Pastor’s Page
Dear Friends,
Although it sometimes seems we are progressing too slowly from the effects of the Coronavirus, it still
feels good to see so many parishioners attending Mass on Saturday night and Sunday. Every weekend, I
see a few more parishioners who are back at Mass. It’s great to see so many of you returning, and I
appreciate your confidence in us to keep the Church clean and safe. I specifically thank Jim McCabe and
Isabel for working so hard to keep the Church clean and sterilized. For those of you whom have not been
back, I ask you to give us a chance. From my perspective, we are as safe, or safer, than any other
business or institution in the area. Yes, the masks are uncomfortable, but we are only asking for one
hour with God.
As I mentioned in last week’s bulletin, we will be having First Holy Communion for our second graders on
Saturday, September 19th in our Church. We will also celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for our
ninth graders on Monday, October 19th. The Church will be clean and everything will be organized to
ensure everyone’s safety. These will be great days!
Some of you have been asking when we will begin the collections at Sunday Mass. In response to that, I
want to first thank those of you who have been so generous to our parish since the start of the
pandemic. Although it’s been a very challenging time, we have kept our losses to a minimum thanks to
your generosity!!
That said, we do need to bring our collections back. At this time, the collection baskets are in the front
and back of the Church for parishioners to place their donations. We are planning to meet with the
ushers and implement a safe procedure for taking the collection during Mass. When the time comes, it
will be well planned and safe. It may not be perfect, but we will do our best.
Our lector schedule is based on responses we received from our parishioners. Any parishioner who
responded to our invitation to read is on the schedule. The lector schedule ends on September 20th. If
you would like to be scheduled for the months of October and November, keep your eye on the bulletin
for more information.
I hope you and your family are well. We will continue to pray for each other.
Stay strong and stay close to God.
Peace and God Bless,
Fr. Grieco

The following story appeared in the New Hyde Park Herald Courier (theislandnow.com) on August 14: https://theislandnow.com/news-98/new-hyde-park-scout-troop-assists-in-hiking-rescue/ Several individuals mentioned in this article are parishioners at Holy Spirit Parish.
By Elliot Weld
Scouts and leaders from New Hyde Park’s Boy Scout Troop 298 encountered a tense situation while on a hike in Harriman State Park on Aug. 1 when a hiker fell off a rock ledge and broke his ankle.
The troop’s weekend getaway quickly became an exercise in first aid training.
Assistant Scoutmaster and New Hyde Park Village Trustee Rainer Burger said the troop knew almost immediately that the man had broken his leg since bone could be seen protruding from his leg.
The Scouts put his leg in a splint and supported the injured hiker with sleepingpads they had brought for the overnight trip.
Burger told one of the other adults present to call 911. The call center referred the call to park rangers who traced the cell phone’s position to find the troop’s location.
Burger said it took about 45 minutes to arrive and carry the injured man out via stretcher.

Pastor’s Page
The incident occurred on a section of the Appalachian Trail where Burger said the troop had arrived
by accident.
Burger he said was letting the Scouts do the navigating, but they had taken a wrong turn at one point and arrived in the area because they had to backtrack.
They were resting near an area known as the “Lemon Squeeze,” named for a narrow opening between two large rocks that hikers must go through when they heard a disturbance a ways off.
“We heard something like a bump, like a slip and fall in the distance and we said ‘that doesn’t sound right,’” Burger said. The hiker had slipped off a ledge and fallen about seven feet, according to Burger, landing on the trail below.
Burger said the hiker had “a few choice words” and speculated that he had broken a bone.
Burger said the hiker was surprised to see a Scout troop approach and spring into action.
The troop was presented with honors from the Village of New Hyde Park and Nassau County. Those scouts and leaders were Daniel Corcoran, Maks Manoni, Daniel Sohl, Daniel Dore, Michael Dore, Collin Lowey, Aaron Canese and Andrew Canese.

Reflection Sunday, August 23, 2020 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time (Lec. 121) 1) Isaiah 22:19-23 2) Romans 11:33-36 3) Matthew 16:13-20 FOCUS: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
We are reminded in the reading from Romans that God is the ultimate authority. It is God who gives all, who creates all, and for whom all exists. Let us, then, through prayer and deeds, humbly and confidently acknowledge Jesus as the Son of the Living God.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
The Lord tells Shebna, the scribe, I will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station and replace you with the honorable Eliakim. In the second reading, Paul writes to the Romans about the inscrutable judgments and unsearchable ways of God: For from him and through him and for him are all things. In the Gospel, Peter answers Jesus’ question, saying, You are the Christ, the son of the living God. Jesus blesses Peter and proclaims him as the rock upon whom he will build his church.

This year, due to COVID-19, the annual 5K Walk/Run will be virtual. Participants can walk, run, bike, or swim on their own, or with a small group of friends/family, any time during the week of September 26 - October 3, 2020.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul sponsors the 5K Walk/Run to raise awareness about poverty on Long Island and raise funds to help our neighbors in need. It is our largest fund raiser, and the parishioners, friends, and neighbors of Holy Spirit have always been very generous. The money raised by our team helps our neighbors in New Hyde Park and Garden City Park who need assistance with rent, utility bills and other expenses.
You can go online to Runsignup.com, search SVDPLI, and join the Holy Spirit team. To receive a T-shirt, you must register before September 14.
For more information, please email us at [email protected].
