“As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross.” (Matthew 27:32) The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him “carry his cross.” These opportunities aren’t usu-ally big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like help-ing someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person’s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return.

Getting started is easy! Go to www.faithdirect.net and enter code NJ630, or scan the QR code to your mobile phone.

Easter Dona-tions The Easter Collection is an important part of our annual revenue. We do ask that all parishioners make a special sacrifice and contribute gen-erously to our Easter Collec-tion. Please use the enve-

lope mailed to your home and mail it to 35 Mountain Ave., Somerville, 08876 or give online at www.FaithDirect.net. Thanks for your prayerful consid-eration of your Easter gift to your church.

MONDAY-WEDNESDAY MONDAY-WEDNESDAY MASS WILL BE LIVE-STREAMED AT 8AM WITH THE INTENTIONS FOR BOTH 6:30AM AND 8AM MASS INCLUDED. THE MASS WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE: WWW.IMMACULATECONCEPTION.ORG ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT WILL CONTINUE ON TUESDAY FROM 9AM—3PM IN THE MAIN CHURCH. SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love

You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were

already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

—St. Alphonsus Ligouri

In a recent blog post, Msgr. Charles Pope states that as Moses pleaded to God to be merciful to His sinful people, we too need to plea to God for mercy

on us. Msgr. Pope makes it clear that he is not conclud-ing that God is directly punishing the world with this current pandemic, but He has permi ed it. And as we know, the Biblical people used mes like these to re-pent and call upon God. As Msgr. Pope considered this, he writes that the following prayerful thoughts came to mind - "Lord God we are in a great crisis, a worldwide crisis. I am going to guess we probably had this coming. For, we have collec vely forgo en You, we have been ungrateful and done every sort of wicked deed. We have been greedy, wasteful, worldly, unchaste, unfaith-ful to marriage and family life, and have aborted our own children by the tens of millions. Yes Lord we have sinned and been stubbornly unrepentant. But Lord, I am, like Moses, asking your mercy. Even though we may not deserve it, I ask it anyway. Please Lord spare us from this disease and the economic collapse that will cause addi onal lives and harm. A miracle Lord, yes, we need a miracle. Please Lord, as you once did for King David and stopped the pes lence of that day at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, please do this now for us. Save us also from our excessive fears which have so seized many of us. For the sake of Christ’s sor-rowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world; Have mercy." During this last week of Lent, this Holy Week, let us truly repent, especially for sins against God's sacred gi of human life, and with confi-dence seek God's mercy. The importance of the events of Holy Week cannot be overstated. They are the most important happenings in all of human history. We see in Christ's passion and death the extraordinary extent of God's love for all human life and how greatly He values the life of each individual person. During this week let us repent, plea for God's mercy, give thanks for the eternal life that Christ brings to us, and to rededicate ourselves to imitate the love of God in giving ourselves to protect and nurture all human life. Call to Prayer Since we cannot face this alone, we are entrusting this whole situ-ation to our Blessed Mother, under her title of Our Lady of Guada-lupe through her Son, to whom our diocese was recently conse-crated, and encourage you to join us in praying this prayer:

Our Lady of Guadalupe, mother of God

and of the people of Metuchen you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and hope.

We rely on you, Health of the Sick, you who, at the cross, united with Jesus’ pain,

keeping steadfast your faith. You, Salvation of God’s people,

you know what we need and we are sure that you will provide for us,

as at Cana of Galilee, after the adversity of these days, may joy and celebration return.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do what we are told by Jesus,

who has taken our suffering upon Himself and has burdened Himself with our sorrows

to lead us through the cross, to the joy of resurrection. Under your protection, Holy Mother of God,

Our Lady of Guadalupe, we seek refuge, hear our prayer and intercede for us to the Father

so that we may be free from every danger, Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.

Amen.

Why I Wish to Serve in Appalachia

John Cavanagh ~ Junior

There is an abundance of reasons why I wish to serve the people in Appalachia. It is difficult to choose just one reason, so perhaps I will have to mention a few. A simple reason why I wish to serve in Appalachia is because it’s a good thing to do. I believe that when an opportunity to help others presents itself you should always answer the call; and in this case having the ability to go to a poverty stricken area in our own country and give the people in need our support, is a perfect example of answering the call. Doing the work that needs accomplishing in Appalachia not only helps to support the specific families in need, however, as a result of our work we have assisted the community to grow in their economy and built an amazing Community Center which supports and gives aid to so many families in Appalachia.

I have been blessed to participate in the Appalachia Mission for many years now, and it has truly had an impact on who I

am and how I see things today. This Mission trip has become a part of me. I know that I am a very different person because of it and I do not want to know who I would be without this incredible experience. Through this act of service I have really seen so much, and my point of view on so many things have been changed for the better.

I will never forget one memory from last year that really blew my mind. At the house I was working on, my work

Crew was building supports for and fixing walls. There was a man, Terry, who was close with the house owner who helped us out throughout the week even though he would not benefit from the work at all. My work Crew and I were very grateful for all his help. On the last day he had left early and we said our goodbyes. We had finished our job with some extra time to spare, therefore we went to visit one of the other work sites. On our way, we saw Terry walking on the side of the road. We pulled over and asked him where he was headed and he told us he was walking to his sister's house to watch his nieces and nephews. We asked him how far and he said it was about a four hour walk. All of us were shocked asked him how often he would do this, and he said several times a week, as if it was the most normal thing to do. We insisted that we drive him there and he hesitantly accepted … he did not want to inconvenience us. It began hailing and raining. After our 30-40 minute car ride was over taking him to his destination, he thanked us profusely and went on his way. We all sat in the car and just looked at each other in awe. We were all shocked that Terry would walk four hours, sometimes eight hours round trip each day to help his friends and siblings. This made me really think about everything I have and to never take having a “family” car for granted. It was crazy to imagine Terry walking in the hail and in rain on just that one day, it is hard to imagine him doing it multiple times a week. I was inspired by his generosity.

Finally and most importantly, I wish to serve in Appalachia because it brings me closer to God. Every year that I go to Ap-

palachia, both summer and Christmas, I see the presence of God all around me, in everyone, and in everything that is done. This Mission trip has truly strengthened my bond with God and has helped me grow in my faith in countless ways. I am so excited to serve in Appalachia this year and I am ecstatic the new experiences I will have, and cherished memories I will make.

Saint Zita Ministry Our Saint Zita Ministry serves and reaches out to the elderly in our parish who are living alone and may need help with washing and changing of sheets, towels as well as personal laundry. This gracious ministry visits with you, takes care of these chores and assists in those tasks that perhaps are becoming more of a challenge to you. If you would like assistance with these activities, please reach out to our Saint Zita Ministry. You can reach us by contacting Anna Ferreira, her email is [email protected] and her phone number is 908 240-8918. If there are parishioners who would themselves be interested in becoming a member of the Saint Zita Ministry, please reach out to Anna Ferreira. Saint Zita was born in Tuscany, Italy. At age 12 she was sent to work as a servant for a very rich family. She was abused and overworked from the very beginning. Her co-workers told the head of the household Zita was giving food to the poor when she should be baking bread. Upon returning to the kitchen they found angels doing Zita's work. She is the patron saint of domestic workers.

“Jesus said, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few. Therefore, ask the Lord…to send forth laborers for His har-vest.'” (Mt 9:37-38)

Dear St Zita, patron of domestic workers, help me to do my work with true piety and dedication to the Lord knowing all righteous industriousness is favorable to God. Amen.

t on MEn una reciente publicación de blog, Mons.
