JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Juda-ism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in cam-el skins and ate grasshoppers, John’s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah 49:3). John’s humility—“I am not he”—was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrat-ing one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical cal-endar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocab-ulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Mon-treal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dress-A-Girl Ministry This ministry of making dresses for girls around the world has been active since 2012 in our parish. Typically we send out hundreds of dresses each year to various places in the world, mostly with someone traveling to that place. If you happen to know someone who travels and could take some dresses, please call the number listed. Currently Fr. Narcis Kabipi, who was in our parish for 2 years as he studied at GTU, is taking 50 dresses to his home village in Tanzania. Our group meets occasionally to put the kits together with all the parts needed for a dress. It's a fun time and needs no sewing skill. Any one who would like to join us ...our next meeting is Tuesday, June 26 at 1:15 PM in the Holy Family Room in the hall. Please park in back of the hall to enter. For anyone wanting to sew, come to the meeting or call Dorothy. If anyone has fabric for dresses who would like to donate...or for any information about the project, please call Dorothy Giammona...510-881-5326.

Sixty Plus or Minus Club Please join us for our continental breakfast and meeting in the Hall following the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Friday, July 6th. Our hosts will be June Rigley, Kay McCann, Carol Moss, Elena Jiminez, and Elsie Boyd. Bingo will be played after the meeting. Non-members are always welcome. Please sign up today if you plan to attend.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#242

Dialogue between faith, reason and science.

Dialogue between science and faith also belongs to the work of evangelization at the service of peace. Whereas positivism and scientism “refuse to admit the validity of forms of knowledge other than those of the positive sci-ences”, the Church proposes another path, which calls for a synthesis between the responsible use of methods prop-er to the empirical sciences and other areas of knowledge such as philosophy, theology, as well as faith itself, which elevates us to the mystery transcending nature and human intelligence. Faith is not fearful of reason; on the contra-ry, it seeks and trusts reason, since “the light of reason and the light of faith both come from God” and cannot contradict each other. Evangelization is attentive to scien-tific advances and wishes to shed on them the light of faith and the natural law so that they will remain respect-ful of the centrality and supreme value of the human per-son at every stage of life. All of society can be enriched thanks to this dialogue, which opens up new horizons for thought and expands the possibilities of reason. This too is a path of harmony and peace.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks—You are all aware by now what it is like when a fervent supporter of one political party meets a member of the opposing party. All is light and understanding, right!!! Well something similar is at play when people of faith begin to dialogue with persons who prize reason or science. Each feel, speak and think in a different language. So it takes time, patience and diligence for each of them to learn and come to terms with new concepts, new ways of seeing and understanding. That's why nearly every time a new breakthrough is made in science or medicine, we automatically feel it is some kind of threat to our faith beliefs. And a scientist who does not have any concept of faith finds it almost impossible to comprehend where we are coming from. Of course there are scientists who have faith and faith people who practice science and even reason at times. These find it much easier to dialogue fruitfully and can translate for the rest of us, if we are willing to listen.
