthew 28:19-20, the first part of the Great Commission is GO! Work day at the Baptist Center last month was a blast! Our group cleaned and painted a fire escape, painted a couple sets of shelves, painted yellow safety stripes on the steps and had an absolute ball hanging out and working together. We have even more places to go and people to serve in May! We’ll kick it off with a missions meeting at 5pm on May 5 in the Fellowship Hall. Upcoming events that we would love to have you join us include:
May 1-5: Thunder Beach. Want to join me prayer walking the venues? May 2, June 6: (first Thursday of each month): Serving supper at the PC Rescue Mission from 4 - 6:00pm. Try it just once! You’ll be blessed! May 5 at 5pm. Missions meeting in Fellowship Hall, primarily to organize the Bethel Village retreat. May 17-19: Women of Bethel Village beach retreat at Laguna Beach Christian retreat. We’ll be providing breakfast on the 18th and snacks for their evening movie. June 1: Baptist Center block party prep. Pass out flyers in neighborhood. June 8: Baptist Center block party! October: Oaxaca, Mexico mission trip.
Why not give missions a try? It could be something as simple as doing a breakfast casserole for the Bethel Village Retreat or lending a hand at the Baptist Center block party. Want to go wander around the scary biker people at Thunder Beach and pray for them without them suspecting a thing? Give me a call! I’ll protect you, I promise! You might even discover you like those shady scooter types… Don’t hesitate to contact me with potential projects, ideas, questions or concerns at [email protected] or give me a call at 819-9106. We need your input to reach the needy with our very best efforts.
