THE SEASON OF ADVENT
AND MUSIC
We all know that at this time of year all of the retail stores and radio stations have already started playing Christmas music. The sad part is that by 5:00 pm on Christmas day they have already gone back to their regular programming just when the Christmas season actually begins. While the secular world may love their Christmas music in November, which is fine, the Liturgical life of the church is a whole other story. The church calls for each liturgical season to be celebrated with music dedicated to each liturgical season. This is stated in both the "General Instruction of the Roman Missal" (GIRM) and "Music in Divine Worship" written by the U.S. Bishops. It is because of these liturgical documents that you won't hear any Christmas Music during Mass in the season of Advent. Christmas music is not used for Mass until the vigil Mass on Christmas eve. This year, during advent, we will be using a seasonal Psalm instead of the different psalm that is in the Missalette for each of the four weeks of Advent. The church gives us this option "In order to allow the people to join in more readily." "Some texts and responses have been chosen, according to the different season of the year, for optional use, whenever the psalm is sung, in place of the text corresponding to the reading." (GIRM n.36) This year we will use the response, "COME, O LORD, AND SET US FREE," This can be found on page 26 of the Missalette. We will use this for ALL four weeks of advent.
LESSONS AND CAROLS The Adult and Children’s Choir will be hosting our 3rd Annual Lessons and Carols service Sunday, December 15th at 4 pm – 4:45 pm in Resurrection Church.
Please join us for Scripture, Christmas Carols, and holiday goodies. If you aren’t in the Christmas Spirit yet, this event will surely prepare you to enter the Christmas Season.

THE BEST WAY TO PREACH TO THE “NONES” Recently, when the U.S. Bishops met in Baltimore for their fall General
Assembly, they were expected to discuss many topics. One topic that should have been particularly interesting was the evangelization of the fastest-growing population in the United States – the “nones.” Who are the nones? They are the vast number of people who say they hold absolutely no religious beliefs. We have gone, as a church, from concerning ourselves with ecumenical dialogue with our fellow Christians, both orthodox and Protestant, and with relations with our older brothers and sisters in the Old Covenant, the Jews and with Islam and
other religions, to dialogue with those who have zero religious faith. The nones, many of them young and highly educated, aren’t agnostic, doubting the existence of God. The nones aren’t atheistic because of well thought-out philosophical reasons. They simply don’t factor the Divine, into their worldview. The concept of God and the practice of religious belief doesn’t affect them. Bishop Robert E. Barron is an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the founder of the Word on Fire Apostolate, and is one of the church’s greatest evangelists today. Bishop Barron is very much in touch with today’s modern reality. He has given talks to employees of Google, and has an outreach on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The topic of nones should be relevant to all Catholics, not just the Bishops. How many nones do we know? Are they in our family? Are some nones our neighbors and co-workers? What do you think the best way is to present the Good News of Jesus Christ and his body, the church, to nones who are our brothers and sisters?
How can evangelization efforts take root and be more than just haranguing people who don’t reject the church because of a negative image or because of scandal, but because they find God and the things of God to be irrelevant and without meaning? Please write in and let us know. Perhaps the best way is through a Catholic Christian life that we should
all live. Pray that all will know that we are indeed Christians by our love. reprinted from : The Tablet
