    Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 11, 2020 I can do all things in him who

    strengthens me. — Philippians 4:13

Twenty-Eight Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus’ parable of the king’s wedding feast sounds extreme to our modern ears. After all, if a king — a beloved celeb-rity, say — were to invite us to his son’s party, which one of us would refuse, much less murder the messenger? In Matthew’s Gospel, the chief priests and elders obstinately refuse to acknowledge Jesus’ mission as the anointed Son of God. Today’s parable suggests that God will punish this stubbornness by burning their city. The extreme vio-lence of this parable seems to be aimed at Jesus’ stubborn first-century audience, but falls short of hitting us.

    RESTORING RELATIONSHIPS, BUILDING BRIDGES

Instead of dismissing or quaintly smiling at today’s para-ble, we can let the word of God work in our hearts. Jesus, who is the word of God, exists in all time and knows each of us intimately. He speaks to us today through this very parable. The king’s invitation applies to us. The Creator of the universe calls us, and we must respond. Eternal life is at stake. Today’s liturgy is a rich opportunity to identify the invita-tion extended by God. This liturgy itself is our collective glimpse into heaven. Perhaps the Lord is calling us to be more attentive to the liturgy, or to enter more deeply into a parish’s weekend experience. Or perhaps our liturgical prayer time today will reveal a call to service, an invita-tion to care intentionally for strangers in need or for peo-ple we know. Perhaps, too, we might discern a call to re-pair brokenness. Most of us do not witness murder or burning cities on a daily basis, but we surely know of re-lationships in need of repair. Once we hear the invitation to reconcile with others, we can pray for the strength to respond. Instead of ignoring the summons by filling our time with busyness, we can ask the Lord to help us apolo-gize, or forgive, or begin a difficult conversation. “Many are invited.” Jesus tells us. He will help us respond. —copyright © 2020, J.S.Paluch Company, Inc.

Fratelli Tutti “Fratelli Tutti” (“Brothers all”), the new papal encyclical on fraternity and social friendship, is an important teach-ing document that must be read by anyone who wants to know where Pope Francis is coming from. Here are five things to look for in the new encyclical. 1. It’s not a beach read First, there are a few ways to take in the new encyclical: skim it or read it slowly in small chunks. I don’t recom-mend trying to get through the 43,000-word document, written in stately papal prose, as you would a book — say over a weekend. You’ll find yourself nodding off. Skimming the encyclical for a few juicy quotes will get you ready for the next Catholic cocktail party. But if you want to understand Francis, take your time. Do not try to read more than a chapter in one sitting. Give the text time to marinate. Each chapter takes time to digest. Chapter one describes the sad state of the world. It is de-pressing, yet the pope offers hope. “Difficulties that seem overwhelming.” he writes, “are opportunities for growth, not excuses for a glum resignation that can lead only to acquiescence.” Chapter two, a meditation on the parable of the Good Sa-maritan, could make good material for parish discussion groups. Chapters three and four present the pope’s fundamental vision. “The spiritual stature of a person’s life is measured by love,” he writes. This love must extend beyond family, tribe and nation to strangers, migrants and all people into a social friendship where the worth of every person is acknowledged. These chapters are foundational to Fran-cis’ approach to humanity and its problems. Chapter five presents the pope’s political philosophy, chapter six is on the importance of social and cultural val-ues, and chapter seven deals with reconciliation and peace building. One can only wish politicians and world leaders read these chapters, which stress that we should see every-one as our brother and sister and treat them with kindness and respect. Finally, chapter eight speaks of the role of religion in building fraternity. This chapter will be especially useful for ecumenical and inter-religious dialogs. • LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

THE WISDOM OF THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNTS

#71. Although “the wickedness of man was great in the earth” (Gen 6:5) and the Lord “was sorry that he had made man on the earth” (Gen 6:6), nonetheless, through Noah, who remained innocent and just, God decided to open a path of salvation. In this way he gave humanity the chance of a new beginning. All it takes is one good person to restore hope! The biblical tradition clearly shows that this renewal entails recovering and respecting the rhythms inscribed in nature by the hand of the Crea-tor. We see this, for example, in the law of the Sabbath. On the seventh day, God rested from all his work. He commanded Israel to set aside each seventh day as a day of rest, a Sabbath, (cf. Gen 2:2-3; Ex 16:23; 20:10). Sim-ilarly, every seven years, a sabbatical year was set aside for Israel, a complete rest for the land (cf. Lev 25:1-4), when sowing was forbidden and one reaped only what was necessary to live on and to feed one’s household (cf. Lev 25:4-6). Finally, after seven weeks of years, which is to say forty-nine years, the Jubilee was celebrated as a year of general forgiveness and “liberty throughout the land for all its inhabitants” (cf. Lev 25:10). This law came about as an attempt to ensure balance and fairness in their relationships with others and with the land on which they lived and worked. At the same time, it was an acknowledgment that the gift of the earth with its fruits belongs to everyone. Those who tilled and kept the land were obliged to share its fruits, especially with the poor, with widows, orphans and foreigners in their midst: “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field to its very border, neither shall you gather the gleanings after the harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner” (Lev 19:9-10). Fr. Terry’s Response: As we remember the story of Noah, Pope Francis is re-minding us of the past and that we do receive second chances and even more. We need to ask ourselves if we are willing to alter our life styles or must we go through cleansing as drastic as the Flood to reverse climate change. We need to remember that while we need to pay attention to all that the sciences can teach us and help cope with what lies ahead. It takes more than science and knowledge and even good will to motivate human nature to do what is right . We need Grace to move our hearts and give us the strength to make the necessary sacrifices to achieve the healing of our planet. Let us pray that we will all turn to God and find wisdom and insight.
