Christ is with us always through faith, the sacra- ments, prayer and the life of the Church. People will now encounter Jesus through the life of the Church. That is why Jesus gave us the great commission to baptize all nations. And, finally, Jesus returned to heaven to "prepare a place for us." Our destination is the same and we should be united in knowing that we are all striving for heaven. Happy Ascension . . and next Sunday, Happy Pentecost. Love and Blessings, Fr. Bob Cilinski Pastor A Message from our Pastor Fr. Bob Cilinski Statement from Bishop Michael F. Burbidge Regarding Early Phase One Reintegration of Public Masses in the Diocese of Arlington https://nativityburke.org/covid-reintergration/ It is great news that we are now beginning to offer public celebrations of the Mass in some areas of our diocese. While we would like to join together as quickly as possible, we must proceed cautiously, consistent with guidance from state and local officials and health experts, in an effort to continue pro- tecting the health and safety of parishioners, volunteers, staff, clergy and all who serve throughout the Diocese. As we move forward, portions of the Diocese will reopen at different times as the commonwealth takes a regional approach to Phase One of re-opening. Governor Ralph Northam originally announced that many areas of the commonwealth will enter Phase One of re-opening on May 15. At the request of local officials in Northern Vir- ginia, the Governor has delayed Northern Virginia's reopening until at least May 29. The areas impacted are Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties (and those cit- ies located within that area) along with the City of Alexandria. Beginning May 16, parishes outside of Northern Virginia will be permitted, but not mandated, to resume public celebration of the Mass if the parish's pastor feels confident that Masses can be celebrated safely and in accordance with diocesan protocols. During this time and due to capacity limits, please do not plan to attend liturgies at any parish other than your own. Parishes will continue to livestream the Mass to the best of their ability. Guidelines for celebrating the Mass in Phase One include gathering at no more than 50% of the lowest occupancy of the room or facility, ensuring proper social distancing and diligently maintaining cleaning schedules. Additionally, all parishioners are expected to wear face coverings while on parish property. Due to social distancing requirements, not all parishes will be able to accommodate 50% capacity. Pastors of parishes out- side of Northern Virginia have the discretion to decide if they can safely enter Phase One. For the health of our priests and in order to allow for thorough cleaning between Masses, not all parishes will maintain a normal Mass schedule. Until further notice, I am continuing the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. I encourage those who are 65 years old or older, as well as those with underlying health conditions, to avoid gatherings of the general public and attending public litur- gies. In laying out the details of how we move forward, I will continue to be assisted by the Diocese of Arlington's Reinte- gration Working Group, which has been meeting regularly and is providing requirements, recommendations and resources to parishes as they begin to hold public Masses. Key resources have been provided to help parishioners wor- ship safely. In consultation with our pastors, I am confident we are responding to the best of our ability to the spiritual and physical well-being of the faithful and making appropriate progress in upholding with public health and federal, state and local directives. As this situation continues evolving, each phase will allow us the opportunity to take steps in a positive direction in unity and faith. May we continue to pray for one another and all those who need our prayers, especially at this time. We will continue to keep the faithful updated as the situation evolves. "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age”

My dear parishioners, Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus did return to heaven in triumph and glory. The Ascension is affirmed in the creed of the church, "He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father." Jesus is now the universal Lord of every nation. Every part of the world comes within his redeeming, healing embrace.

The Ascension is not about Jesus' absence but about a different kind of presence . . . His spiritual, sacramental presence. Christ is with us always through faith, the sacra-ments, prayer and the life of the Church. Bob Cilinski Pastor

A message from your Nativity Creation Care Ministry On this 5th Anniversary of Laudato Si’

This month we celebrate the 5th anniversary of Laudato Si’ and Laudato Si’ Week (May 16 - 24). On May 24, 2015 Pope Francis issued Laudato Si’. Five years later, the encyclical’s teachings are more relevant than ever given the tremendous challenges we face in light of COVID-19. The call to “hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” is timely as we look to support and rebuild our global community whose social, ecological, and economic fabric have been devastated.

The theme for Laudato Si’ Week is “Everything is connected” to stress our interconnectedness as a global community and the need for solidarity across borders. This month let us reflect together on the gifts and insights of Laudato Si’ amidst our current crises, pray as a global family on the Global Day of Prayer on May 24, and prepare to bring Laudato Si’ to life during Season of Creation and beyond.

Common prayer for the Global Day of Prayer on May 24th:

Loving God, Creator of heaven and earth and all that is in them, You created us in your image and made us stewards of all your creation, of our common home. You blessed us with the sun, water and bountiful land so that all might be nourished. Open our minds and touch our hearts, so that we may attend to your gift of creation. Help us to be conscious that our common home belongs not only to us, but to all future generations, and that it is our responsibil-ity to preserve it. May we help each person secure the food and resources that they need. Be present to those in need in these trying times, especially the poorest and those most at risk of being left behind. Transform our fear, anxiety and feelings of isolation into hope so that we may experience a true conversion of the heart. Help us to show creative solidarity in addressing the conse-quences of this global pandemic. Make us courageous to embrace the changes that are needed in search of the common good, now more than ever may we feel that we are all interconnected, in our efforts to lift up the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen

NATIVITY CATHOLIC SCHOOL A Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

Sign of the Times: Graduation Edition Winding our way through Northern Virginia in a five-car caravan, several Nativity teachers and staff, led by our principal, Maria Kelly, and Fathers Bob and Vaccaro, visited each of the homes of our graduating eighth graders, congratulating them on their impending commencement. Father Vaccaro rang door bells and placed the personalized graduation signs, making clean geta-ways every time. We all gathered to applaud, to congratulate, catch up, and laugh together. “It was a joy,” said Father Bob, “to see so many of our students in person again, and to visit -- even from a distance -- with some of our school families.
