The Rector’s Ramblings

Happy New Year everybody and a happy Epiphanytide.

Another year has passed. Another year of recognising our journey of faith. Another opportunity to recognise our continuing conversion

as we come closer to God.Another year where we deepen our spirituality and faith in

prayer and study.Do you feel that you have achieved any or all of the above?

I sincerely hope that the answer is ‘yes!’ What is our individual and collective New Year resolution? And what part does God have to play in them?

Epiphany reminds us of the journey, the wise men travelled many miles following their science and the hope that God would provide answers and they were rewarded.

Our own journey should begin with prayer and expectation. We look to the words of scripture, inspired by God {The word inspiration comes by way of Vulgate Latin and the King James English translations of the Greek word θεοπνευστος (theopneustos, literally, "God-breathed")} As we try to understand our study; either by reading other guides and commentaries or by asking questions of others – maybe by being a member of our Bible study group, we come to the realisation that, like the wise men we journey continuously through our lives.

As we move into the New Year we should acknowledge the changes that are coming about in the church at large but more especially within the Church of England over the next 5 years. There are painful decisions to make but these can be offset by a positive outlook and a willingness to set ourselves mission goals so that if, in future, we do have to look at some of the changes being

proposed by the Diocese (no tablets of stone yet) the parish is in a good position to move forward. By working together in stewardship and mission we begin to look outward and we need to listen to God through our prayer. To this end I shall be looking at setting up a prayer hour at the end of one morning so that parishioners can join me in praying just for our parish and for God’s work which needs to be carried out by every one of us.

The Holy Spirit inspires us to look at our own spiritual journey, helps us to see our personal star and guides us individually and as a church community to walk in his footsteps. We don’t know where we are going and by joining forces we will get that guidance and the star will shine ever brighter as we look to our parish’s future. I ask you all to join with me in praying for the Parish of Hoole, the villages and especially ourselves and our friends in the various congregations of our church. We need to be aware of our own spiritual needs as well as others and we seek the power of the Holy Spirit in helping us to come together as an outward looking mission based community.

Finally when the Stewardship campaign of ‘time, talents and mission’ starts to roll please support the team in any activities that will spread the Good News of Christ’s love for us and bring people to him in a meaningful relationship. Mission and any funds needed for that work will follow on.

As a church family we look to share what we have been given by God.Your brother pilgrim,DerekPastoral Assistant Training

During the past twelve months I have been training to become a Pastoral Assistant. I have been enjoying this experience – Derek is an excellent teacher and the PCC very supportive. I consider myself to be very fortunate to be part of St Michael and All Angels.

The main focus of my training has been encompassed within Baptism services and individual family preparation for Baptism. Once Rev Derek has finalised the Baptism dates with individual families, I arrange to visit the families in their homes. At

4

Page 5: Church Officers - Much Hoole€¦  · Web viewWe look to the words of scripture, inspired by God {The word inspiration comes by way of Vulgate Latin and the King James English translations

first I went with Derek, but since May 2013 I have been visiting the families as the church representative, I show them a Baptismal DVD and we have a friendly chat. This is followed on by a pre Baptismal family visit to the church, in which I assist Revd Derek as he discusses the issues surrounding Baptism. The two pre Baptism meetings with the families encourage a good rapport between family and church while fostering a deeper understanding of the commitment made during Baptism. As trainee Pastoral Assistant I have been part of 32 Baptisms this year and I have enjoyed every one.

I have been with Revd Derek to visit people who are ill in hospital, care homes or their own homes, and have been with him when he has taken Communion to people who are not able to attend church regularly. I consider it to be an honour and a privilege to give a person Communion in their own home, and under Rev Derek’s guidance I have given Communion to people in this situation.

Since April 2013 I have led the Bible study group, and once a month I help Rev Derek at the church service at Old Mill Court.

I am really enjoying training to be a Pastoral Assistant. During this year I have spent a considerable length of time researching the necessary requirements needed to start a Messy Church. In January 2013 I went to Runshaw College, Leyland to discover what a Messy Church was. In March 2013 I went to Morecambe on a day course for Messy Church. In July 2013 I gained a certificate in Food Hygiene needed for Messy Church. I went to visit Messy Churches in Darwin, Penwortham and Leyland. I have received a lot of help from Susan Witts, Children’s Worker for Blackburn Diocese, Moira Greenwood, of the Children’s Team, Blackburn Diocese, Rev Sharon Baines and Rie Walker.

I am the coordinator of our Messy Church, and although it’s early days we have had a very successful start with 27 children and 16 adults attending in November. I will be working to further develop and establish our Messy Church and look forward to becoming a Pastoral Assistant in the near future.Rona McClureLooking back, with a glance forward!

Because of time constraints we have had to publish this month’s magazine early so I hope that the later things that I record here were enjoyed by all and a sense of spiritual peace has been experienced.

Advent Sunday saw Rie ‘kick off’ her placement proper leading the worship at 10.30 up to the peace. St Michael’s welcomed the Reverend Sharon Baines as she celebrated communion at both services. With those two ladies and Margaret our 9.00 communion assistant we had a wonderful affirmation of women’s ministry. The services were followed by a Parish Lunch when Sharon & Derek gave a presentation, aided by Elizabeth Swarbrick, on their trip to Okorom Tididiek in Uganda.

School held their advent service in church the next day and we heard some wonderful singing and prayers by the children.

The Village Christmas fair was held on a drizzly evening but was well attended.Derek has visited both schools to carry out Crib Services with the infants and to watch Nativity Plays.

The Michael’s Club and School played their part in our Christmas worship in the 10.30 service.

We will have held our 2nd Christingle service, this is a service that recognises the work of the Church of England Children’s Society and raises money for their work.

Our Stewardship Campaign has now launched with our first meeting on the 18th. Thanks to all for your support by being there or by your prayer ministry. Derek will be asking for other volunteers in the New Year as we explore how we use our time and talents in living the Gospel.

The School term ended with their Carol Service held in church.

Then we had Christmas with its various acts of worship.2014 brings what?

6

Page 7: Church Officers - Much Hoole€¦  · Web viewWe look to the words of scripture, inspired by God {The word inspiration comes by way of Vulgate Latin and the King James English translations

Hopefully a renewed vigour as we enhance our understanding of our faith and our church and how the two link to form our mission. Stewardship inevitably leads to raising funds – we need money to help support our mission in all its forms.

The Ministry Team will take a greater role and importance. Watch the Sunday notice sheets for announcements as we need more than our ‘regular’ 8 members!We hope to grow the Pastoral Team to provide us with visitors who will visit the housebound, the sick and the dying. Also it would be nice to have one or two more communion assistants on the rota who would also be willing to take communion to the housebound.

We will look at vocations – I feel that there are some of you who potentially have a greater role to play in the ministry and mission of St Michael’s.

January sees the “Africa Experience” being shared with Mothers’ Union groups and other parishes in the Deanery so if you missed the one at St Michael’s ask Derek for dates.

The Beaver Scouts will be working for their ‘Faith’ Activity badge during the month.

Our Pilgrimage to the Holy Land group meets during January to get to know each other & learn more about the Pilgrimage.

Scripture readings for January 2014By popular demand you will find the 3.00 Evening Prayer readings are now included.

THE WAR TO END ALL WARS: Part 1: Tensions in Europe On July 28th 1914 the continent of Europe was at peace,

though riven with tensions between the great powers (Germany, Russia, France, Austria-Hungary and Britain). That Sunday morning, however, a sniper, probably a Serbian activist, shot and killed the Archduke Ferdinand of Bosnia-Herzegovina outside Sarajevo railway station.

For a month Europe held its breath as diplomats and politicians from the major nations went into crisis mode. Those involved mostly knew each other - in fact, several were related. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, after all, was a grandson of Queen Victoria! Yet long-standing feuds in the Balkans, fierce nationalism, new ‘Ententes’ between some of the powers, swollen arsenals of weapons and - perhaps most of all - fear of one another paralysed their approach. July passed, and with it the hope of peace.

No one knew, of course, what dark and appalling forces they were about to unleash, but on August 4th the most terrible war of European history erupted. Not surprisingly it has become known simply as the ‘Great War’. By the time it ended four years later it had involved 65 million troops, brought about the deaths of twenty million soldiers and civilians, and injured another 21 million people. It’s a truism to say that it changed history, but a glance at any war memorial in Britain is a constant reminder of its cruel cost in human terms. Many villages lost almost all their young men. Families were decimated, children lost fathers, women lost their boyfriends. Those who lived through it - my parents’ generation - would never forget its consequences.

Throughout this year the story of that dreadful conflict will be re-told as we mark the centenary of its outbreak. It’s surely pointless, so long after the event, to attempt to apportion blame. Thoughts of military conflict between the nation-states involved seem remote and ridiculous today. Yet whatever its immediate trigger, that War, and its strange child, the Second World War, have shaped the modern world.

12

Page 13: Church Officers - Much Hoole€¦  · Web viewWe look to the words of scripture, inspired by God {The word inspiration comes by way of Vulgate Latin and the King James English translations

It must all seem a long while ago now to schoolchildren studying it as history, but for many of us older people it was a conflict that involved our parents or grandparents, and changed their lives forever. My father enlisted in 1914. He and millions like him had been told they were fighting ‘the war to end all wars’. Sadly, it wasn’t. By David Winter, a former Head of Religious Broadcasting at the BBC.

The naming of Jesus It is Matthew and Luke who tell the story of how the angel

instructed that Mary’s baby was to be named Jesus - a common name meaning ‘saviour’. The Church recalls the naming of Jesus on 1 January - eight days after 25 December (by the Jewish way of reckoning days). For in Jewish tradition, the male babies were circumcised and named on their eighth day of life.

For early Christians, the name of Jesus held a special significance. In Jewish tradition, names expressed aspects of personality. Jesus’ name permeated his ministry, and it does so today: we are baptised in the name of Jesus (Acts 2:38), we are justified through the name of Jesus (1 Cor 6:11); and God the Father has given Jesus a name above all others (Phil 2:9). All Christian prayer is through ‘Jesus Christ our Lord’, and it is ‘at the name of Jesus’ that one day every knee shall bow.

Have you ever wondered where the name ‘Jesus’ comes from?

The name Jesus is a transliteration of a name that occurs in several languages. It is of Hebrew origin, ‘Yehosua’, or Joshua. Or there is the Hebrew-Aramaic form, ‘Yesua’. In Greek, it became ‘ Ἰησοῦς’ (Iēsoûs), and in Latin it became ‘Iesus’.

The meaning of the name is ‘Yahweh delivers’ or ‘Yahweh rescues’, or ‘Yahweh is salvation’. No wonder the angel Gabriel in Luke 1:26-33 told Mary to name her baby Jesus: “because he will save his people from their sins”.

~~~~~~~~~FOMO (Friends of Mulanje Orphans)
Teka’s Story: Teka is now 12 and a survivor – thanks to FOMO.Her parents split up when she was very
small and Teka lived with her dad. She was just five when he died. Rejected by her Mum, who had remarried, and by other relations, the future looked bleak for little Teka. Luckily her 9 year-old brother had the
17
Page 18: Church Officers - Much Hoole€¦  · Web viewWe look to the words of scripture, inspired by God {The word inspiration comes by way of Vulgate Latin and the King James English translations
sense to ask FOMO for help. It was decided Teka should stay in the children’s house where a care assistant would protect and care for her. A happy Teka was soon top of her class at school.One day she was involved in an accident on the way home from school, which left her battered and bruised. FOMO’s clinical staff visited her every day, but she lost some schooling and it was decided she should board at the school to make up the lost time and avoid the perils of travelling .Again she bounced back and was soon at the top of her class once more.
Then in June this year FOMO had a call from the school to say she was very sick and had been like that for two weeks. FOMO immediately went to collect her and found she was so weak that she couldn’t even walk across the room. The FOMO ambulance was called and she was taken to Mulanje Mission (a fee paying hospital) where she stayed for a couple of nights, Despite a diagnosis that she was just run down and would be better in a week, her condition didn’t improve. Again the FOMO ambulance was called. This time she was taken to Blantyre, and a hospital with a working X-ray machine. As our own clinician had suspected, Teka had TB. FOMO paid the bill and got medicine. Within a week (staying at the FOMO centre) she was up and about and looking a lot better, though still in some pain, 6 months later and she has completed the TB treatment, Teka is now back to normal, and she is now back at school and doing well. But where should Teka live?
Enter Sheila, who helped to care for Teka while she was ill and shared an obvious bond. A ‘FOMO child’ herself, Sheila is now married with her own child, but her house was too small to take in an extra child. FOMO again stepped in and rented a house for Sheila. her family and Teka. Teka once again is doing well at school and has a family that she can settle down with. Now in her final year of primary school it is anticipated that she will pass to go on to Secondary school and with the right funding, will go even further.
18
Page 19: Church Officers - Much Hoole€¦  · Web viewWe look to the words of scripture, inspired by God {The word inspiration comes by way of Vulgate Latin and the King James English translations
If FOMO hadn’t been there Teka would be begging on the streets. Now she has a chance to be Teka.
Helping does, has and will make a difference, but we do need YOU to help sponsor children like Teka,
Your gift today can save a child from a life of suffering, and open up a world of opportunities.
On how to run your Diary for 2014The RectorySt. James the Least
My dear Nephew Darren  So, you have just attended a course on ‘Diary Management’, to get you prepared for another year. If you had visited me, I could have told you all you need to know in half the time. Allow me to provide you with useful information which was probably not provided in your conference hand-outs.
First: buy the smallest diary you can find: large blank pages only encourage you to fill them with too many appointments; the smaller the page, the easier it can be made to appear that your days are fully booked.
19
Page 20: Church Officers - Much Hoole€¦  · Web viewWe look to the words of scripture, inspired by God {The word inspiration comes by way of Vulgate Latin and the King James English translations
  Second: make sure that it is of a size that will conveniently fit into any pocket. When dates are being arranged for subsequent meetings, you can theatrically start going through jacket, trouser and overcoat pockets. By the time you discover it was in your briefcase all along, all the dates will have been fixed and no one will notice you never got any of them.  Third: adopt your own private code for bookings. This means that any parishioner looking over your shoulder and seeing “1.30pm PLS” or “7.30pm WTD” will assume you are attending important church meetings. The fact that they mean “Post Lunch Sleep” and “Walk The Dog” will be known to you alone – although do have alternative possibilities for your acronyms should you ever be challenged. My congregation know I am assiduous in attending the “Pauline Letters Seminars” and my membership of the “World Theology Directorate” is of many years standing.
Fourth: Record everything in pencil so that once you return home, you can rub most of it out and can then deny you knew anything about those meetings you were supposed to attend – and to prove it, you can show the blank page in your diary.
Fifth: Put someone else’s address inside your diary. Should you ever have to resort to the ultimate act and need to lose it, you do not want some Good Samaritan returning it to you from the churchyard compost heap.
So you see, your day of flip charts and group discussions were quite wasted – and I would gladly have presented my course for half their price.Your loving uncle,Eustace
St WULFSTAN19th January
St Wulfstan was Bishop of Worcester from 1062-95. He lived during the Norman Conquest of England and was the only Saxon bishop to remain under William the Conqueror.
Wulfstan was a caring and hard-working monk. He rebuilt the cathedral at Worcester, cared for the poor, and struggled to ease the harsh conditions imposed by the Normans on the Saxons. Unlike some priests, he baptised children of the poor without charge. It is said that he never turned away people asking for help.
Wulfstan fought the slave trade in Bristol (slave trading didn’t just start with slaves from Africa but had been going on for centuries with slaves from England being sold to Ireland and North Africa).
Wulfstan died whilst washing the feet of 12 poor men during a service in the cathedral. He died as he had lived, serving God and caring for others.
