During Lent: Mass will begin without the usual procession into the church. We ask the community to be quiet and meditate in silence five minutes before Mass. We will have Stations of the Cross, followed by Benediction every Friday night, 7:30p.m. Children of the parish are asked to share their pennies with the Poor of the World. A glass jar in the sanctuary labeled “Pennies for the Poor” is for the children to use during Lent. They can come up during the collection and place their money in the jar.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today Lent begins. Ash Wednesday initiates the forty days of the Lenten fast, but since Sundays are not tallied in the days of fasting, today is the solemn opening of the forty days of Lent. The Church has work to do today, principally the calling forward of those chosen (the proper word is elected) for the Easter sacraments. Some of those who have been catechumens may now make a transition to a new way of life as the “elect.” For them, this Lent will be a time of “purification” and “enlightenment.” For us who accompany them, it is a time of helping them discern God’s call and prepare for new life. This year, while the readings from the third year of the Lectionary cycle are usually read, they are set aside on certain Sundays for the benefit of the elect. We turn then to the read-ings from Year A, and we give those who journey to the font of baptism three extraordinary companions. In the Gospels for those days, we meet the woman of Samaria and the man born blind, and we come to the tomb of Lazarus three days after his death. Many bishops celebrate the Rite of Election on or near today, affirming God’s choice for these new faithful, and also offering them the solidarity of many companions. In 2013, over 38,000 adults entered the baptismal waters in the United States, a remarkable testimony to the vigor of our tradition of receiving and nurturing adult faith. —Rev. LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#120 We are all missionary disciples In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples (cf. Mt 28:19). All the bap-tized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization, and it would be insufficient to envisage a plan of evangelization to be carried out by professionals while the rest of the faithful would simply be passive recipients. The new evangelization calls for personal involvement on the part of each of the baptized. Every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization; indeed, anyone who has truly experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love. Every Christian is a mission-ary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are “disciples” and “missionaries”, but rather that we are always “missionary disci-ples”. If we are not convinced, let us look at those first disci-ples, who, immediately after encountering the gaze of Jesus, went forth to proclaim him joyfully: “We have found the Mes-siah!” (Jn 1:41). The Samaritan woman became a missionary immediately after speaking with Jesus and many Samaritans come to believe in him “because of the woman’s testimo-ny” (Jn 4:39). So too, Saint Paul, after his encounter with Jesus Christ, “immediately proclaimed Jesus” (Acts 9:20; cf. 22:6-21). So what are we waiting for? Fr. Terry’s Remarks— We have become so used to being hushed up in church and told to listen to those who know and understand better that we have forgotten our true calling. No one imagines anyone ever telling a mother that she can't show her baby how to make the sign of the cross or teach him/her the Hail Mary. Pope Francis is assuring every one of us today that since we are baptized and have received the faith, every one of us, without exception, is a 'missionary disciple'. Every one of us is called to share the Good News with everyone we meet at home or abroad. We are all gifted with so many talents and abilities on how to relate to and communicate with our brothers and sisters. It is not a question of my education, my position, my place in the hierarchy. I have been baptized, I have been greatly graced by God, so each of us in our own way can share that faith, that grace, that love, that compassion with everyone we encounter in life. Let us listen again to Pope Francis: '' The Samaritan woman became a missionary immediately after speaking with Jesus and many Samaritans come to believe in Him, '' because of the woman's testimony'' (Jn 4:39). Let's all get started, what are we waiting for? Note: The Joy of the Gospel is a Letter that Pope Francis gave us all over two years ago. It runs to 288 paragraphs. Each one is full of joy and hope but taken in one dose you become deliri-ous. So, I'm trying to share it with you bit by bit. If you would like your own copy, please Google Amazon and type in; The Joy of the Gospel and a copy is in your hands in a few days. Joyful sharing, Fr Terry.
