POWER STRUGGLE Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday’s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show trib-ute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus’ response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power—the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. October, Month of the Rosary

Did you know? We will be taking an attendance count at all of the Masses during the month of October.

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process for adults who wish to become Catholics. They meet weekly for several months to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion at the Easter Vigil. The low-key and confidential meetings are where we share our spirituality as well as discuss the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have been baptized and have re-ceived First Communion but not Confirmation are wel-come to join if they wish to be confirmed in a diocesan ceremony in February. Classes will be held on Monday evenings, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Rectory beginning October 23, 2017.

Congratulations to the parents of: Maliah Marie Bargas-Good who was baptized here last weekend.

Sixty Plus or Minus Club Please join us in the Hall following the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Friday, November 3rd. Our hosts for the meeting will be Dorothy Maisel, Barbara Coelho, Bernice Ferguson, Shirley Thornally and Pat Moeller. If you plan to attend, please sign up today so our hosts can accommodate eve-ryone. Bingo will be played after the meeting.

St. Vincent de Paul Collection There will be a second collection for our Society of St. Vincent de Paul on the weekend of October 28 and 29. St. Vincent de Paul is our outreach to the poor in our parish. We help our needy neighbors by providing assistance for food, transportation, and other household assistance. Last month SVdP volunteers provided assis-tance to 216 needy neighbors, many of whom were chil-dren. Over 99% of the money you contribute goes di-rectly to the poor. We hope you will be generous once again so we can continue to help the poor. If you are interested in finding out more about SVdP and possibly becoming a member, contact Carl Bellone at: [email protected] or call the parish office.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#207

The economy and the distribution of income

Any Church community, if it thinks it can comforta-bly go its own way without creative concern and ef-fective cooperation in helping the poor to live with dignity and reaching out to everyone, will also risk breaking down, however much it may talk about so-cial issues or criticize governments. It will easily drift into a spiritual worldliness camouflaged by reli-gious practices, unproductive meetings and empty talk. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Last week we talked about the responsibility of wise personal, family, local and national economic decisions. Pope Francis reminds us this week that Church communities like Transfig-uration also have similar responsibilities. As a parish community and as followers of Christ, we have a duty of concern and effective cooperation in helping the poor to live with dignity. When we do this, we will more than likely upset some authorities or indi-viduals. We must be ready to say or do what is right, otherwise we drift into a worldly spirituality and as Pope Francis often reminds us, we become ideo-logues and use our religious practice as camouflage. Our common humanity, our sincere following of Christ does not give us the false security of sitting on the fence.
