How God Intends us to Live

Today’s readings are again directed to believers, communities of faith. As in last week’s reading, Amos confronts us with a condemnation of those whose lives are focused on pleasure and self-absorption. The psalm contrasts that focus with the Lord’s—justice for the oppressed; food the hungry; freedom for captives; sight to the blind; raising of those who are bowed down; loving the just; protect-ing strangers, orphans, and the widow; and by doing so, thwarting the way of the wicked. Timothy urges the pursuit of righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Luke tells the familiar tale of the wealthy man and the poor beggar at his door-step, who experience life very differently in this world and in the next. St. Thérèse of Lisieux’s October 1

“I prefer the monotony of obscure sacrifice to all ecstasies. To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul.”

These are the words of Thérèse of Lisieux, a Carmelite nun called the “Little Flower,” who lived a cloistered life of obscurity in the convent of Lisieux, France. And her preference for hidden sacrifice did indeed convert souls. Few saints of God are more popular than this young nun. Her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, is read and loved throughout the world. Thérèse Martin entered the convent at the age of 15 and died in 1897 at the age of 24.

Life in a Carmelite convent is indeed une-ventful and consists mainly of prayer and hard do-mestic work. But Thérèse possessed that holy insight that redeems the time, however dull that time may be. She saw in quiet suffering a redemptive suffering, suffering that was indeed her apostolate. Thérèse said she came to the Carmel convent “to save souls and pray for priests.” And shortly before she died, she wrote: “I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth.”

Thérèse was canonized in 1925. On October 19, 1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, the third woman to be so recognized in light of her holiness and the influence of her teaching on spirituality in the Church.

Her parents, Louis and Zélie, were beatified in 2008, and canonized in 2015.

in 2008, and canoThérèse has much to teach our age of the image, the appearance, the “self.” We have become a dangerously self-conscious people, pain-fully aware of the need to be fulfilled, yet knowing we are not. Thérèse, like so many saints, sought to serve others, to do something outside herself, to for-get herself in quiet acts of love. She is one of the great examples of the gospel paradox that we gain our life by losing it, and that the seed that falls to the ground must die in order to live.

Preoccupation with self separates modern men and women from God, from their fellow human beings, and ultimately from themselves. We must re-learn to forget ourselves, to contemplate a God who draws us out of ourselves, and to serve others as the ultimate expression of selfhood. These are the in-sights of Saint Thérèse, and they are more valid to-day than ever. Saint Thérèse is the Patron Saint of florists, missionaries, pilots and priests. Rite of the Christian Initiation of Adults Sacred Heart Church has The Rite of the Christian Initiation of Adults program in English for anyone who has not completed their three initiation Sacraments, (Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation). Classes started on Tuesday, Septem-ber 17, 2019. Religious Education Classes

Registration is now open for the 2019-2020 school year. Classes are every Sunday from 9:30am -10:45am for students in grades 1-8. Registration forms can be found in the rectory, at the Religious Education office located inside Sacred Heart School and online at shchartsdale.org. We have positions available for any volun-teer who wants to be a catechist or aide. Please send an email to sacredheartreprogram@gmail.com with any questions you may have regarding the program or to volunteer as a catechist or aide.

Network of Care The Sacred Heart Network of Care is an out-

reach committee of our parish. It is a "home grown, home administered" mission for our parishioners and for our immediate community. We reach out to Sa-cred Heart families and individuals in need. We serve the needs of the hungry in our community and we aid countless others with your generous support every year at Christmas; Sandwich Circle, Ecu-menical Food Pantry Delivery, Open Arms Din-ners, Holiday Gift Baskets and the Giving Tree are all part of the Sacred Heart Network of Care.

You can help this vital mission of Sacred Heart. The second collection on October 12 and 13 will be for the Network of Care. It will fund several of our outreach programs and ease the burdens of people you worship with, people you care about and people you pray for.

Annual Anointing Mass

Our Anointing Mass will be held on Satur-day, October 5, 2019 at 12 noon. This Mass is espe-cially for those recovering from a serious illness or suffering from a chronic illness or handicap. After Mass, please join us for coffee, tea, sandwiches and baked goods. If you know anyone who might like to attend, please extend an invitation and if possible offer a ride.

Sisters of Life

The Sisters of Life will be speaking at the Holy Masses celebrated on Respect Life Sunday, this October 5-6th, sharing with parishioners the charism of life given by the Holy Spirit to their community and the Church! The Sisters of Life is a contempla-tive/active religious community of women founded in 1991 by John Cardinal O’Connor for the protec-tion and enhancement of the sacredness of every hu-man life. We look forward to welcoming them to our parish!

2020 Mass Book and Schedule Changes

The Mass book for the year 2020 is open. Mass intentions can be reserved at the Rectory office Monday thru Friday. You can request Masses for the living, in thanksgiving, for your special intentions and for the deceased. Due to the priest shortage in our diocese, be-ginning on January 1, 2020, Sacred Heart Church will no longer have an 8:30 am Mass Monday thru Friday. In addition there will only be one Mass on Saturday morning at 8:30 am. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Mass Attendance

Our Mass attendance was 1,108. Our last week’s collection was $7,091. Thank you for your continued financial sup-port to our Parish and its many needs. Your finan-cial generosity for the upkeep of our Parish build-ings and programs is essential and greatly appreciat-ed.
