Parish Life Weekly Schedule In teaching teenagers and young adults about the fundamentals of faith (as in, “Why do we believe in anything at

all?), I will sometimes ask the group to help make a list of the Hollywood-types they know of who have died by their own hands or under “questionable circumstances.” Depending on the age of the group, and their knowledge of popular culture, we usually start slowly [John Belushi … Marilyn Monroe …] but end up with quite a list [Michael Jackson … River Phoenix … Janis Joplin … Kurt Cobain … Robin Williams … ]. With one particularly sharp bunch of young people, we were able to scrawl twenty names on the chalkboard in under a minute (a few of whom I myself had never heard of). This last week, two more names are available to add to that catalog: fashion designer Kate Spade, and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. My point in making the list is to demonstrate that life is more complicated than we tend to think. When we are young, we are sure that “happiness” is a matter of having enough of four things: popularity, wealth, power, and pleasure. We’ve all had small doses of them and found them delightful … so we make the (simplistic) deduction that the secret to being a happy camper in life is heaping up more of them. The world of advertising is built on this. Most commercials whisper into our ears, “You know, you really aren’t very good the way you are … but, if you drove a certain car, wore a certain brand of clothing or a certain type of make-up, then all your problems would be solved.” That is (to be kind) a big fib … but advertising must work, or manufacturers wouldn’t be pouring billions of dollars into it. My list of famous people who have committed suicide isn’t meant to take a shot at “Hollywood,” but would make the simpler point that if these people, who really did have heaps of the Big Four things that we think will ensure our happiness, and still weren’t happy … why would we think it is going to work for us? Popularity, wealth, power, and pleasure will never fill me up. I haven’t heard anything on Ms. Spade, but the consensus on what pushed Mr. Bourdain to take his life was depression. People like that are all around us. My mom battled with depression, and from time to time she’d say to me, “You have no idea, Mark, how terrible it is … so be gentle with people who suffer with it.” The Catechism of the Church sounds like my mom, when it says: “Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, [or] suffering … can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide. We should not despair of [their salvation]. By ways known to Him alone, God can provide the opportunity for [healing] repentance.” [CCC, 2282-2283]. The Catechism goes on to urge us to pray for those who take their own lives. I hope you will. But maybe there is something more we should do as well. Fr. Mark

Readings for the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (June 24)

(Isaiah 49:1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Luke 1:57-66, 80)

We just got started with the scriptures of Ordinary Time, and here we are again taking a break from them to keep a feast in honor of the one who prepared the way for Christ’s coming. The first reading is one of the four “Servant Songs” in the book of the Prophet Isaiah. For the original author, they spoke of the ups and downs in the life of an anonymous agent of God. During Lent we read this poem as a reflection on Jesus’ ministry. And now we are asked to read it yet again with the Baptist in mind. It’s not the tiny details, but the overarching pattern of “divine call -divine blessing—seeming failure—final vindication” that mark out God’s helpers. How about you? Do you see yourself in this poem? If not, why not?

Father’s Day Carnations will be available after Mass today. Honor your father or your husband by giving him a white carnation that symbolizes respect, purity and decency. Some people, whose loving husbands or fathers are deceased, have placed Fa-ther’s Day carnations on their graves to honor the memory of their loved one. A $1 donation is appreciated. Proceeds go to Morality in Media—Marathon County to help them continue the fight against pornography and vio-lence in the media and on the Internet.

We’re cheering on those of you who are you still “paying down” a

Diocesan Annual Appeal pledge!

Both Eastside Parishes have covered themselves with glory in meeting their share of the Diocesan Annual Appeal this year in pledges … but to actually “reach the goal” the payment needs to follow. Like the pastor(!), some of you are pay-ing down your gift in installments. This is a reminder that the end of the fiscal year for the Annual Appeal is June 30, and for gifts to make it into this year’s effort they must be postmarked by then. If you are still working on paying yours down, the mailing address for the DAA is:

Diocese of La Crosse Attn: Annual Appeal

PO Box 4004 La Crosse, WI 54602-4004

Congratulations to
